A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR LADY STAR OF THE SEA CHURCH

Dedicated in 1882, St. Patrick’s Cathedral located on the plot of land on North Carancahua now occupied by the American Bank

Plaza, became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Corpus Christi when the Diocese was formed in 1912. Leading contributors to the

church were Captain Miflin Kenedy, who donated land, money, and pews. Mrs. Kenedy, who donated the sanctuary windows, and the

wife of then Corpus Christi Mayor J. B. Murphy, gave the statues. The ladies of the Altar Society gave the main altar. Various

parishioners, in memory of their deceased family members, donated the other stained glass windows. As the Diocese grew, a new

cathedral was planned and was dedicated in 1940. St. Patrick’s continued to have daily Mass for the children of Incarnate Word

Academy then located nearby. In 1951, after it caught fire, the church was dismantled and the sanctuary and main part of the nave

were moved to the present location to serve the newly created “Our Lady Star of the Sea” parish. The altar, statues and stained glass

windows were saved and reinstalled in the little church. Thus a portion of the old St. Patrick’s Cathedral remains standing, a memorial

to the pioneers of Corpus Christi. Over the years, the parish has grown to include families from all parts of Corpus Christi, Portland,

Gregory, Taft, Aransas Pass and Ingleside who seek a small “country church” atmosphere of worship and fellowship. In addition, our

parishioners represent a broad cross-section of cultures and backgrounds from various parts of the United States and a number of

foreign countries.

The John G. and Marie Stella Kenedy Memorial Foundation

Sarita Kenedy East established the foundation in 1960 to support and fund Catholic educational, charitable, and religious activities in Texas, primarily

in the region of the Diocese of Corpus Christi (as that entity then existed).

The mission of the Foundation is to nurture and advance activities which

contribute to the following core values: Helping break the cycle of poverty, Assisting people to help themselves, Nurturing support and love for

Catholic institutions, Developing the Catholic faith, Learning, Spirituality, Respect, Cooperative/collaborative partnership

KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH

There’s no better way to deepen our Lenten practice than to review the Ten Commandments. The first three, having to do with our right relationship to God, get the most ink. The one we busy people probably have the most problem with is keeping holy the Sabbath.

If we take this commandment literally, babies will go undiapered and dishes will stay on the table, or perhaps meals will not be served. The sick will go unattended and nothing that has anything to do with physical labor will be done. Is mental labor really work? How about changing that dirty diaper (poor baby!)?

We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real Sabbath time in our lives. The point of this commandment is that God has given us a great gift: one whole day per week when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and rejoice. As Psalm 19 proclaims: “The law of the Lord is perfect, / refreshing the soul” (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a great gift, to be received from God with joy, not with nitpicking.
