It's a big laundry list of information including but not limited to: parameters for pulses, start times for rides, lengths of holds, groups for competitives, maps, trail order, length and description (may or may not be detailed), notes on obstacles, passwords, CRI (cardiac recovery index) and when they happen, what is expected for best condition judging and what the "ride time" is. BUT WAIT - there's more! Some trails have oddities that the ride manager give you that keep you and your horse safe. What about those water tanks on the trail, can you sponge in them? Do you check in at the timer at the start of the ride or does the ride start in another part of camp? Sometimes you will be required to walk certain sections of the trail, ask you to be especially careful of other park and trail users, and welcome a new vet or volunteer who has never done this before. Some ride managers say, "If you do not do this certain thing you will be disqualified." And the ride manager is allowed to make these additional rules, because often they are requirements of the park and trail system or the result of some past situation that warrants the seriousness of the request for riders. How do you know these things if you do not attend the ride meeting? And why would a rider skip a ride meeting if you are present in camp? There's a lot of information to be shared and the best way to do it is all at once. A pet peeve of many ride managers is the rider who shows up after the ride meeting or just before the ride start and asks to be briefed on the trail and parameters. Ride managers DO get that if there is an evening ride meeting - not everyone may be in camp. But if you have arrived please attend. It does not matter if it is the same trail and the same ride manager that has done this ride for many, many years. Sometimes things change! Sometimes personnel change, trail conditions change, parameters change. It is your responsibility as a rider to be at the ride meeting to hear about the ride first hand, listen and not talk to your neighbor, and follow the recommendations that are given. Please make ride meeting attendance one of your priorities. You will have a much better ride experience if you attend the meeting and more fun and few questions on the trail. The Ride Meeting

Every ride has a ride meeting. Do you check in at the timer at the start of the ride or does the ride start

in another part of camp? Horses vary a great deal in what level of nutrition is

required to maintain desired body condition and

muscle mass. Horses have not been selected or bred

based on feed efficiency, feed conversion, or rate of

gain, so there a lot of variation between horses.

A horse that is a hard keeper could require more

Calories per day to maintain body condition than an

easy keeper doing the same work. One way to help

this horse will be to feed high quality forage that has

a high relative feed value that is associated with

higher digestible energy per pound. A good choice

might be an alfalfa or alfalfa/grass mix that was cut at

early maturity so it has fine stems and lots of leaves.

This hay could be fed free choice or at least three to

four times per day at a rate of about 2% body weight

or above per day.

The hard keeper could also benefit from a

commercial feed that is high fat (8-9% or higher) and

controlled starch and sugar (so it can be fed at higher

levels) with amino acid fortification (lysine,

methionine, and threonine) to help maintain muscle

mass. This feed can be fed a minimum of two times

per day, and preferably three to four times per day so

that the quantity being fed can be increased while

controlling risk of starch overload through smaller

individual meals. The quantity can be increased with

the desired forage to produce weight gain, and then

adjusted to maintain desired weight.

A high-fat supplement that is 20+% fat can also be

used as a top dressing.

This feeding plan can also be useful in reducing the

risk of having ulcers redevelop after a horse has been

treated with appropriate veterinarian-prescribed

medication. Free choice forage or pasture is a good

option so the horse’s stomach is not empty for long

periods of time. Alfalfa contains levels of calcium

and magnesium that can be useful in buffering acid in

the stomach.

High fat, controlled-starch feeds fed in small meals at

frequent intervals could also be useful in reducing the

risk of recurrence.

AHDRA’s Triple Crown Update!

The second Jewel in the Crown of AHDRA's Triple Crown award is now in the record books. Speaking on behalf of the managers, Lori Windows and Jen Allen, 2014's My Back Yard

was perhaps the best ever. NO ONE had to be pulled in or out of the campground, no one got hurt, no one got too lost, no one ran overtime, and there were only three pulls all weekend. One was a Rider Option. Considering the heat and humidity of the weekend, that speaks for the skill and concern of riders and veterinarian staff. GOOD JOB ALL!! Awards were plentiful. Lots of Auntie Lois Fudge (and the famous fudge lady even made an appearance and was awarded the Spirit of American Award) along with the other great quantities of food she made for management staff and volunteers. Hope I'm still that capable when I'm 90 years old. A big thanks to TSC, EQ Feeds, Cosequin, Run Along Farm, Bureau Valley Veterinary Service, Nickelson Plumbing and Heating, the entire Gothard family, the entire Allen family, along with all the UMECRA and AHDRA members who pitched in to help and make the weekend a success. Study: Post-Exercise Snacks

Benefit Horses By Christa Lesté-Lasserre, MA Aug 11, 2014 www.thehorse.com Your horse just had a fabulous workout, got really sweaty, and used up a lot of energy. Now what does he want you to do? A) Put him back in his stall or paddock and say, “Good job, Buck. Lunch’ll be ready in an hour.” B) Load him up in the trailer and head for home, where plenty of food and water is waiting for him. C) Feed and water him right away, and give him plenty of time to finish his food. Italian researchers say that while many riders tend to practice the first two techniques, it might be time to switch to the final option in order to keep their horses happiest. “Horses should eat and drink after intense exercise and racing, but in reality most horses fast and travel before a race and receive food when they come back home,” said Barbara Padalino, PhD, researcher at the University of Bari Aldo Moro Veterinary School, in Bari, Italy. “Or, in some stables, feeding time is scheduled and not in accordance with the training plan,” she added. “The caretaker feeds all animal at the same time. So the horse that raced at 11 a.m. must wait until 1 p.m. for food!” In her study Padalino and fellow researchers followed 12 Standardbred harness racing mares for two months as they performed basic training (essentially, a control group), sprint training, and racing. After exercise the horses returned to their individual stalls, and the researchers evaluated the mares' physical parameters (heart rate, respiratory rate, and rectal temperature) and behavior. The team observed the latter for four hours over several intervals following exercise. They found that these horses, which were in good health, returned to normal physical parameters within an hour after exercise. If mares raced or performed intense (sprint) exercise, they spent most of the first hour eating and drinking and rarely laid down or rested. In the following hour the horses urinated frequently (probably because of all the intense drinking in the first hour, Padalino said), and after that they rested. There were no signs of depression or

unwanted behavior such as cribbing, which indicates that the horses were “well adapted” to their situation. However, Padalino added, the frequent presence of humans interacting with the horses (grooming, cleaning, feeding, etc.) and the horses’ young age (between 3 and 5 years old) might have made the horses less likely to be “bored” or develop bad habits. This study provides a basis for what owners should expect in healthy, content sport horses after exercise, Padalino said. Scientists call this an “ethogram”—a list of typical, expected behaviors and physical parameters that define what’s “normal” for horses in certain situations. As such, Padalino said it’s clear that exercised horses should be allowed to eat and drink immediately after cooling down in order to restore the lost water and energy. If that doesn’t fit your stable’s organization, she added, it's time for your organization to evolve. “To improve welfare, we should try to adapt horse management to the horse’s behavioral needs and not to the humans’ needs,” she told The Horse. Likewise, if a horse isn’t interested in eating or drinking after intense exercise, there could be something amiss. “Watch the animal after exercise,” she said. “Frequently there’s a lot of attention to horses before exercise or a race or competition, but not after” Strenuous exercise and racing are more likely to lead to health problems than just light exercise, she said, so it’s particularly important to watch horses after an intense workout. “Any abnormal behavior after strenuous exercise could be a red flag for a possible risk,” Padalino said. “We should always observe our animals, but it is really important after intense exercise.”

A Short Story… The Great Horse Rescue By Ruby (age 8) and Audrey Thorp (age 7) (Grandchildren of Peggy Pasillas) June 12, 2014 It all started when the phone rang and a neighbor called and said there were some horses reported running loose in our neighborhood. He thought they were our horses and wanted to let us know. We ran outside to check and thankfully, our horses were safe and sound in their own pasture. We were still concerned about the situation. So, we grabbed some lead ropes from the barn and were off on a Horse Rescue! We got into Grandpa’s truck and watched out the window while we drove to the last place they were seen. We walked along the fence-lines and looked from some hill tops and all around, watching for clues. We found horse manure and followed some hoof prints. We knew they had been here. We got back into the truck and drove into a neighborhood cul-de-sac. We walked some trails and a gravel road looking for the loose horses. We had our ropes ready in case we saw them. We met a nice lady and explained that we were tracking some loose horses. She said a man who lived up the road owned some horses. As we walked towards his house, we saw a horse pasture. It was empty and some of the fence was torn down. The horses had escaped from their pasture! We went up to the house and knocked on the door and a man answered. We told him that a white horse and a brown horse were wandering loose, that his fence was torn down and the pasture was empty! He thanked us for letting him know and that he would go out and find them. He noticed that we had our lead ropes and were ready for a rescue. We never did find the horses ourselves. But, we felt good knowing that we did all we could by letting the owner know that his horses were loose and we played an important part in a horse rescue!
