GRADE 4 Unit One Life Science: A. Diversity of Life (Days 1 – 9; two weeks) Content Standard: The students will use scientific skills and processes to explain the dynamic nature of living things, their interaction and the results from the interaction that occur over time. Resources

1.3.A.1 Students are able to: Compare and explain how external features of plants help them survive in different environments

Diversity of Life Each plant species has structures that help it deal with the different environmental conditions of the school yard ecosystem. By studying the plant species in different soils within a schoolyard ecosystem, students can see how plant populations deal with environmental pressures

How Healthy is your soil? Soil testing of school yard soils (See Appendix)

Is the soil in the school yard a suitable environment for different types of plants? Do different plants thrive in different soils found in the schoolyard? Ask the students if they have observed the soils in their neighborhoods and the types of plants they have seen growing there. Ask the students to share what they know about the plants growing in their neighborhoods. Ask especially if any family members have gardens. Brainstorm about what things are needed for the growth and
