Outside the region, our impactis being noted as well. After anextensive revision to how theCarnegie Foundation classifiesAmerican colleges and universi-ties, the foundation placed USF inits highest classification level—Research University/Very HighResearch Activity. Of 4,321 col-leges and universities classified,only 95 achieved that status.

These achievements, and themany others you will read aboutin this issue, would not be possi-ble without the foresight and wis-dom of so many individuals, likeSam Gibbons, John Allen, TerrellSessums, Cecil Mackey and otherswho laid the foundation for thisremarkable institution.

silver medallion around her hus-band’s neck and announced, “Ideclare the University of SouthFlorida officially open.”

“The teachers were there, the labswere all equipped, the books werein the bookstore,” she says. “It justall fell into place.”

Now living across from the greatinstitution she and her husbandhelped build, Mrs. Allen feels agreat sense of pride. She stays con-nected with the university, takingpart in various functions andevents and receives weekly packetsof The Oracle from her friends atthe publication.

“I can’t help but be interested,”she says.

She is most proud of theUniversity Women’s Club she found-

ed in 1960 and the honorary doctor-ate she received in 1996.

“I think it [the Women’s Club] isone of the oldest organizations oncampus. We first met in 1960 andelected officers in 1961. Right fromthe beginning we set up as an organ-ization to help students. We workedto establish scholarships.” That mis-sion has never changed. In 2006, theclub awarded six scholarships.

Though her husband passed awayin 1982, Mrs. Allen still shares themajor accomplishments with him—like USF achieving top tier researchstatus from the Carnegie Foundation.

“It is such a great sense of pride,”she says. “I tell John, ‘we made it.’”

First Lady

When USF’s first president, JohnAllen, brought his wife, Grace,to see the 1,700-acre parcel ofland that would become USF,she saw weeds, scrub oak,swampland and ruts. But thatdidn’t stop Mrs. Allen frombelieving in her husband’s visionof a metropolitan university thatwould grow to more than 10,000students in just 10 years.

n “I was John’s right hand, sowhat he envisioned I wanted tohelp him achieve,” she recalls.

Today, 50 years later, Mrs. Allenrecounts the remarkable journey thatestablished USF and set the universi-ty on its path to becoming thelargest university of its kind in thesoutheast, and among the top 95research institutions in the nation.

“It was an unusual projectbecause it had never been donebefore,” Mrs. Allen says. In fact, USFwas the first public university inAmerica conceived, designed andbuilt in the 20th century.

John and Grace Allen came toTampa in 1957 from the Universityof Florida in Gainesville where Johnwas vice president. The next threeyears marked the university’s plan-ning phase.

“Every day was different,” Mrs.Allen recalls. “Each day was welloccupied.”

Staff was appointed. Booksarrived. Buildings were constructed.Faculty was recruited. And Johnand Grace Allen introduced thecommunity to the university. Therewere dinners and talks, receptionsand events.

By September 1960, the universitywas officially opened. It was aproud day. For some, the highlightwas the speech by Governor LeRoyCollins. For others, it was the raisingof the flags. But for Grace Allen, themoment when it all came togetherwas when Governor Collins hung a

Before the change, USF’s basicclassification was “Doctoral/ResearchUniversity - Extensive.” At the time,the classification was the highestlevel awarded by the foundation.USF has risen steadily through fivechanges and updates to the classifi-cation system which began in 1970as a tool for researchers looking fora clear way to differentiate institu-tions. Today, it is considered theleading classification system for allaccredited colleges and universities.And, according to the foundation’sweb site, it has been widely used inthe study of higher education, bothas a way to represent and controlfor institutional differences, andalso in the design of research stud-ies to ensure adequate representa-tion of sampled institutions, stu-dents or faculty.

Carnegie restructured its classifi-cations because “the higher educa-

tion landscape has becomeincreasingly complex and

multifaceted,” accordingto Lee S. Shulman,

president of theStanford, California-based foundation.The previousclassifications didnot reflect thatsay Carnegieofficials.

USF Ranked inTop Tier, Again

Even with extensive revisions tothe way it classifies U.S. col-leges and universities, theCarnegie Foundation for theAdvancement of Teaching againarrived at the same conclusion—USF is among the nation’s topresearch universities.

n The Carnegie Foundation’s mostrecent rankings classify USF as a“Research University (very highresearch activity).” The achievementis remarkable, particularly consider-ing the university’s young age. Only95 institutions in the country sharethe honor, and only two others inFlorida.

“This classification puts us in thesame company as the top researchuniversities in the nation,” says USFPresident Judy Genshaft. “Thisgrowth and achievement is evenmore impressive when we thinkthat we are in the same classifi-cation as the University ofFlorida and Florida SateUniversity—and USF ismore than 100 yearsyounger than thoseinstitutions.”

Carnegie’s cur-rent rankings classi-fy 4,321 institutions.Of the 95 universitiesat the highest levelof research, 62 arepublic universitiesand 33 are private.In the top tier USFjoins such exceptionalinstitutions as UCLA, Emoryand the University of NorthCarolina at Chapel Hill.

“This accomplishment is atestament to our outstand-ing faculty, students andstaff,” says Genshaft. “It isone more reason to cel-ebrate during our 50thanniversary year.”

Center for BiologicalDefense EarnsPrestigious GrantUSF’s Center for Biological Defense,as part of a consortium led byJohns Hopkins University, has beenawarded a Center of Excellencegrant by the Department ofHomeland Security (DHS). The cen-ter expects to receive $150,000 ayear over the next three years tostudy how the nation can best pre-vent, prepare for and respond tohigh-consequence disasters or ter-rorist attacks.

n The DHS Centers of Excellencebring together the nation’s leadingexperts and focus its most talentedresearchers on a variety of homelandsecurity threats. Thirty-five applica-tions were submitted for the competi-tive award, the sixth HomelandSecurity Center of Excellence to befunded by DHS. The center is formallytitled the Center for the Study of HighConsequence Event Preparedness andResponse.

Center director Jacqueline Cattani, aUSF professor of public health, saysthe award will help the university’sCenter for Biological Defense furtheradvance its research capabilities at thenational level and better prepareFlorida’s public health professionalsand first responders to respond tohomeland security threats.

Recognized for its biodefense andemerging disease research, educationand training activities, the center issupported by funding obtainedthrough the support of CongressmanC. W. “Bill” Young over the past fiveyears. Johns Hopkins approached thecenter in early 2005 to participate inresponding to the DHS request. Toenhance institutional diversity andincrease the multidisciplinary nature ofthe proposal, the center alerted JohnsHopkins to the Florida Consortium onHomeland Security, which also wasincluded in the proposal.

USF PresidentMakes History

USF President Judy Genshaftmade history in February,becoming the first woman to beawarded an honorary doctoratefrom Yeungnam University inSouth Korea. Wearing traditionalKorean dress, Genshaft was pre-sented with the honorary degreein literature during graduationceremonies at the distinguisheduniversity where she deliveredthe keynote address.

n Yeungnam University PresidentTong Ki Woo presented the hon-orary degree. He and Genshaft metin the early 1990s at the StateUniversity of New York at Albanywhere she was serving as provostand he was completing advancedstudies.

In her remarks Genshaft empha-sized Woo’s and her shared visionfor educating students as citizens ofa global village. She noted similari-ties between the schools, as theyare both investing in the future byencouraging research into engineer-ing, the bio-sciences and othergrowing fields.

Last year, USF and YeungnamUniversity signed an agreement thatled to the enrollment of 31Yeungnam undergraduate studentsin USF’s English Language Institute.The institute provides intensive

English study for international stu-dents preparing for college. Theagreement lays the groundwork forthose students to seek advanceddegrees at USF as well as for col-laboration on research projects.

“This relationship opens anotheravenue that helps us increase thediversity of our population withacademically strong, competent stu-dents from an institution withequally high standards,” says MaríaCrummett, dean for InternationalAffairs. “We hope it leads to furtherstudent and faculty exchangesbetween our two universities. Thisand other collaborations we’rebuilding continue to enhance USF’sexpanding global character.”

Three new deans and a campusexecutive officer for USFLakeland have recently beenannounced at USF.

n María Crummett has beennamed dean of International Affairs.She had been serving as interimdean since March 2005.

Previously, Crummett was direc-tor of the Center for InternationalBusiness in the College of BusinessAdministration. She also served asinterim director of Latin American

and Caribbean Studies and associ-ate director of the Center forInternational Business at USF.Crummett first joined USF in 1995as a research associate in theInternational Affairs Center.

Delcie Durham has beennamed associate provost and deanof the graduate school. Durhammost recently served as a programdirector for engineering designand materials processing and man-ufacturing at the National ScienceFoundation. In addition, she wasdean of the graduate college ofthe University of Vermont, over-seeing 72 master’s degree pro-grams and 19 doctoral programs.Durham is an accomplished aca-demic and researcher. She is wide-ly published and has presented atmany academic conferences.

Robert Forsythe has beennamed dean of the College ofBusiness Administration, effectiveJuly 1. He joins USF from the HenryB. Tippie College of Business at theUniversity of Iowa where he hasserved as the Leonard A. HadleyChair in Leadership since 2000 andsimultaneously as senior associatedean since 1998. Forsythe is a co-founder of the Iowa ElectronicMarkets where he developed a pro-gram for trading in futures contractson political and economic eventsover the Internet, and has attractednational attention for his work inforecasting elections using financialmarkets.

Marshall Goodman has beennamed campus executive officer forUSF Lakeland. He joins USFLakeland from San Jose StateUniversity where he has served asprovost and vice president for aca-demic affairs. He currently serves atthat university as special assistant tothe president and professor of polit-ical science. Goodman brings morethan 30 years of higher educationexperience to USF.

hen Derrie Perez,dean of USFLibraries, firstbrought MarkGreenberg, newly

appointed director of the FloridaStudies Center, to meet USF PresidentJudy Genshaft in 2002, she andGreenberg had more than abrief introduction in mind.Perez and Greenbergplanned to propose develop-ing a coffee table book tocelebrate the university’supcoming 50th anniversary.As it turned out, the presidenthad the same item on heragenda for discussion.

“There was tremendousexcitement at that meeting,”recalls Greenberg, who nowadditionally directs the univer-sity’s Special CollectionsDepartment and Oral HistoryProgram. “We were all on thesame wavelength.”

Four years, 10,000 staff

university’s public broadcasting serv-ice, WUSF. A special package editionincluding a one-hour retrospectiveDVD produced by WUSF (see storyPage 8) is also being made availableto commemorate the university’s 50thanniversary.

Greenberg wrote the 256-pagecoffee table book on two levels.On one level, photos and cap-tions tell the story of the first 50years; on another, more than60,000 words of text paint a his-tory of the university. “I tried totell as broad a story as possi-ble,” says Greenberg, whospent about one-and-a-halfyears writing the book. “I don’tbelieve I’ve told the entirestory; this book just scratchesthe surface.”

or Flamerica University. It tells thestory of locations as far south asMiami lobbying to become home tothe state university Congressman SamGibbons proposed for HillsboroughCounty. And it tells of a last minutecatch that saved the university fromnaming an Asian chicken (theBrahma) instead of a bull (theBrahman) as its official mascot.

Greenberg also tells a deeperstory—the story of a university thatdespite repeated budget crisesexploded with growth. Growth, hesays, that has been the result of“some really good leadership.”

Senior archivist and faculty mem-

ber Andrew Huse was leadresearcher for the book. Workingwith many graduate assistants over athree-year period, Huse and histeam read every edition of the stu-dent newspaper since its inceptionin 1960; developed a 1,500-pagechronology of the university;reviewed presidential papers, budg-ets and student handbooks; perusedcountless university publications andconducted 200 oral histories. Huseadditionally served as the book’sphoto archivist, responsible for thou-sands of images collected during thefour-year undertaking.

Marilyn Stephens, a designer inthe UniversityRelationsDepartment,designed the limitededition book. Thepublication wasfunded by theAlumni Association,the USF Foundation,Academic Affairs,

and a loan from the president’soffice. Sales from the current editionwill raise the necessary funds to payback the loan and pay for a secondprinting of the publication.

Greenberg learned a lot duringthe four-year process. “Bricks andmortar are just a manifestation ofpeople’s dreams, goals and desires,”he says. “Everything you see at USFis about the people who built thesecampuses.”

With the project now complete,Greenberg plans to turn his attentionback to his staff at the FloridaStudies Center and SpecialCollections. “While I was working

on this project theywere developing afirst-rate departmentand I owe it to themto turn my undivid-ed attention to theiroutstanding work.”

When Ernest Boger acceptedadmission to USF in 1963, USFbecame the first of Florida’s pub-lic universities to integrate at theundergraduate level. The story ofBoger’s transition from valedic-torian at traditionally black BlakeHigh School in Tampa to USF’sfirst African-American collegefreshman is one of many fea-tured by WUSF PublicBroadcasting in its historicallook at America’s first public uni-versity conceived, designed andbuilt in the 20th century.

n WUSF’s one-hour television spe-cial, Green & Gold: A Half Centuryof USF, is now available for purchaseon DVD. The special made itsbroadcast debut on WUSF in April.

It will berebroadcastthroughout theyear to coincidewith the universi-ty’s 50th anniver-sary celebration.

Professor’s Book EarnsNational Acclaim

USF St. Petersburg professorRaymond Arsenault may well beone of the most knowledgeablepeople in the country about thestruggle for racial equality thattransformed the civil rights move-ment in the early 1960s. The JohnHope Franklin professor of south-ern history and co-founder of theFlorida Studies Program at USFSt. Petersburg, Arsenault isreceiving national praise for hisbook, Freedom Riders: 1961 andthe Struggle for Racial Justice,published this year.

n The New York Times reviewed thenonfiction work with a full-pagearticle. The writer calls the book an“authoritative and compelling histo-ry.” The Washington Post says “Onemust read Arsenault’s superb ren-dering of that great saga. For thoseinterested in understanding 20th-century America, this is an essentialbook”.

Arsenault’slatest book,recentlyselected as aNew YorkTimes Editor’sChoice and aselection ofthe HistoryBook Club,

is a grippingaccount of the Freedom Riders, one ofthe most compelling chapters in thehistory of civil rights. Arsenaultrecounts how in 1961, emboldenedby federal rulings that declared segre-gated transit unconstitutional, a groupof volunteers—blacks and whites—traveled together from Washington,D.C., through the deep south, defyingJim Crow laws in buses and terminals,putting their bodies and their lives onthe line for racial justice. The bookpaints a harrowing account of the out-pouring of hatred and violence thatgreeted the Freedom Riders inAlabama and Mississippi.

This is Arsenault’s third book. Healso authored The Wild Ass of theOzarks: Jeff Davis and the SocialBases of Southern Politics (1984) andSt. Petersburg and the Florida Dream:1888-1950 (1998).

Arsenault has taught at USF St.Petersburg since 1980. A specialist inthe political, social and environmentalhistory of the American South, he hasalso taught at the University ofMinnesota, Brandeis University and atthe Universite d’Angers in France,where he was a Fulbright lecturer. Anactive member of the Florida affiliateof the American Civil Liberties Unionsince the early 1980s, he served twoterms as state president (1998-2000)and received the Nelson Poynter CivilLiberties Award in 2003.

Arsenault co-founded the FloridaStudies Program, an interdisciplinaryprogram with opportunities toexplore the regional history, culture,politics and ecology of Florida.

Nursing D.N.P. AmongFirst in the Nation

For nurse Afriyie Johnson, a mas-ter’s prepared family nurse practi-tioner and USF College of nursinginstructor, a new doctorate pro-gram in nursing means an oppor-tunity to take her nursing careerto the next level.

n Johnson is one of 15 students cur-rently enrolled in USF’s Doctorate ofNursing Program (D.N.P.), the first ofits kind in the state, and among thefirst in the country. The new degreegives nurses who want to practice,teach or manage at the profession’shighest level an alternative to the tradi-tional research-oriented Ph.D. degree.

Backed by the AmericanAssociation of Colleges of Nursing(AACN) and endorsed by theNational Academy of Sciences, thenew degree is one way to achieve ahighly skilled nursing workforcecapable of meeting practice demandsassociated with an increasingly com-plex health system. In addition, it willhelp increase the number of nurseeducators and administrators who arein even shorter supply than nurseswho provide direct patient care.

“Only 40 percent of nurses whoobtain a Ph.D. stay in academic set-tings to teach full time,” says MaryWebb, associate professor of nursingand the program’s director. “Ournursing practice doctorate will serveseveral needs, but one of the mostimportant will be to increase thenumber of doctorally-prepared facul-ty needed to teach nursing students.”

Webb says the degree will alsogive outstanding nurses who love tobe with patients and work in a clini-

cal setting the opportunity to obtain adoctoral degree.

For Johnson, who hopes to developWeb-based courses that could be usedby students in a new nursing programin her hometown of Ghana, WestAfrica, that’s an important benefit.

“I’m not interested in being a nurseresearcher in the more traditional hos-pital-based environment. However, Iam very interested in using researchin the primary care practice settingand teaching environments,” she says.

“I enjoy teaching and hands-on prac-tice, so the doctorate of nursing prac-tice program was an opportunity Icouldn’t refuse. It will help advancemy clinical skills while preparing meto develop nursing programs to meetlearners’ needs.”

USF was awarded a $1.28 millionSUCCEED Florida Career EducationGrant from the state’s Department ofEducation to support the first year ofthe D.N.P. program. The grant willcover tuition and help subsidize

salaries so students can take full-timecourse loads. Full-time students shouldbe able to complete the programwithin two years, according to Webb.

She adds, “The D.N.P. program willultimately benefit our communitiesbecause, with advanced knowledgeabout health systems and evidence-based practice, its graduates will bringa higher level of care to individualpatients, families and populations.”

Desmond Tutu Speaks at USF

More than 4,000 people filled theSun Dome January 19 to hearNobel Laureate ArchbishopDesmond Tutu speak. His lecture,“No Future WithoutForgiveness,” was part of theuniversity's week-long 50thanniversary kickoff celebration.

n “Forgiveness, it doesn’t meanpretending that things weren’t asthey were,” said Tutu. “Forgivenessdoes not believe that once a mur-derer, always a murderer. It givesthe other an opportunity of a newbeginning.”

South-African born Tutu is aworld-renowned activist for humanrights. He entered the priesthood ofthe Anglican church in 1960, pavingthe way for his lifelong commitment

to speaking out against apartheid. In 1984, Tutu was awarded the

Nobel Prize for Peace. Two yearslater he was elected Archbishop ofCape Town, a position which placedhim at the head of the AnglicanChurch in South Africa.

After the country’s first multi-racialelections in 1994, President NelsonMandela appointed Tutu to chair theTruth and ReconciliationCommission, investigating humanrights violations over the previous 34years. Tutu counseled forgivenessand cooperation, rather thanrevenge for past injustice.

Tutu’s lecture was sponsored bythe University Lecture Series in part-nership with the Reverend Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr.Commemorative CelebrationCommittee and the Peace ThroughDiversity Lecture Series.

Grant to Fund TeacherTraining in LatinAmerican andCaribbean StudiesA rare grant awarded to USF willtrain 40 teachers in the humani-ties of Latin America and theCaribbean—training that willimprove curriculum in the class-room.

n The National Endowment for theHumanities (NEH) grant was award-ed to USF’s Institute for the Study ofLatin America and the Caribbean(ISLAC) and its College of Education(COE) to fund the collaborativeeffort between USF, the SchoolDistrict of Hillsborough County, thePasco County School System andPinellas County Schools.

“It’s been obvious to a number ofteachers throughout the state and USFfaculty members that much informa-tion in the schools about the regionand its peoples is outdated or wrong,”says Timothy J. Smith, associate direc-tor for ISLAC. “That misinformationcan lead to continued stereotypes andsome forms of racism.”

For four weeks in June, 20 socialstudies and 20 Spanish language sec-ondary school teachers will partici-pate in a workshop at USF. Thirteenfaculty members will present lectureson topics related to Latin Americaand the Caribbean such as history ofthe region, the African Diaspora,local religions, literature, art andmusic. COE Faculty will demonstratehow to turn that content into kid-friendly lessons.

Based on what they learn, partici-pants will develop new curriculaand present a plan for its implemen-tation—plans they will share withtheir peers where they teach. USFfaculty members and graduateresearch students will keep in touchwith participants and conduct stud-ies to monitor outcomes and suc-cess. Smith hopes those studies willjustify additional grant monies.

On target for completion by Fall2006, USF Sarasota-Manatee’s newcampus location will include 24classrooms, a 190-seat lecture/exhi-bition hall, seminar and video-con-ferencing rooms, computer labs,student gathering places, facultyand staff offices, a technology andlearning center, dining facilities;training facilities for the School ofHotel and Restaurant Managementand even a daycare center.

For 31 years, USF Sarasota-Manatee has been co-located withNew College of Florida, sharing acampus near University Parkwayand North Tamiami Trail. USFSarasota-Manatee’s future campuslocation is just north of the univer-sity’s current co-located site. Theregional campus will continue toshare some of the current facilitieswith New College, such as thelibrary and conference center.

During its three decades of exis-tence, USF Sarasota-Manatee has

seen tremendous growth. Duringthe past five years alone, enroll-ment has risen over 50% to 3,500students annually. In addition, thenumber of academic programs hasincreased from 19 to 39.

Once completed, USF Sarasota-Manatee’s new campus location willoffer some 800 courses annually in39 academic programs—includingmore daytime classes, which werepreviously limited due to the sharedcampus arrangement with NewCollege. The new USF Sarasota-Manatee facility will have capacityto serve 5,000 students.

Additionally, the new facility willbe available for use by variousorganizations and for activities inthe community.

Malcom is one of 100 registeredartists of VSA arts of Florida (VSA),a state affiliate of the internationalnonprofit organization inWashington, D.C., that helps people

with disabilities learn through, par-ticipate in and enjoy the arts. Theorganization, housed at USF andadministered by the College ofEducation, offers its services to chil-dren and adults, artists, musicians,dancers and writers.

“VSA has opened me up to theworld,” says Malcom, who walkswith the aid of a cane. “I’m meetingmore people. I have a greater senseof optimism.”

The College of Education fundsVSA through a grant from theFlorida Department of Education.The college also supports VSA’s

programming by providing exhibi-tion space on campus and is work-ing toward furthering its involve-ment with the program.

“It’s a relationship that only hasthe potential to grow,” says MarianWinters, executive director of VSA.

In March, VSA participated in the2006 Children’s Festival Celebrating50 Years of USF. The College ofEducation and VSA have also joinedefforts for Celebration, an exhibi-tion being held in honor of the uni-versity’s 50th anniversary. Special

education teachers who graduatedfrom USF were invited to submitartwork from their students for theshow. The artwork will be on dis-play in May and afterward aroundthe College of Education.

USF’s Special EducationDepartment is especially interest-ed in developing stronger tieswith VSA.

“We foster the use of arts ininstruction and we’re looking tobuild a bridge through VSA,” saysDaphne Thomas, chair of SpecialEducation. “Through our partner-ship we can work with teachers in

art, special education and all othertypes of educators to help themunderstand how to work with chil-dren with special needs.”

VSA’s programming includesartist residencies, teacher training,educational workshops and exhibi-tions throughout Florida. Theseservices allow professional artistsand teachers opportunities to edu-cate and connect with the disabledcommunity. VSA also challengesthe physical and financial limita-tions that prohibit people with dis-abilities from promoting andexhibiting their work and engagingwith the community.

An artist registry publicizes thework, biographies and contactinformation of the state’s emergingand established artists with disabili-ties. The free directory is located onthe organization’s Web site atwww.vsafl.org.

Installations provide another toolfor artists with disabilities to sharetheir work, restore a sense of hopeand begin a new career. A pendingChallenge Grant from the state'sDivision of Cultural Affairs will helpfund the Open Door Gallery, aspace designed for people with dis-abilities that opened in October2005 at VSA’s Fletcher Avenueoffice. audience. Conversely, visitors seefirsthand the creative abilities thatimpediments may belie.

In November, 10 registered mem-bers of VSA participated in the“Creativity Works!” career forum atthe Cummer Museum of Art &Gardens in Jacksonville. LoraDuguay was there to see visitorsenjoy her sensual paintings ofgypsy women and wildlife.

The former medical transcription-ist contracted polio at the age ofthree. Years later she developedpost-polio syndrome. No longerable to work in her field, Duguayfound that art and VSA helped herto build a new life.

“I reinvented myself from a med-ical transcriptionist to an artist,”

says Duguay. “Art helped bring methrough the tough period. VSA doesgive you hope. People are lookingat your work, and it makes you feelgood. It gives me a reason not togive up.”

Betty Jo Blauner has alsoachieved success with her art sincecontacting VSA in 2004. Diagnosedwith Parkinson's disease, she turnedto poetry and painting to help man-age the illness that damaged herbody. It wasn't until she joined theorganization, however, that she wasable to turn a coping mechanisminto a career.

In the span of a year Blauner hasexhibited her work throughout thestate, sold several pieces and inMarch had 21 of her paintings dis-

played at the Marcia P. HoffmanPerforming Arts Institute at RuthEckerd Hall in Clearwater.

“People never fully realize thepower of art until they hear ourartists’ stories,” says Winters. “Theirwork frees them to become part ofsociety.”

Smart Scarecrow

The Erebus Scarecrow—designed by USF computer sci-ence students to protect boththe investment of aqua-farmersand the lives of birds that mayprey upon their fish—does nothave a “head all full of stuffing,”like the scarecrow of Oz fame.Erebus has a head all full ofsophisticated but relatively inex-pensive sensors, cameras andother hi-tech computer compo-nents that can keep birds awayfrom fish farm ponds withoutharming the fish-eating birds.

n The smart scarecrow, capable ofstanding guard 24/7 disguised in aUSF football uniform, uses image pro-cessing to detect fish-eating birds thatcome in range of a fish pond andthen blasts them with the amplifiedsound of a gunshot and douses themwith potent but harmless jets ofwater. Smart, but not one to keepsecrets, Erebus e-mails or calls theuser’s cell phone to let them knowthat he has been on the job andaccomplished a hi-tech “scare.”

Erebus was born in the College ofEngineering as just one of this semes-ter’s projects in computer science pro-fessor Ken Christensen’s SeniorProjects class. Every semester, theclass tackles five to six creative prob-lems, many contributed by local com-panies. This year, undergrads AlbertNg, Jimal Ramsmooj, FranciscoBlanquicet and Scott Werner set outto create the unique surveillance sys-tem. Armed with an “eBox” donatedby Microsoft and sprinkler equipmentdonated by Contech, they tested thescarecrow’s capabilities first in the laband then in the field. Convinced ofthe scarecrow’s real-world potential,he was entered in the MicrosoftWindows Challenge.

The competition challenges under-graduate teams of four, along with afaculty mentor to design a computer-based system that solves a real-world

problem. Organized by Microsoft inassociation with the Institute ofElectrical and Electronics EngineersComputer’s Society InternationalDesign Competition (IEEE’s CSIDC),the contest gives all registeredWindows Challenge teams an oppor-tunity to come to Redmond,Washington to present their projectsfor a chance to win cash prizes.

Whether fish are raised for humanconsumption or for tropical fishfanciers, fish farming is increasinglybecoming a big industry, and farmerswant to protect their stock.

“Aquaculture is a vital part of theworld’s fish production and a $40 mil-lion business in Florida,” saysChristensen. “The outdoor farms aresusceptible to predator birds. The stu-dents’ intelligent scarecrow isdesigned to benefit farmers while pro-tecting predator birds, many of which

are protected species, from harm.”The head stuffing employed is cut-

ting edge processing technology run-ning on WindowsCE.

“The Erebus Scarecrow is not justanother motion-detector,” says studentAlbert Ng. “It is capable of intelligentdetection and deterrence and it canalso record the events so farmers canget an idea of which ponds are themost popular with birds.”

According to Ramsamooj, Erebuswill detect motion and then use itscameras, and simple image process-ing software running in an eBox“micro PC,” to discriminate betweenintruders and non-intruders using pro-grammed color recognition.

“This is a great way for Microsoftto see what people can do with theirWindows CE software,” saysRamsamooj.

Testing, Testing, One,Two, Three

Hoping to save manatees frombeing injured or killed by boats,researchers in USF’s College ofMarine Science, along with stu-dents and colleagues at NewCollege, the University of Floridaand Mote Marine Laboratory,recently tested manatee hearing.Their study was published latelast year in the Journal ofComparative Physiology.

n “Florida manatees, an endan-gered species, are often injured orkilled by boat strikes,” explainsDavid Mann, a professor in theCollege of Marine Science. “Theability of manatees to hear andlocalize boat sounds is importantfor their survival. We wanted to findout how well manatees can hearand process sounds in an aquaticenvironment that conducts soundfive times faster than sounds areconducted through the air.”

Currently, about 3,500 manatees

are living in Florida waters. Everyyear, about 70 to 80 of the gentleaquatic mammals are killed byboats. Though researchers have lim-ited information about manateehearing, they surmise that how wellmanatees can hear and avoidapproaching boats is critical to theirsurvival.

Borrowing a technique used toscreen for deafness in newborns,the researchers measured the brainresponse to sound of resident man-atees at the Mote MarineLaboratory. Their research focusedon measuring how quickly themanatees’ auditory system couldrespond to changes in sound.

“We found that the manateeswere able to follow signals chang-ing at rates up to 1,400 cycles persecond (Hz), with peaks in theirresponse at 150 and 600 Hz. This isremarkably 10 times faster than thatof humans, but only half that ofdolphins,” says Mann. “This rapidtemporal processing could be anadaptation for localizing soundsunderwater.”

Researchers are currently studyingthe ability of these manatees tolocalize sounds under water bytraining them to swim to underwaterloudspeakers broadcasting sound.

“I know this is a prototype, but I cansee the potential,” said Skidmore, whosaid he loses fish to birds everyday.

Blanquicet also suggested that asystem like Erebus could be extendedbeyond fish farming to protectorchards and vineyards where farmersexperience similar problems withdeer, black bears and other neighbors.

“It’s great to do work in the lab,but very rewarding to see it inaction,” concluded Ng.

hen SherilynBrinker was nearly16 weeks pregnantwith identical twinsshe received dev-

astating news from the obstetrician.She had twin-to-twin transfusion syn-drome (TTTS). The syndrome, affect-ing 10 to 15 percent of identical-twinpregnancies, is the result of abnormalblood exchange between the identicaltwins through a common placenta.

The larger of the twins, or recipi-ent—was surrounded by too muchamniotic fluid and in danger ofheart failure as her body tried topump the overwhelming volume ofblood intended for both. The small-er, or donor twin, was encased in ashrinking amniotic sac deprived ofblood. Without treatment, bothwould likely die.

Brinker was referred to RubénQuintero, M.D., a pioneer in minimal-ly-invasive fetal surgery, particularly forthe treatment of pregnancies compli-cated by TTTS.

Today, the Brinkers’ twin daughters,Brooke and Brianna, are healthy,active 10 month olds—laughing, crawl-ing and pulling themselves up on theirtoy basket.

“Dr. Quintero and his team are thereason we have our sweet little girls.They are our miracle babies,” saysBrinker, who lives in Tampa with hus-band Jim and their blended family ofsix children. “I was amazed to find thatpeople come from all over the worldto be treated by Dr. Quintero.”

Quintero, who this year joined USFHealth as professor and director of theDivision of Maternal and Fetal

Medicine, was among the first to oper-ate on a human fetus with an endo-scope—a tube smaller than a pencilwith a video camera on the end tolook inside the womb. He devisedminiature tools that can be manipulat-ed through the endoscope, makingfetal surgery possible with a tiny inci-sion through the abdominal wall andinto the uterus.

The surgical treatment of TTTS wasrevolutionized in 1998 when Quinterodeveloped a selective endoscopic tech-nique that pinpoints which placentalblood vessels are the malfunctioningones and seals off only those with alaser. He also developed a widely-adopted system for categorizing theseverity of the syndrome.

The minimally-invasive techniquehas helped reverse the odds of survivalin twins affected by TTTS. “This haschanged from a disease resulting in 95percent likelihood of losing the preg-nancy if nothing was done to a 90 per-cent chance of at least one twin surviv-ing and a 50-to 60-percent chance thetwo will survive,” Quintero says.

The field of fetal therapy is a smallbut growing specialty that finds waysto treat and cure fetuses that wouldotherwise be lost to birth defects orborn with severe disabilities.Approximately three percent of allpregnancies are affected by birthdefects—the leading cause of death inthe first year of life.

The number of fetal conditions thatcan be effectively treated during preg-nancy has increased with improve-ments in prenatal diagnosis and theshift to ultrasound-guided, minimally-invasive procedures. Such advanceshave expanded and sharpened the sur-geon’s field of view within the womb,helping make prenatal surgery moreeffective and less risky for both motherand fetus, Quintero says.

While the limitations have beenreduced, fetal surgery remains amongthe most challenging. Even with themagnification of ultrasound andendoscopy, operating on a fetusimmersed in a sac filled with amnioticfluid is similar to working under water,Quintero says. “These are very tiny tar-gets. For example, the baby’s heart isthe size of an olive, and within that

olive you have to find and manipulatea vessel the size of a hairpin.”

Adding to the complexity, thehuman uterus—unlike the uterus ofother species—is not very tolerant ofdisruption. The surgeon cannot predictor prevent spontaneous contractions ofthe uterus following a diagnostic orsurgical procedure, Quintero says.

At USF, Quintero continues hisinvestigation of a technique, which hecoined “amniopatch,” to repair the rup-

ture of uterine membranes in patientswho experience the rare complicationfollowing amniocentesis. Stem celltherapy is another area of interest forQuintero.

“The potential is immense. If wecould deliver cells to the fetus tochange the natural progression of agenetic disease, we may be able to alterthe anticipated poor outcome at birth.”

“Dr. Quintero is a brilliant clinician,but there are many brilliant clinicians,”

says nurse Patty Bornick, the researchcoordinator on Quintero’s fetal therapyteam. “What makes him so special is hisunwavering ability to think outside thebox and his passion for finding ways tosolve problems and offer realistic hopeto his patients.”

osé Zayas-Castro, pro-fessor and chair of theDepartment ofIndustrial andManagement Systems in

the College of Engineering, alongwith four other professors,received the engineering profes-sion’s highest honors for 2006. Ata February awards ceremony inWashington, D.C., Zayas-Castroand his colleagues from four other

universities received the 2006Bernard M. Gordon Prize. Alongwith the prestigious recogni-tion comes a $500,000award.

The Bernard M.Gordon Prize wasestablished in2001 to recog-nize engineeringand technologyeducators whostrive to strength-en the engineer-ing work-forcethrough programs

which cultivate student leadership,communication skills, creativityand teambuilding. Zayas-Castroand his colleagues received theaward for the creation and suc-cessful implementation of “TheLearning Factory.”

An undergraduate program, TheLearning Factory was originallydesigned to provide real-worldtraining to multidisciplinary engi-neering students in order to pro-

duce engineers who could easilyturn theory into practice and man-

age engineering projects inde-pendently. Teams of stu-

dents work togetherto define a prob-

lem, build a pro-totype, create abusiness pro-posal and final-ly present theseideas and solu-tions to a com-

pany.Zayas-Castro

describes the pro-

gram as, “a hands-on environmentfor students to practice, do, exper-iment and re-do.” Studentsinvolved in The Learning Factoryhave worked on projects such asturning coal ash into a pavementor designing a collapsible crutch.

The Learning Factory was ini-tially implemented in three univer-sities, Pennsylvania StateUniversity (PSU), the University ofPuerto Rico-Mayaguez (UPRM) andthe University of Washington in1997. Successful implementation ofthe program into each school’scurriculum took about three yearsaccording to Zayas-Castro.

The past eight years haveshown program expansion intoother departments in the original

institutions as well as other univer-sities in the United States andLatin America.

Zayas-Castro became involvedwith the initiative in 1993 whenthe principal investigators fromPSU contacted the department atUPRM where he was working andhe became the principal investiga-tor for the program at that institu-tion. A grant from the NationalScience Foundation/AdvancedResearch Projects Agency original-ly funded the initiative.

Zayas-Castro says he renovatedhis teaching style by better blend-ing theory, practice and lab expe-rience in the curriculum.

“I became more emphatic inthat students learn better by

doing,” says Zayas-Castro.While the program is not fully

implemented at USF, Zayas-Castrohas redesigned the Capstone proj-ect to include elements of TheLearning Factory.

“It provides students an environ-ment to go from conception todesign to manufacturing to businessjustification. It is as close as it gets tohaving a factory environment in theuniversity,” he concludes.

Zayas-Castro received his bache-lor of science degree in industrialengineering from UPRM. Heearned a master of science degreein industrial and managementengineering, as well as a master ofbusiness administration degree anda doctorate in management from

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.Zayas-Castro has also been

awarded the Fellow Award fromthe Institute of Industrial Engineers(IIE) and he was namedDistinguished Industrial Engineerof the Year (1985-86) by IIE.

The other recipients of theaward in 2006 include Jens E.Jorgensen, John S. Lamancusa,Lueny Morell and Allen L. Soyster.The award money will be fun-neled back to the original threeuniversities for continued promo-tion and growth of the program.

Nearly Half of ERPhysician CareUncompensated

As more and more uninsuredpatients visit hospital emer-gency rooms, more and moreemergency physician groups areproviding disproportionatelyhigher rates of uncompensatedcare. And that could lead totragic results—worse over-crowding, adversely affectedquality of care and emergencyrooms closing their doors—according to a recent USF study.

n USF researchers surveyed 188Florida hospital emergency physi-cian groups about the uncompensat-ed care they provided in 1998. The83 physician groups responding pro-vided substantial uncompensated, orfree, emergency care, ranging from26 to 79 percent, with an average of

nearly 47 percent. Uncompensated services are serv-

ices for which no payment isreceived from either the patient orfrom a public or private insurer.Those services include charity carefor patients who cannot afford topay, bad debt from patients whochoose not to pay their portion ofthe bill and denial of payment foremergency services by health plans.

“This study is one of the first toquantify the uncompensated careprovided by Florida emergencyphysicians,” says lead study authorBarbara Langland Orban, associateprofessor and chair of Health Policyand Management at the USF Collegeof Public Health. “Emergency physi-cians say the large amount ofuncompensated care they providehas become a substantial cost ofpracticing emergency medicine, butwe did not expect such a high per-centage of free care.”

The study also found that emer-gency physician groups providingthe highest levels of free care tendedto practice in urban hospitals servinglarge populations of Medicaid anduninsured patients. USF worked withthe Florida College of EmergencyPhysicians (FCEP) on the study,which was published in theOctober—December 2005 issue ofHealth Care Management Review.

FCEP President Jorge Lopez saysuncompensated care affects allpatients, not just the uninsured. “Thesame standard of care is provided toeveryone who comes through theemergency department. If that caredeteriorates from lack of adequatefunding and resources, it deterioratesfor everyone.”

visitors to easily access the humanand natural history of Florida estu-aries. Additionally, visitors canexplore estuary resources by select-ing a region on a Florida map or bysearching subject areas, such as seagrass, marine mammals or reefs.An education link offers lessonplans for teachers and informationfor students in kindergarten throughtwelfth grade.

the sea. They are home to a myriadof plants, animals and shellfishincluding manatees, mangroves, seagrasses, shrimps, scallops andsalmon. These species thrive in amixture of fresh and salty waters.

USF researcher Shawn Landry,interim director of the center whichis part of the School of Architectureand Community Design, says theonline atlas focuses on water quali-ty and hydrologic and ecologicaldata as well as recreational informa-tion. “The atlas is designed to be a‘one-stop information shop’ for any-one who would like information onFlorida’s estuaries and perhaps playa role in maintaining and improvingour vital water resources.”

Researchers at USFteamed with the U.S.Geological Survey, theTamp Bay Estuary Programand the Florida Fish andWildlife Research Institute to cre-ate the Estuary Atlas. Together theycompiled data from nearly 30 waterresources information partners.

Atlas Provides In-depth Informationon Florida’s EstuariesThanks to USF’s Florida Centerfor Community Design andResearch, citizens, scientists andplanners concerned with thehealth of Florida’s estuaries nowhave a new resource at their dis-posal. The Tampa Bay EstuaryAtlas, an edition of the alreadyonline Florida Water Atlas, offerscomprehensive information onthe state and health of Florida’sestuaries.

n Estuaries, often listed among ournation’s greatest natural resources,are dynamic systems where freshwater from rivers and streams meet

an emergency. The number of unin-sured patients in Florida and nation-wide is growing even as discountsnegotiated by private insuranceplans and government programssuch as Medicaid and Medicare con-tinue to squeeze reimbursement forhealth services.

Thus, the researchers suggest, anemergency physician group’s abilityto shift costs from uninsured toinsured patients to offset decliningrevenue is increasingly limited. And,unlike hospitals, emergency physi-cian groups do not offer other non-emergency services that could helpsubsidize unfunded emergency care.

Emergency care for uninsuredpatients is an extremely importantsafety net in the health care system,the study authors conclude.“Intervention by policy makers isindicated to reduce and deteruncompensated care to avoid thenegative effects of emergency depart-ment crowding on hospitals, physi-cians and patients and the closure ofadditional emergency departments.”

am Gibbons sat in arestaurant in Tampaback in 1956 and onthe back of a nap-kin—where it seems

all great ideas are recorded—sketched out the idea for a newstate university in Florida. Hisplans were modest. He thought thenew university would offer the citi-zens of Tampa the chance to studybeyond high school, earn a collegedegree and improve both qualityof life and earning potential.

Initially, the university would offeran associate’s degree, and later, asthe university grew, it wouldexpand the number of programsand degrees, build dormitories,develop an athletic program. OnJune 18, 1955, the State of Floridaofficially created a university. TheFowler Avenue property wasapproved as the site for theUniversity of South Florida, andthe Tampa Tribune called it “a joy-ous day for everyone.”

President Judy Genshaft wel-comed former Representative SamGibbons back to USF on January

17, 2006, along with former presi-dents Cecil Mackey, Francis T.Borkowski, Betty Castor and GraceAllen, widow of John Allen, thefirst president of USF.

Making reference to that “joyousday in 1956,” President Genshaftkicked off celebrations for the 50thAnniversary of USF with anannouncement about the economicimpact of the university on theTampa Bay area. “The people ofTampa made a savvy investment50 years ago,” said Genshaft refer-ring to the $50,000 privately raisedgrant that was used to plan the

university. “Today, USF has a $3.2billion economic impact on theregion.”

Since it was founded in 1956,USF has accrued an impressivebalance sheet of accomplishments.Within 50 years of its founding, ithas earned national distinction asone of the major research universi-ties in the country and a Big Eastsports contender.

Despite its growing nationalstature, USF continues to be solidlyconnected to its home community.More than 90,000 alumni live inthe Tampa Bay region and the uni-

versity is the fourth largestemployer in Tampa Bay. The cur-rent mayor of Tampa, Pam Iorio, isa graduate of USF—a point ofpride for the institution as well asthe individual. “The relationshipbetween Tampa Bay and USF isfull of synergy,” says Mayor Iorio.“We shine the light on each other’sachievements. Both enterprises areinvested in the success of theother. I think Tampa Bay and USFhave a uniquely cooperative town-gown relationship.” Speaking atthe celebration in January, MayorIorio talked about her memories of

growing up in Tampa and playingon the campus of USF where herfather taught English. “The campuswas filled with sandhills, and therewere not many buildings.Everyone was excited about hav-ing a college nearby, but I don’tthink anyone imagined that itwould become such a great placeso fast.”

USF exerts a positive influenceon the region through the creationof jobs—the university is thefourth largest employer in theregion. “And employment has anenormous effect on the local com-

munity,” says Genshaft. “It’s morelike a flood than a trickle-downeffect. Every employee at the uni-versity participates in the localeconomy by renting and purchas-ing real estate, cars, personal andbusiness services. A portion ofevery dollar spent in the TampaBay region can be traced back toUSF,” she says.

Construction on the Tampa cam-pus as well as on the regional cam-puses is helping to increase localeconomic dividends as the universi-

ty keeps up with demands for stu-dent housing, new classrooms andresearch facilities. “The buildingboom is in response to demand,”says Richard A. “Dick” Beard, III,chairman of the USF Board ofTrustees. “We are not putting upbuildings with the hope that theywill come. They are coming—stu-dents, researchers, faculty, and weare building to accommodatethem.” Beard also noted that theeconomic activity extends through-out the USF system. Plans or con-struction are under way for a resi-dence hall in St. Petersburg, for anew campus in Lakeland, andextensive renovations and newconstruction on the campus atSarasota-Manatee.

Executive Vice President andChief Financial Officer Carl Carluccialso reported that the university

refinanced its housing portfolio in2005 for $135 million. The universi-ty currently has 4,500 beds with anadditional 350 under construction.In 2005, construction spendingtopped $206 million, providing eco-nomic activity in all aspects of thelocal construction industry. The uni-versity has a program that encour-ages local, small, and women andminority-owned businesses to bidon projects that include the pur-chase of everything from audio-visual equipment to office supplies,

furniture, transportation services,tools and hardware.

USF also has a strong reputationfor providing access to the artsthrough theater and music as wellas hosting some of the leadingintellectuals, writers, scientists, andartists in the world. “It is the mis-sion of the university to expand

horizons,” says Genshaft. “We wantto help people stretch their imagi-nations and their sense of intellec-tual power.”

Intellectual power is at the coreof several USF—Tampa Bay proj-ects and collaborations. The USFResearch Park is a perfect exampleof the way that the university canapply its resources to help thelocal community—and its economy—thrive. The Research Park pro-vides an environment where peo-ple can develop powerful ideasinto marketplace commodities.

Local businesses are leveragingthe presence and the participationof a world-class research universityin its own backyard. USF providesbusiness development assistance aswell as access to state-of-the-artresearch equipment. “The universi-ty was founded on practical princi-ples, by practical people. We con-tinue in the tradition of applyingintellectual energy to solve realworld problems,” says Genshaft.

Calculating Impact

niversity Impact studies attempt to summarize themeasurable effects of colleges and universities onlocal and state economies. Impact studies are a

tool to calculate the economic value of public investmentin higher education.

Impact studies use the concept of value added.Calculations of value added describe the result of thedirect spending of the university and its students, facultyand staff.

USF used IMPLAN (Impact Analysis for PLANning) todevelop its economic study. IMPLAN is a software pro-gram developed and released by the Minnesota IMPLANGroup, formed by the University of Minnesota, that gener-ates social accounts and input/output multipliers based ondata supplied by USF. The total industry purchases ofcommodities, services, employment compensation, valueadded and imported are equal to the value of the com-modities produced.

manda Corsentino wasfeeling good about thedirection her life wastaking. She was a sec-ond year undergradu-

ate student majoring in political sci-ence at USF. And, she thought shehad a good perspective on the worldaround her. That was before sheboarded the bus—and took a ridethat would change her life.

Corsentino was one of a handfulof students who signed up for aservice learning opportunity in EastTampa. Rather than complete a tradi-tional research paper, Corsentinowould spend 15 hours working as acommunity volunteer and formallyreport back on the revitalization pro-gram under way there.

Before she got started, Corsentinotook a mandatory, up-close bus tourof East Tampa led by Evangeline“Vann” Best, a retired social workerand neighborhood leader born, bred,schooled and still living about 12blocks from the designated EastTampa Community RevitalizationArea (CRA).

“It was an extreme eye opener,”recalls Corsentino, now workingtoward her graduate degree in publicadministration. “It really drew me in;

I felt almost embarrassed that I didn’tknow about urban communities.”Today, though not living in EastTampa, Corsentino is very much apart of the community. And verymuch a part of helping to make it abetter place.

Drawing in students likeCorsentino was the idea behindUSF’s East Tampa Initiative, says Judi Jetson, director of the USFCollaborative for Children, Families& Communities. Drawing in studentsand making a meaningful difference.

A Willing PartnerShortly after she was elected in

2003, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio calledon her alma mater, USF, to becomea partner in the city’s East TampaInitiative, a broad-based, compre-hensive revitalization and redevelop-ment program. Working with selectcommunity partners, Iorio was deter-mined to help turn one of the city’smost challenged neighborhoods intoa community of vibrant residential,business, recreational, social and cul-tural life. Bound by HillsboroughAvenue to the north, I-4 to thesouth, the city limits of Tampa to theeast and I-275 to the west, theneighborhood was suffering from

years of decline, neglect and lack ofinvestment.

USF President Judy Genshaftsigned on, pledging to mobilize theuniversity’s diverse resources in acoordinated effort.

“Being engaged in the communityis our duty as a major metropolitanresearch university, and it is aresponsibility we take very serious-ly,” Genshaft says. “At USF we havethe resources and expertise that candrive progress and change lives.”

Genshaft met with her chief aca-demic advisor, Provost Renu Khator,to move the commitment forward.Khator challenged Jetson, an experi-enced and successful builder of rela-tionships between researchers andcommunity leaders, to come up with

a project that would deliver tangibleresults to the neighborhood. That ledto a meeting with representativesfrom 10 USF colleges; faculty mem-bers; administrators; graduate stu-dents; and Ed Johnson, the mayor’spoint person for the initiative.

“We listened to the facts. We noo-dled on it; we offered opinions andcame up with ideas,” says Jetson.“Then, we got in a smaller group totalk it over. We involved the commu-nity. We listened to everything theyhad to say.”

And, the group came up with anidea.

A Project Takes ShapeThe group’s idea, embraced by

tives, was asset mapping, an endeav-or to formally collect data and mapthe assets of the neighborhood. Theeffort would serve to identify whatwas right with the community,instead of what was wrong. BeverlyWard, a senior research associate inthe Department of Anthropology,spearheaded the effort.

“All you ever hear in theseunderserved communities is thenegative,” says Johnson. “We agreedit was important to map the assets,and that would help to lure otherpeople in.”

The project marked the begin-ning of a relationship that SamKinsey, a 41-year resident of EastTampa and chairman of the EastTampa Community Revitalization

Partnership, calls “unlimited.” Headds, “There is endless potentialhere for the community and theuniversity.”

The Commitment GrowsBy spring 2004, USF was taking its

involvement to the next level. Inaddition to Ward’s Asset MappingTraining, four service learning classesgot under way in East Tampa, allfunded by seed grants from theCollaborative. Students in the Collegeof Nursing researched the communi-ty’s health assets. Architecture stu-dents, led by associate professorTrent Green, developed a commer-cial vision for a one-mile stretch ofthe badly deteriorated 22nd Streetcorridor, once the heart of the neigh-borhood. Students and professorHarold Keller from the College ofEducation and assistant professorRichard Briscoe from the FloridaMental Health Institute exploredhow best to build a rich culturalpartnership with the community.And students in assistant professorKay Perrin’s Adolescent Health classin the College of Public Health gotto work identifying neighborhoodassets.

In return, the community provideda rich learning environment.

“I believe we have as much tolearn from the community as theyhave to gain from what we canoffer,” says Jetson, who already wasbeginning to see the initiative cata-pult the university to a new level ofcommunity engagement.

Six additional East Tampa service

learning opportunities were offeredthe following spring. Among theclasses were music lessons for thecommunity directed by the College ofVisual & Performing Arts, asthmaeducation and diabetes educationdirected by the College of Nursing.And USF’s School of Social Workbegan mapping the community’ssocial capital.

By summer 2005, USF’s Center forUrban Transportation Research pro-duced the final product of the origi-nal project idea—asset maps for EastTampa.

The maps revealed a communityrich with assets. Ten registered neigh-borhoods, 16 schools, 4,732 home-steads and six health care facilities.More than 150 licensed childcareproviders and 110 places of worshipwithin a half-mile radius. The mapsdetail the city’s public transit system,and identify every registered businessin the area and each of the city’ssocial organizations, including cultur-al and artistic organizations, mutualsupport organizations, politicalgroups, recreational organizationsand volunteer and civic organizations.

“The university helped us tremen-dously,” says Johnson. “The data basethey have created is phenomenal.”

A Meaningful Impact“Service learning isn’t the easy

choice. It’s about making a differ-ence in the community—not juststaying in the world of ideas,” saysJetson. “It only works if you make acontribution.”

Not just any contribution. Best,

who serves as liaison between USFand the East Tampa community, saysthe contribution cannot be one-sided.It must meet the needs of the com-munity.

“Until I feel we have East Tampa’sbest interest at heart, I’m not going toagree to any service learning project,”says Best. And once she agrees, sheinsists that every participant start theirservice learning by taking a tour ofthe community. As Best shares thehistory of East Tampa during thetours, she involves the students,allowing them to feel a part of EastTampa. With this shared knowledgeand the experience, the students areequipped with information to be suc-cessful in their community initiatives.

For Corsentino, the tour was araw, emotional experience. “It wasshocking. I almost felt like I was in adifferent world,” she recalls. “Butthen I heard Ms. Best in the back-ground talking about all the goodthings going on.”

By the time she had completedher first service learning class, work-ing with Chloe Coney, president andCEO of the Corporation to DevelopCommunities (CDC) of Tampa,Corsentino was hooked. She contin-ued her volunteer work throughoutthe summer, developing importantrelationships and a greater under-standing of the community. In thespring, under the direction of RobinJones, coordinator of USF’s Collegeof Arts and Sciences CommunityInitiative, Corsentino took part in theLegislative Internship Program, enter-ing into an internship with State

SF’s Stampede of Service ‘06,a massive project designedto help the East Tampa com-

munity, was the largest communityservice project in the history of theuniversity. Students gave their time-more than 5,400 hours-taking partin 23 different community serviceprojects.

They planted bushes and trees infront of community centers,throughout parks and neighbor-hoods. They removed trash fromresidential areas. They cleaned upcommunity parks, a basketball courtand retention pond. All while the

neighbors looked on—some askinghow they could help.

Ed Johnson, manager of the EastTampa Redevelopment Division, wasawed by the number of studentswho volunteered their time. “USFhad their first cleanup campaignhere in 2003. There were about 100

students,” he recalls. “This year, wehad 1,000 folks out there. It’s justamazing the growth that has hap-pened with volunteering.”

Students were glad for the chanceto give back to the community.

“This was a great way for us tocontinue USF’s initiative in EastTampa. It was a chance for our stu-dents to be one with the communi-ty,” says Amy Simon, Volunteer USFcoordinator. “And it's just the begin-ning. Our hope is to continue ourinvolvement in the community forthe long term.”

“The internship, along with myinternship at Ed Johnson’s office andthe honors thesis I wrote about civiclife in East Tampa, gave me an outletto connect the example of EastTampa to my broader learning experi-ence,” Corsentino says. “This, in turn,helped me to reflect on my valuesand decide what I wanted to con-tribute to society as a professionaland as a citizen.”

Today, pursuing her master’s degreein public administration at USF,Corsentino says her attachment to EastTampa is stronger than ever. “I reallylove the people here; they are likefamily to me. I feel like I am more of awhole person because I have becomea part of this community.”

Business began developing research partnerships in the communi-ty, one thing became clear—real world problems require multi-dis-ciplinary perspectives. And so, the USF Collaborative for Children,Families and Communities, a faculty-initiated and led program,was begun in 1996.

Over the past 20 years the Collaborative has awarded morethan $1.5 million in small grants for research projects and servicelearning classes—pairing USF faculty with community groups toenhance services, programs, relationships, and learning and bringknowledge into practice. The investments have yielded a five-foldreturn in additional grants and community-based research.

Today, the Collaborative focuses on six core activities: Facultygrants for research and service-learning, Research Day, an annualconference, distinguished speakers, new faculty orientation and anewsletter. Its steering committee, led by David Shern, dean of theFlorida Mental Health Institute, holds bi-monthly meetings onclosed-circuit television in order to exchange information on whatworks in communities served by all of USF’s regional campuses.

the initiative. “It’s a three-leggedstool,” she insists. Together the part-ners are making significant strides.

“This is a perfect example of thetangible, meaningful results that canbe realized when a communitybrings together its resources,” saysIorio. “Each of these entities isimpressive and together they are anamazing force that is helping tochange a community by improvingthe overall quality of life.”

“The relationship is evolving,”Kinsey says. “As each day passes wemeet, we plan and we come up withnew ideas. We look to whatresources are available to accomplishthose tasks and USF gets involved.”

USF’s Green and his architecturestudents are getting involved in amajor East Tampa revitalizationproject as a result of their servicelearning work. Green and his stu-dents have been contracted todevelop 100 retention ponds intocommunity lakes.

“Trent became trusted becausehe was there,” Jetson says, addingthat the contract award took morethan a year. “He listened. And herallied with his students to come upwith something important to thecommunity.”

For graduate architecture studentDaren Patterson, the project is anopportunity to gain real world expe-rience in his chosen field of study.“For me as a student this is extreme-ly helpful,” he says. “I am committedto seeing the project through to com-pletion.” Seeing the project throughmeans interacting with various citydepartments, such as Stormwater andParks and Recreation—interactionsthat further enhance the learning

experience while allowing Pattersonto make a meaningful contribution tothe community.

This spring USF offered four serv-ice learning classes in East Tampa.Like they do at the end of eachsemester, students and faculty pre-sented what they’ve learned to thecommunity at an annual researchday luncheon.

“What we are doing is incremen-tal, but it is a long lasting approachto getting involved in the communi-ty,” says Jetson. “Everyone is tired ofthe flash in the pan. This programhas legs.”

t’s happened in February for thelast 33 years. Kids in greaterTampa Bay start dreaming ofmousetrap cars, balsawoodbridges, robots and chemical

magic shows. Those “kids” are agessix to well over 60, but the age gapdoesn’t mean much because the lureof neat gadgets, amazing chemicaland laser demonstrations and cuttingedge technology on display at USF’sEngineering EXPO crosses not onlyage, but gender boundaries.

Sponsored by the College ofEngineering and held annually since1973, USF’s Engineering EXPO isheld in advance of NationalEngineering Week and, over its 33years, may have been instrumentalin a generation of attendees choos-ing engineering professions.

“I used to do a survey on incom-ing students and many said that theyhad attended Engineering EXPO andthat EXPO had encouraged them toseek careers in engineering,” saysDolores Gooding, who along withher fellow graduate studentsplanned and carried out the firstEXPO in 1973. She would be at thehelm of EXPO for the next 25 yearsas a professor in the College of

Engineering’s Department ofIndustrial and Systems Management.

With USF celebrating its 50thanniversary in 2006, and the Collegeof Engineering recently having cele-brated its 40th anniversary, a senseof tradition and USF history arenever far from the hearts and mindsof EXPO participants and organizerspast and present.

Gooding speaks fondly of theearly days of EXPO when pastDean of Engineering Ed Koppdrove the 1911 Baker Electric Carand gave rides to the young atten-dees. The attention paid to one ofthe past favorites, Cecil the Robot,named after then-USF PresidentCecil Mackey, never failed to makethe Tampa Tribune during EXPO,says Gooding.

Engineering EXPO, funded byindustry partners and USF’s studentgovernment, is a massive volunteerorganizational effort and much of theEXPO ‘git-r-done’ work ethic is nowand always has been student-driven.

“Student volunteers are a big partof EXPO’s success every year,” saysPaul McCright of the College ofEngineering’s Department ofIndustrial and Systems Management

and who has been the faculty advi-sor and organizational force behindEngineering EXPO since 1999. “Thisyear we had a 20-student planningstaff and over 300 volunteers,” saysMcCright.

As has been the case since 1973,industry is well represented atEXPO. Over the years such pastand present industry giants asRaytheon, Westinghouse, TampaElectric (TECO), Brunswick,Honeywell and Westinghouse par-ticipated. In 2006, the Museum ofScience and Industry (MOSI),TECO, Baxter, Mosaic, Honeywell,Raytheon, Electronic LearningProducts and HDR Engineering

were among the participants.Along with student involvement,

what really got EXPO rolling wasthe high level of industry participa-tion, says Gooding, who recalls“cold-calling” many companies notonly in the Tampa Bay area but asfar away as California to get themon the bandwagon. Today, many ofthe industry participants are formerstudents who return representingtheir own companies or theiremployers.

“Our alums working in industrycome back to campus and partici-pate in EXPO because they reallyenjoy getting involved,” addsMcCright. “It’s a chance for them to

see changes and a chance for stu-dents to network with them.”

While the attendance of schoolchildren has always been an intri-cate part of EXPO, the last twoyears have seen an increase in thenumber of elementary school chil-dren attending. Starting with EXPO2004, students from the Douglas L.Jamerson, Jr. Elementary School inSt. Petersburg started participatingalongside USF. The Jamerson pro-gram aims at closing what is per-ceived as a serious gap inAmerican education by encourag-ing students toward science andengineering career choices andEXPO helps gets the message

across to students that engineeringis not only fun, but a future.

“EXPO gets the kids on to cam-pus,” says McCright. “For them, auniversity campus begins to beknown and not scary, so they arelikely to go on to college with moreconfidence. I think we are helpingmany kids direct their career choic-es. That’s very rewarding for me.It’s an extension of the classroom.”

Many of the students from thecommunity are anything but shyat EXPO.

“One of our 5th grade classesshowcased Jamerson engineeringby helping participants build,design and test hoop gliders,”explains Jamerson principal RobertPoth. “Another 5th grade classhelped participants build pencil hel-icopters. A third class staffed ourexhibit booth, sharing informationabout our program with attendees.”

Why participate at such a highlevel?

“We challenge our students to

excel in all areas: math, reading,writing and the sciences,” says Poth.“Jamerson is one of only a handfulof elementary schools in the USAoffering the curriculum incorporat-ing math and engineering.”

And, participation means morekids interested in engineering. Oncemore, USF engineering student par-ticipation sends a message to thecommunity at-large.

“The wide variety of researchand educational venues at EXPOare indicators of both the depth andbreadth of engineering and theexciting challenges and opportuni-ties our students and faculty engagein,” says College of Engineeringdean Louis Martin Vega.

Following this year’s EXPO,McCright handed the responsibilityto Hendrick Jeanty, a professor inthe COE’s Department of ComputerScience and Engineering, who willtake over advising 2007 EXPO.Jeanty, who came to USF in 2004 isanxious to take over the reins.

“I’m not going to make anymajor changes with EXPO’s suc-cess,” says Jeanty, who is already atthe helm and working on the plan-ning for EXPO 2007. “I do want toengage more industry sponsors.”

Jeanty says he was eager to takeover because it gives him the senseof “giving back.”

“When I was an undergraduate atManhattan College I always enjoyedour version of Engineering EXPO,”recalls Jeanty. “It is really an impor-tant recruitment tool for USF and Iwant to continue that effort throughEXPO because not only might kidsget hooked on engineering and sci-ence, we hope they decide to cometo USF to start their careers.”

If the future is like the past,many students enjoying EngineeringEXPO will return as students, per-haps even as professors.

s a young boy, JordanZimmerman begandeveloping his businessacumen when he estab-lished a paper route in

his central New Jersey neighbor-hood. His route was so successful hehad to hire two kids to help out.Those humble beginnings provideda glimpse into what Zimmermanwould later achieve as one of themost creative minds in the advertis-ing and branding industry.

Today, Zimmerman, a 1980 USF

graduate, is founder and chairman ofthe Fort Lauderdale-basedZimmerman Advertising. Essentially,Zimmerman Advertising is a busi-ness solutions company posing asan ad agency, a strategy that hasserved the company well. A combi-nation of long-term brand buildingand short-term sales, whichZimmerman calls “brandtailing,” haswon the agency a who’s who list ofclients including Nissan, Target,Papa John’s Pizza, Office Depot andFris Vodka. An Omnicom subsidiarysince 1999, the 22-year-old firmbilled in excess of $1.5 billion lastyear, making it the 17th largest firmin the country and the largestagency in the southeast and bigger

than most agencies off MadisonAvenue. More than 900 employeesin 22 offices worldwide are drivenby Zimmerman’s philosophy.

Last fall, USF offered a semester-long advertising and mass communi-cations curriculum based onZimmerman’s approach to brandbuilding. Zimmerman reconnectedwith his alma mater to create theZimmerman Advertising Program(ZAP) after recognizing a need toupdate curriculum for students enter-ing an industry that changes almost

daily. “It’s about more than givingdollars,” Zimmerman says. “I wantedto influence the curriculum.”

Brandtailing was one of the firstZAP classes offered—a class whichZimmerman Advertising professionalstraveled from Fort Lauderdale weeklyto teach. In addition to supportingthe creation of the class with a signif-icant gift, Zimmerman personallyshared his achievements and insightswith students.

“President [Judy] Genshaft is agreat visionary and I’m pleased thatshe and the faculty are willing toallow me to make an impact here,”he says. “She exemplifies what apresident should be to our universi-ty. She understands the integrity of

our brand. She gets it and the facultygets it.”

It was at USF that Zimmermanfirst coined the phrase “brandtailing”to challenge his professors and theconventional methods of marketingand branding. He got his first realtaste for advertising when his cam-paigns class at USF won a nationalcampaign award that inspired the“Just Say No” drug prevention pro-gram in the early 80’s. Their hardwork earned the class the opportuni-ty to present their campaign at theWhite House. First Lady NancyReagan was so moved by their pres-entation that she adopted the cam-paign as one of her main causes dur-ing her husband’s term in office andlaunched the campaign nationwide.

After graduating from USF and aless-than-stellar start trying to breakinto the New York advertising world,Zimmerman returned to Tampa toreconsider his life’s ambition.Working by day at Hilton Advertisingand weekends at Chuck's Steakhouseand going to school at night, he rev-olutionized a branding model thatwould one day earn him the respectand praise of his industry. With$10,000 and unfettered determina-tion, Zimmerman started his owncompany and introduced the worldto brandtailing.

Explaining the theory that madehim famous, Zimmerman says, “Iwrote a business plan where I invert-ed the purchase funnel. In order toinvert the funnel I moved profitabili-ty from the bottom of the funnel tothe top and moved awareness to the

I put profitability on the topof the funnel above product aware-ness, because if a brand is profitable,it has awareness; if a brand is prof-itable, it has market share; and if abrand is profitable, it has revenueand margin. However, if I invert itback, it does not work the sameway…I could have awareness andhave no sales; I could have aware-ness and no relevancy; I could haveawareness and no share; and I couldhave awareness and have no margin.So, in this industry, why is brandawareness on top and why do weherald the agencies that build thisawareness level for their brand,when we should herald them for the

profitability of that brand and themarket share of the brand? That’swhat I did through brandtailing andit has worked for more than twodecades now. Brandtailing gives theconsumer a better reason to buythan price.”

Zimmerman is now sharing hissuccesses with others. “When I grad-uated from USF, I swore that oneday I would build an advertisingagency and give back to my univer-sity. It's a satisfying feeling that I cangive back and watch the studentsgrow. No matter how successful youare, that's something you don't getfrom going to work every day.”

He says the university gave him

his first introduction to the world ofadvertising and marketing in an edu-cational way. He recalls USF as a“young” and “energetic” place wherethe professors truly cared and gotinvolved with individual learningstyles of each student.

In addition to providing his almamater with the resources, knowledgeand hands on opportunities that willimpact students for years to come,Zimmerman says he'd like to buildthe program to set the precedencefor educating young talent industry-wide. “You’ve got to think globally,act locally,” he emphasizes morethan once.

“I saw this as an opportunity atmy alma mater because I think it canbe a great resource for attractingyoung talent for my own agency andother companies. If we are able toinfluence their learning with a morerelevant curriculum, then ultimately,it’s a win-win for the students and awin-win for the businesses that arelooking to hire these students.”

Last semester ZAP studentsworked on a real-life advertising casestudy—Papa John’s Pizza. The classculminated with a presentation bystudents to a review board whichincluded Papa John’s founder, JohnSchnatter, and Zimmerman.

“The students looked at this as agreat opportunity, not a challenge.It’s hard to take on challenges, butopportunities are there for the tak-ing,” Zimmerman says. “We sawthem shine in ways we didn’t knowthey could.”

Big East, Big Opportunities

As USF winds down on its inaugural year in the Big EastConference, early returns indi-cate USF Athletics has seenenormous benefits.

n Retail store BullsHeaven ownerJeffrey Neil Fox, the Bulls’ official on-site merchandise retailer, has investedmore than $500,000 into his on-siteand retail locations to capitalize on theever growing appetite of Bulls fans.Bright House Networks has alsojumped on the Bulls’ marketing cara-van, signing a five-year, multimilliondollar deal this past fall.

The move to the Big East got theattention of USF fans. Announcedattendance at Raymond JamesStadium averaged 38,865 per gamein 2005, compared with 27,257 pergame for six contests in 2004. TheUSF basketball program markedlyincreased attendance and revenuesby hosting Big East schools withhigh-profile basketball squads.Women’s basketball, men’s and

women’s soccer and volleyball alsosaw marked increases in attendance.

Big East membership gives anyUSF degree added name recognitionin major markets. The USF CareerCenter recently teamed with the otherleague members to form the Big EastCareer Center Consortium. One majorgoal of the consortium is to havecareer centers from across conferenceschools join together to hold live andvirtual job fairs that bring current stu-dents and alumni from differentschools together with employers.

The Tampa Convention and VisitorsBureau recently visited the Men’s BigEast Basketball Tournament to high-light the Tampa Bay area with otherconference representatives. Their hopeis that administrators will select Tampaas an outstanding location to entertainalumni, donors and fans.

Within the athletic department, oneof the largest attractions of Big Eastmembership was the chance to par-ticipate in the Bowl ChampionshipSeries, and Jim Leavitt’s football pro-gram capitalized quickly. Charlotte’sMeineke Car Care Bowl paid theBulls $1.1 million as the league’s rep-

resentative, and the bowls that haveagreements with the Big East in totalcontribute $12.5 million to the confer-ence’s coffers. Conference finish andthe particular bowl game a teamplays determines the size of the pay-out, but even if the team doesn’t playin a bowl game USF can expect atleast $1.5 million from that arrange-ment according to Rick Costello,associate athletic director and CFO forthe department.

USF made significant upgrades tothe Sun Dome and event operationsduring its first season of Big EastConference play, installing state-of-the-art video scoreboards, addingmore floor seats and food service,replacing the playing surface, hiringadditional game day staff and creatinga more exciting game atmosphere.

“We want to make sure our fansand guests have a great time at eachUSF event,” says Kosha Irby, assistantdirector of Athletics. “With all of theattention we are luring a lot of firsttime buyers. We want them tobecome repeat customers and enjoyour product for years to come.”

Superstar at Top of Her Game

There is an athlete on campusthat few people may know—anathlete who epitomizes the termstudent-athlete. Challenged tobalance her daily practice withthe softball team and 70-gameschedule, along with schoolworkand community service, rightfielder Tiffany Stewart excels atall she does.

n Stewart is a senior at USF. With a3.96 grade-point average, the psy-chology major was named a 2005Conference USA Scholar Athlete ofthe Year and earned theCoSIDA/ESPN The MagazineAcademic All-American distinction.

Big Turnaround

To say that Jose Fernandez haschanged the direction of the USFWomen’s Basketball program isan understatement. This yearthe team advanced to its first-ever NCAA ChampionshipTournament. But that’s just onemeasure of the program’s suc-cess. In the past five years thatFernandez has coached the Bulls(2001-06), USF has recorded a75-72 (.510) record with fourwinning seasons and three post-season appearances.

n In the five years prior (1996-01),the Bulls posted a 51-88 (.367)record with just one winning sea-son. Fernandez is just one winfrom tying for the second mostwins among head coaches in pro-gram history and nine from becom-

ing the all-time wins leader.Consider these remarkable

achievements for the 2005-06 USFWomen’s Basketball Program: • With 19 wins, USF recorded the

second most wins in school history(19-12). It was the program’s secondconsecutive winning season. • USF’s 12 home wins (12-3) equalsthe second most home wins inschool history. In addition, over thepast two years, the Bulls have post-ed a 26-5 record in the Sun Dome.• USF advanced to its third consec-utive postseason appearance thisseason and its first-ever NCAATournament. The Bulls were a No.9 seed and faced No. 8 seed USC inthe Bridgeport Region first round inNorfolk, VA.• The Bulls faced eight teams thatwere ranked in the Top 25 of boththe Associated Press and ESPN/USAToday polls this season, two ofwhich advanced to the 2006 FinalFour in Boston. • USF defeated two of the eight top25 foes—both in overtime—it facedthis season. The Bulls beat DePaul,79-77, in their inaugural BIG EASTConference game and Notre Dame,68-64, on the road.

But her success doesn’t endthere. Stewart is one of the bestathletes ever to take the field forUSF Softball. In 2005, she led theBulls in batting average (.399), slug-ging percentage (.627), on-basepercentage (.500) and walks (32),and finished tied for the lead inhome runs (9). The right fielderwas named a 2005 LouisvilleSlugger/NFCA All-American for herathletic achievements, becomingthe only USF student-athlete to earnboth the athletic and academic All-

America distinction last year.Acknowledged as one of the topplayers in the country, Stewart wasdrafted by the New EnglandRiptide, one of seven National ProFastpitch teams, earlier this year.

And despite all the work Stewartputs into her athletic training andacademics, the Odessa, Floridanative still finds time to give backto the community. She works withspecial needs children at summercamps and is a youth Sundayschool teacher at her church.

“Tiffany Stewart is the epitome ofan All-American student-athlete,”says Head Softball Coach KenEriksen. “She’s a great teammateand leader on the field, and off thefield her success is not only in theclassroom but in the communityand as a mentor. We are very, veryfortunate for her to wear the greenand gold and to represent not onlythe university and her family, butalso her community where shegrew up playing ball.”

It was hardly your ordinarydelivery. Sure, the baby wascute and had lots of hair. Butthis was no ordinary baby. Thiswas the first gorilla born atBusch Gardens Tampa Bay inthe theme park’s 46-year history.And, it was the first gorilla USFOB/GYN Catherine Lynch everdelivered.

n “I’ve been going to BuschGardens for about seven years nowworking with endangered gorillasand orangutans,” says Lynch.“Kishina [the mom] was my firstpatient; I feel like I have a true doc-tor-patient relationship with her. Itwas so exciting to hand her a verymuch desired baby.”

The birth made headlines aroundthe world. Kishina, the 33-year-oldgorilla mom had placenta previa, acomplication of pregnancy that islife-threatening to both mom andbaby. In placenta previa, the placen-ta, or afterbirth, is in front of theopening of the cervix.

Lynch and her colleague, JoanMcCarthy, assistant professor ofOB/GYN at USF, performed anemergency cesarean section on themom who had been experiencingdifficulties over several days. Shewas joined by two USF/TampaGeneral Hospital neonatologists,Robert M. Nelson, professor andchair of Pediatrics, and TomHavranek, assistant professor, amongothers. Aside from the skin being alittle thicker than human skin, Lynchsays the procedure was remarkablystandard.

That’s if you don’t consider thedelivery took place at BuschGardens’ zoological hospital with astaff of about 15 OB/GYNs, neona-tologists, vets, techs and cameramenon hand.

The little bundle, who would onlybe named after a national contest,weighed in at a healthy four pounds,

10 ounces. He brings the number ofgorillas at Busch Gardens to seven,all living in the park’s MyombeReserve habitat, a three-acre rainfor-est environment opened in 1992.

Lynch started helping out at BuschGardens seven years ago when thezoological park began a more activebreeding program for endangeredprimates. Two years ago she per-formed a C-section on another parkprimate—an orangutan who hadbeen in labor for 36 hours. Typically,though, she focuses her deliveries onhuman primates. She’s been deliver-ing those for more than 15 years,most at Tampa General Hospital.

Lynch says she has learned a lotabout animals through her work withBusch Gardens. “I continue to befascinated by them and the similari-ties between apes and humans.”

Bolingo, as he was eventuallynamed, is doing well at the park. His

name means “love” in Lingala, a lan-guage spoken in the Congo regionof Africa where endangered gorillaslike him are found. Bolingo was theclear winner among the names pro-posed, claiming 18,000 of the 58,000online votes.

The baby’s dad is a nine-year-oldwestern lowland gorilla namedCenzoo. He was transferred to BuschGardens from the Denver Zoo inMarch 2003 along with his own Dad,Koundu, a 29-year-old gorilla. USF: How much time did youspend on the 50th anniversary coffeetable book?

Huse: A little over three years. Itwas a labor of love. I had a lot offun exploring stories and USF ischock full of them and colorful char-acters, of course.

USF: What was the greatest thing youlearned about USF during the project?

Huse: The roads not taken—a lot ofbad roads and good ones, too.There are so many places where his-

tory could have branched off andturned into something different.

USF: The most surprising thing?

Huse: The constant conflict over thedirection of the university, not justamong academics, but students aswell. Today it seems like a welloiled machine from a distance, butthere were a lot of fundamental con-flicts early on.

USF: Such as?

Huse: The fight over the radio sta-tion was a big one. The station wasstudent-run and some of the musicwas student oriented. The rockshow didn't jive with what someacademics thought was in keepingwith the mission of the institution.The station’s students ended upspawning WMNF 88.5 FM.

USF: You’ve finished the book.What’s next?

Huse: I’ve got to finish my ownprojects. There are several thingsI’ve been working on, like myrestaurant book—the history ofTampa as told through its restaurantsand food.

USF: What are the top three treas-ures in the Special Collections?

Huse: First would be the personnel.The resources themselves don’t doanything unless people have accessto them. We have a great team; we’vemade a lot of progress. Next I’d saythe Oral History Program, which isstill evolving, and started in 1997.Last, I’d have to say the FloridianaCollection, not just the books, but themanuscript collections.

USF: What has been your greatestaccomplishment?

Huse: The best is yet to come.

Andy Huse

Andy Huse, assistant librarian inthe Special CollectionsDepartment and Florida StudiesCenter, came to USF in 1995 as atransfer student. Pursuing adegree in English at the time,Huse quickly realized his true pas-sion was history and changed hisacademic focus. In addition toundergraduate degrees in Englishand history, Huse earned master’sdegrees in history in 2000 and inlibrary science in 2005, from USF.

In 2002, Huse took on the role oflead researcher and photoarchivist for the university’s just-released 50th anniversary com-memorative coffee table book.Recently appointed to the USFfaculty, Huse’s research interestsinclude modern social history, oralhistory, the culinary arts and USF’sChinsegut Hill property.

USF: How did you become involvedwith USF Libraries?

Huse: It started in 1998 as a four-hour stint one evening a week toaugment odd jobs I was doing. Myfoot was in the door and one yearlater I became a fulltime staff mem-ber working in the Media Center.

USF: And with the Florida StudiesCenter?

Huse: I graduated with a master’s inhistory in 2000 and was trying to fig-ure out what to do next. The daybefore it closed, I heard about anopening in the Florida StudiesCenter and applied. I saw it as ahuge opportunity—a playground—there were so many facets to thejob. There still are.

USF: Why Florida?

Huse: People don’t always choosethe places in their lives; sometimesthe places choose them. Like Phyllis
