The Jargon

• hits: when a browser (the visitor) downloads a piece of data from the web page (the text, an image, a video file, etc.)

• pages: counts just the text, not images, video files, etc.• visits: the number of times a person has visited your website

for a time (session)• unique visitors: the number of different people that have

visited your website• bandwidth: how many bytes of data was transferred from the

server to the visitors • duration: how long people spent on your website• bounce rate: the percentage of visitors that did not go

beyond the first page• conversion rate: the ratio of visitors to buyers

Good Measures

• Want lots of unique visitors• Want lots of visits per visitor (that means they're returning

often)• Want lots of page views per visit (they're looking at more

than just one or two pages at a time)• Want a low bounce rate (people coming to your site

immediately finding what they're looking for)

Strategies For Increasing Visitors

• 3 Ways People Find You: o Direct / Email Links o Search Engineso Referring Sites

• Advertise Your Site• Search Engine Optimization Efforts • Blog newsy items that tie that into your store / website.  • Publish your blog feed where people will read it (e.g.

quilterblogs.com).  Blog promotion can be a discussion of its own!

 In summary: have something of value that lots of people want that they can only get  from your website

• Create "Landing Pages"• Test different types of landing pages• Ask for customer feedback• Show that there are people behind your business (photos of
