Welcome, finally, to the start of the 2016 season. It feels like it has
taken an eternity to arrive.
Our pre-season campaign has had some mixed results as we tried
different combinations and played teams in higher leagues than
ourselves but it certainly gave us something to build on.
We have recruited well, not just in the players stock but also in the
coaching circle, welcome and good luck Phil and Homer who are
taking the reserves.
Welcome to all the new faces and the old ones back for another
exciting challenging year in which we have very clear goals. The
obvious one is to win the title as there is no point entering if you
don’t have this ambition. Then I look at my role and see where am
I going with being a coach - and of course I have your own
personal goals/growth you wish to achieve. But I see my role to
pass on the knowledge you have and try to push the players to be
the best they can be, this then hopefully results in them playing at
a higher level.
We welcome Tawa to Maidstone Park for the first league game of
the season, we know it will be a very tough encounter. Good luck
but not too much today!
Good luck to all teams in the club, may you have a successful
season.
Enjoy today’s game, get behind the team and I look forward to
catching up with you in the clubhouse after the game.

Football Ferns targeting the Dutch
City Review
The Football Ferns will head to Europe next month to take on rivals the Netherlands as they continue their build-up to the Rio Olympics.
Coach Tony Readings has selected an 18- strong squad for the game which will take place near Amsterdam on 7 April, during the FIFA international window. The match pits the 16th world ranked Football Ferns against the number 12 ranked Dutch team, who beat the New Zealand side 1-0 in the opening game of last year’s FIFA World Cup in Canada.
The Netherlands narrowly missed out on a spot at the Olympics, but are beginning their build-up for 2017 when they will host the European Championship.
Readings has selected his strongest squad, built around the experienced core of professionals based in Europe, USA and Japan. With the squad spread around the world, New Zealand Football is keen to utilise the FIFA windows for internationals to bring the squad together. “We don’t spend as much time together as we would like because the players are spread around the world so these opportunities are important to continue the momentum and continuity we have built over recent times,” said Readings.
“This is a chance for us to further refine and improve our game as we progress to Rio.” The team has one further international window in June and then plan some games on the way to Rio for the Olympics. “While we will be working on all parts of our game, the emphasis will be on a continuation in the improvement of our game in possession. That’s something we have improved a lot but want to continue to evolve.” Readings said the Dutch side offers some quality opposition after recent wins against France and Japan
Football Ferns in Portugal . . .
City Review
The Football Ferns have finished fourth in their maiden Algarve Cup campaign after a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout loss to Iceland in Vila Real Santo Antonio, Portugal on Thursday morning (NZ time).
A 27th minute goal from Iceland midfielder Andrea
Ran Hauksdottir gave the 19th-ranked Iceland side
the lead but the Football Ferns fought back and pull ed level in 69
th minute through an excellent Amber
Hearn strike – her 50th for her country – across
goal into the corner of the net. The Football Ferns also had a strong claim for penalty waved away in the second half after a heavy challenge on Betsy Hassett in the Iceland area while several free kick opportunities came and went in the dying stages as the New Zealand side pressed for the winner.
But penalties were needed to decide the outcome and both teams scored each of their five spot kicks before going to sudden death where Anna Green’s sixth penalty was saved and Iceland sealed the result with their sixth strike. Football Ferns coach Tony Readings said his team found a higher level after a mixed first half performance but it still wasn’t enough on the day.
“We didn’t play as well in the first half as we would have liked. We were a bit under par but were still the better team but we weren’t as dominant as we should have been,” Readings said. “We’ve gone in 1-0 down but we knew we had an extra two or three gears to go up and we’d be able to claw our way back in the second half which we did.”
“We’re bitterly disappointed because we dominated that second half, they’ve hardly got in our half. We scored a great goal and then we had a definite penalty turned down, we missed one-on-ones and we’ve had lots of crosses and set plays and we’ve not been able to get the breakthrough. That’s been the story of the tournament for us.”

City Review
Today sees us host to newly promoted Palmerston Nth Marist and I’d like to
personally welcome Simon and his team to our facility.
We have been working hard for the past 9 weeks on bringing together a large
squad on which to be able to select from. We are definitely benefiting from the mix
of youth and experienced players and the combination is producing a great
foundation for us to work upon. Bria Sargent and Mikaela Hunt take the honours of
being our Co-Captains again for the season and leading the team on and off the
field. Thank you to the players returning and a warm welcome to the new players
experiencing central league football for the first time with the club, having grown
and developed within our club environment. I’d like to again acknowledge the
“behind the scenes” work that happens from others. Christine Williams and Sharon
Lavery have really taken the pressure off the coaching staff ensuring that things tick
along and we are the best prepared we can be as a squad. A big “thanks” from us
all.
To get this first game out of the way and the nerves settled will be great. We know
that Palmerston Nth Marist will bring with them a lot of fight and hard work and we
don’t underestimate them at all. All the best to our Premier team who are taking
on Vic Uni today as well at 3pm. Lastly thanks to everyone who has turned out
today to come and support the team in our first step of the season.

Upper Hutt Women’s Premier League v Victoria University
Today sees us host the Vic Uni team to our facility for the opening game of our
season. Opening day is always a cagey affair with clubs not sure where there
strengths and weakness lie. The team have worked hard in the preseason to learn
the formation and style we want to play. We will start the season as a very young
but eager side. We welcome 2 players back to the club in Holly and Talia and have
as many as 6 young ladies making their Prem League debut in Zoe, Dani, Rosie,
Caitlyn, Sydnie and Georgia, so good luck to all.
Lastly thanks to everyone who has turned out today to come and support the team.
