Duties include keeping up-to-date records of all members, receiving new and renewal membership payments, and publishing the UWS Membership Directory each year. The person serving in this position generally does so for one or two years. If you might be interested in learning more about serving the UWS by becoming the next Membership Chair, please contact Reida Fillmore at [email protected].

Welcome to the many new UWS members we have this year! Welcome Back to those who are returning! If you haven’t yet renewed your membership, please send in your renewal now. We will try to keep the membership info updated on a regular basis.

Signature member of the National Watercolor Society and the Utah Watercolor Society, Sherry Meidell loves to tell stories with paint. There is a story telling quality to painting. You take a sheet of high quality watercolor paper and watch magic happen. With a splash of paint and a lift of brush you turn it into a person, a place, or an experience. The viewer brings their own back ground and life to the painting as they view it. It can touch something deep within the painter and the viewer.

Epiphany on the Road to Zion – by Sherry Meidell

Sherry recently conducted a workshop for Uintah Mountain Artists at the Flaming Gorge Resort in September: “What an outstanding presenter! Did she ever make everyone laugh! It was fun to watch her paint as she shared her knowledge of portrait and landscape painting. Critiques of the artists’ paintings were very helpful. Illustrator, cartoonist, watercolor guru, and award-winning artist, she brought a spark of excitement, humor, a commitment to paint, and the opportunity to learn and grow in art!” Join the Utah Watercolor Society and the Intermountain Society of Artists for what promises to be a memorable night!

UWS Fall Show and Workshop Recap

4 UWS Paint Spot, November / December 2014

On Saturday, Sep 27th a dozen of us met at Storm Mountain, up Big Cottonwood Canyon. We had a wonderful time and lunch afterwards was delish!

What a fantastic spot we had for our October 11th Paint Out at Little Dell Reservoir! We had seven great artists show up to enjoy the moment. There is nothing like getting outside and energizing all your senses while you let the creative juices flow! We had big paintings, small paintings, sketches for future paintings, and we all enjoyed another great art moment!

great

The UWS had an exciting week, October 5th through October 11th, 2014 with our Fall Exhibition, Workshop, and Members Meeting demonstration with our nationally recognized artist, Barbara Nechis. Barbara guided 25 workshop attendees through her unique methods of painting spontaneously, encouraging us to draw upon our thoughts and memories, rather than our visual references. She continually stressed composition, using the principles and elements of design. Her workshop progressed through five approaches towards “Painting from the Heart,” the title of her first book on watercolor. Our five-day workshop included the following lessons: drawing with water, negative painting, section painting, a wet-into-wet “doodle” method, and finally adding opaque gouache to the wet-into-wet approach. Barbara also inspired a crowd of about 125 attendees with a painting demonstration to the UWS membership on Tuesday, October 7th.

You may have noted that the Leonardo has booked a return engagement of the blockbuster exhibit of Body Worlds. Body Worlds is made up of real human bodies, displayed by using a specimen preservation process called Plastination. This process was invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens to halt decomposition and preserve anatomical specimens for scientific and medical education. Artists benefit as well by getting an inside look at human anatomy. Each month, on the 3rd Thursday of the month

We are looking forward to Kristi Grussendorf’s UWS/CVC Fall workshop, “Getting the Most from Your Reference Photos,” Nov 6th – 8th, 2014 at the Hampton Inn in Logan. A special THANK YOU to our tireless workshop facilitator, Brenda Brunello, for planning and carrying out these wonderful workshops.

Logan City Library has invited UWS/CVC back for the Oct 10th Gallery Walk. Pictures will hang until Dec 10th, 2014 when we will put up a new show for the December Gallery Walk. This is a great opportunity to show our group’s work to the many people who pass through the library. The library reports that patrons are interested and are lingering in front of the paintings. Congratulations to Phil Harrison, our 2014-2015 Show Co-Chairman. His painting was sold to one of the librarians! Thank you to all the participants for the October Gallery Walk: Shirley Danahy, Beverly Byington, Jill Bliesner, Ovie Reynolds, Nancy Eastmond, Sherrill Gordon, Julie Hustad, Laura Hawley, and Kara Swensen.

The UWS/CVC plein air group is still meeting twice weekly with a change from Tuesday to Monday. Thursday remains our second day. We are still scheduled with the Logan Senior Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays when the weather is bad.

The entry dates for the UWS/CVC Fall show, “Origins and Destinations,” are Nov 10th and 11th, 2014. President’s Message Our UWS/CVC group is an active and energetic group of painters. I am grateful to our board and members for making our watercolor group so much fun and so inspiring. Thank you for sharing your talents, time and awesome paintings with everyone. I encourage you to bring paintings to be critiqued by Lester Lee at our regular meetings. A special thanks to him for occupying the “hot seat” and helping us improve! Our Tuesday, Nov 11, 2014 meeting will feature Michael Bingham, artist and art educator, discussing positive and negative shapes at 7:00pm in the Jim Bridger room of the Logan City Library. Critique is at 6:30 pm. We were delighted to participate in Dianne Adams’ Sep 19-20, 2014 workshop “Watercolor on Canvas.” In the photo below
