The University of Virginia is distinctive among institutions of higher education. Founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, the University sustains the ideal of developing, through education, leaders who are well-prepared to help shape the future of the nation.

U.Va. is a public university, nourished by the strong support of its alumni. Since U.S. News and World Report began ranking public universities as a separate category, U.Va. has ranked either No. 1 or No. 2. In addition, U.Va. continues to rank in the Top 25 among the best of all national universities, both public and private.

The University of Virginia is selective and admission is competitive. The University expects both intellectual ability and academic achievement from its applicants. It also values personal qualities that allow students to enrich the life of the community. In 2012, 12% of applicants were admitted and enrolled at the University, with a mean combined SAT score of 1350. Of enrolling students, 91.5% ranked in the top tenth of their graduating high school class.

The University offers fifty-one bachelor’s degrees in forty-seven fields, eighty-one master’s degrees in sixty-five fields, six educational specialist degrees, two first-professional degrees (law and medicine), and fifty-seven doctoral degrees in fifty-five fields. More than 14,500 undergraduate students and 6,400 graduate students are enrolled at U.Va.

Students at the University of Virginia originate from forty-seven states and more than 120 countries; approximately 24% are American students of color, and 15% are international students. At 85.7%, U.Va. has one of the highest African American graduation rates among major public institutions in America.

Employers can create profiles and post opportunities for U.Va. students and recent alumni through the CAVLink system at any time, free of charge. Creating an account for job postings is easy and can significantly increase the visibility of your positions. CAVLink is the primary way that UCS informs current students and alumni about potential employment opportunities, including externships, internships, fellowships, part-time jobs and full-time positions. Once posted, positions will remain active in CAVLink until your desired expiration date.

externships

Externships are short-term job-shadowing experiences that allow students to explore a variety of career fields and gain experience. Many employers utilize externships to build relationships with potential candidates by providing in-depth exposure to their company culture and organizational structure. Externships typically last for one or two weeks and take place during the winter break, spring break, and summer months.
