Hello and welcome to Memorial Park for today’s Central League and Capital Premier League action.
It’s a crucial game for our Reserves today against Brooklyn Northern United, who will be desperate for a win. We need the three points just as much so expect a very tense 90 minutes. Our club depth is being really tested at the moment with a number of injuries and a few players unavailable, so the lads will need to play their socks off and work extra hard for each other in a very important game.
Grant Plumbing Petone deserved better headlines for a fantastic performance mid week against a strong Wellington Phoenix side. Graham was delighted with the 3-3 draw and also with how they boys played. True to his word, he gave a few young lads an opportunity. It was the ideal stage for them to show their quality and a couple took their chance nicely. A similar performance today will give us a chance to grab three more points and push towards the Top 3. That has to be our goal for the remainder of the year, and a Top 3 finish would give us a great platform for next season.
The millionaire shopping spree has continued with the top football clubs in Europe as the new season approaches and transfers are completed at ridiculous prices. The question for our beloved teams is “have they spent wisely?” Has Liverpool finally made some decent signings? Did we use the Harrods Gold Card or the Briscoe’s 50% off card? I suspect the latter and am dreading another very long season ahead . . .
Good luck to all Petone teams this weekend, especially our women’s 1st and 2nd teams. Big games tomorrow for theses ladies so the best of luck!! Remembers, play hard but play fair !!!

I’ve recently been writing some poetry on the stoop of my Upper Hutt cottage. I write about all kinds of things, like horses running up fire-breaks, people using passing lanes properly and… Petone Football Club. Please take time to read this, possibly with a big mug of Red Wine or, if you don’t drink, a powerade mixed with Echinacea. I hope you like it, if you don’t come and buy me a drink aye?
Petone Football Club is a happy and proud place,There is quality on show and no headers hitting the face.We look to play with the ball on the deck,Anything launched up in the air is met with a cry of “oh heck..”We’ve won the Chatham Cup a few times,It seems the only way we’ll ever win it again is by spending a few dimes.Our current first team captain is Davey Lane,This guy is hard, he never shows pain.Wayne Ebert is a name you should know at the club,Now a full time reporter for our weekly review and a cut above.The kitchen is always pumping and feeding the tums,Sue Pickering loves to yell out to the balcony “number 41!”We play in the blue and white colours you know so well,Whenever we play Lower Hutt the crowd numbers swell.Our junior football has always been strong,One thing Tom Randles likes to say is “don’t pump it long”Craig Deadman loves to use the clubroom lectern,The poor guys supports Liverpool, will he ever learn?Today we take on a handy Western Suburbs side,Lets get behind our lads and roar as loud as the incoming tide.This poem has been written by a man with a few issues,If you seen him crying into his beer hand him some tissues.We all love the this great club called Petone,Young Richie McLay still looks quite boney.That will do for this emotional anthem,Good luck to our lads, may they fly as high as a Bantam!

The Wellington Phoenix had to come from three goals down to draw 3-3 with a committed Petone side in a pre-season friendly at Memorial Park on Tuesday night.
The Central League side shocked the Hyundai A-League team with three goals in 20 minutes either side of halftime and looked headed for a shock victory till the Phoenix, inspired by some young substitutes, found another gear and scored three times in 20 minutes.
Sam Greene struck first for Petone in the 31st minute with a superb curling right-foot strike into the top corner of Lewis Italiano’s net.
Van Elia added a second five minutes later from the penalty spot after he had been brought down by Phoenix midfielder Vince Lia.
Six minutes into the second spell Van Elia struck again with a well-struck direct free kick and the game looked up for the Phoenix.
Advised by the sports science team, assistant coach Chris Greenacre, who was in charge of the team with Ernie Merrick on his way to a coach’s meeting in Australia, had planned a number of substitutions and one of those was that Roly Bonevacia would play only 60 minutes.
With two minutes left of his time on the field Bonevacia got his team on the board with a direct free-kick struck low and just inside the post.
Twelve minutes later Phoenix skipper Andrew Durante played a lovely long ball to Michael McGlinchey who controlled the ball superbly and crossed for teenager James McGarry to score with a header.
The youngsters Greenacre had introduced added a zip to the Phoenix’ game and two of the kids combined for the equaliser with Sapreet Singh providing the cross for another teenager, Logan Rogerson, to head home.
Greenacre said Petone had made life difficult for his team and that it had made the match the type of hit out the Phoenix were looking for.
“Petone defended well and scored a couple of really good goals,” Greenacre said.
“We didn’t move the ball quickly enough and gave too much possession away.
“Tough games like this are what we are looking for in pre-season, and it was particularly pleasing that the youngsters did so well when they went on.
“Their enthusiasm lifted us and I thought we were going to get a winner in the last minutes.”

Womens premier
2015 Women’s Football
Our 1st team is only one point away from officially taking out the Premier League. This puts us well ahead of the club plan to develop women’s football. Taking out the title would give the ladies the opportunity to fight for promotion into the Central League. The team is carrying a broken thumb, a suspicious knee and a few other niggly injuries, but hopefully the finale will be worth the battle wounds.
After the disappointment of being relegated from Div 1 at the halfway point, the Powerex Petone Reserves have shown what they are made of. They went back to the drawing board, had a few drinks together and then re-started the season with a 5-0 win against Stop Out, followed by another 5-0 win away to Kapiti. It certainly looked like the ladies where on track to bounce straight back to Div 1. Another win against BNU had us in good shape for the derby game against Petone Power Rangers the following week. The battle commenced and the Reserves came away with a well-deserved 6-0 win. Flying high in the league, the following week saw us entertain Vic Uni, a superb performance saw a 10-0 win. The 6-1 win last week against a tough Naenae side saw us clinch promotion as Champions with a game to go. The Reserves are up against Wainui this week, which will be the most challenging game yet. A massive ‘well done’ to all the ladies in the reserves for keeping their heads held high and playing superb football. They’re back where they belong, as CHAMPIONS.
Our 3rd team are unfortunately sitting at the bottom of the table. But they have had a great season and have had a lot of fun, and really, that’s the main thing.

Angela Eglinton is someone doing an amazing amount of work at PFC. Her work on the Junior Management Committee is second to none and she is also a key part of the club’s Communications Team. Ever a friendly face you see around the club, she always takes time to stop and have a chat. Ang is a very important part of our club and we would be lost without her.
Position at Club and how long have you been in this role?
I am a member of the Junior Management Committee and have been on there for about three years now. I am also part of the fabulous Communications Team - an area I am very passionate about.
Previous involvement at the club?
Prior to joining the committee I coordinated the Nursery grade and First Kicks programmes when my children were just starting out in football.
Best thing that has happened at the club since your time in the above role?
The Whole of Football programme and the introduction of the Director of Junior Football role at Petone FC have changed the junior game for the better. There is now such a strong focus on player development and the children get so much more out of the game from a younger age.
Where do you see the club in the next 5 years?
I would love to see the club continue to thrive at a junior level and establish a really strong link for players from junior through to senior football. There is definitely a need to develop programmes for our talented players and provide them with opportunities to enhance their broader football skills. But just as important is the need to support those players who keep coming back year after year because they love the game and the social side of football.
Who is your second favourite club?
You cannot live in my house without supporting Liverpool - so I guess it has to be them.
