Kurian Says He's Raising Concerns
About Secularism
Justice Kurian Joseph of the Supreme
Court, who had earlier objected to a
judges' conference being held on Good
Friday , declined to attend a dinner
hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi
for top judges on Saturday because of
family engagements on Good Friday and
Easter.
In a letter to the PM, he also
requested Modi to keep in mind the
feeling of all communities while holding
such functions. He questioned why the
conference was being held during the holy
festival of Christians when no important
programmes are held during Diwali,
Dussehra, Holi, Eid, Bakrid etc. He told
PTI in Kochi that he only wanted to raise
the “serious concern“ about secularism in
India.
Chief Justice of India H L Dattu said
Justice Kurian was the only one who had

objected to holding the conference on
Good Friday and refused to comment on
the controversy arising out of letters
written by his brother judge to him and
the PM on the issue. Informing the Prime
Minister that he would not be attending a
dinner being hosted for top judges on
Saturday because of family engagements
on account of Good Friday and Easter,
Justice Kurian Joseph of the Supreme
Court said, “I know it is too late to
reschedule the events. But being the
guardian of Indian secularism, I request
your Honour to kindly have in mind these
concerns also while scheduling events and
benevolently show equal importance and
respect to the sacred days of all religions
which are also declared as national
holidays. I have shared these concerns
with the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India as
well,“ he said in his letter to the PM.
“I regret my inability to attend the
event as the Conference coincides with
the Good Friday ceremonies.Good Friday
is a day of great religious significance to
us, marking the Crucifixion and death of
Jesus Christ,“ he added. “Irrespective of
the religion, Diwali, Holi, Dussehra, Eid,
Bakrid, Christmas, Easter etc. are great
days of festival celebrations in the
neighbourhood. Your good self would
kindly appreciate that no important
programmes are held during sacred and
auspicious days of Diwali, Dussehra, Holi,
Eid, Bakrid etc., though we have holidays
during that period as well,“ he said.

Kurian said, “I only tried to raise the issue
of secular values of the country and there
is nothing personal. However, there is an
attempt by a section in the media to shift
the focus.“
He also added he would have
definitely attended the PM's dinner if he
was in Delhi since it was on a Saturday .
On the other hand, Chief Justice of
India H L Dattu on Saturday said, “I did
not receive communication from any other
Supreme Court judge except Justice
Kurian not to hold the conference of Chief
Justices on Good Friday. No other judge
expressed any objection on the issue,“
Justice Dattu told mediapersons after
attending a felicitation ceremony for the
judges in the premises of the Supreme
Court.
He, however, refused to go public on
his differences with Justice Kurian who
had said that the judiciary was giving a
wrong message by holding conferences on
“holy and national holidays“.
