the PRESIDENTS RAMBLINGS
Greetings All, Well, we done had a show. And from the comments I have received it was a good one. We had a LOT of people come through the event (At times it was pretty darn full) I talked to a lot of new carvers and potential members and I think we generated a lot of interest in wood carving and the MWCA. Before we get to some of the financial details and such, the most important part. It takes a lot of folks to make this work. Gary S and Kathy W (Entry) Jim I (Prize Solicitation and Raffle) Art C and Ray S (Publicity) Norm D (Judging) Chuck P, Jim I, Arnold P, Bob H, Sherri F, Stan T, Dick S, John H, Jonathan L and Larry D (Security). Thanks to all the folks who stepped forward ( and arose at the butt crack of dawn) to make this happen. In addition, this year we had a larger setup and tear-down crew, Thanks to all who showed up. With enough people it is easy and that is good. A special thank you is warranted to our Membership Secretary, Bernadette H. She has been weathering some difficult times and wasn't expected to make the show but made it anyway. Thanks for all that you do for the Association, Bernie. There where 90 Entry’s in the show. (But there were some really good carvings in all levels, and a lot of new names on entry sheets). The Poland Town Hall seemed to work well. It is small enough to be easily set up and taken down, but big enough to do the show. The lighting is excellent and some folks noticed the OTHER restroom sign pointing down the stairs. (For those who didn't, the BIG restrooms are downstairs, no waiting).
The total for Ribbons is not correct, it should be higher. There where some issues with the Judging form for the Intermediate Level and I do not believe all of the ribbons awarded were recorded. Half of the Judges declined the stipend. $320 was budgeted for this. At some point, we lost count of separate income from Raffle and Merchandise sales. There should be an expense for T-Shirts, Hats Etc, If all Judging fees Accepted $320. Ribbons estimated at $300, T-Shirts/Hats Estimated at $100, This number would be +$529.90 So we did well on the Show finances. We made enough to pay for the show and the Associations Insurance bill for the year. If we were to do this again, we could actually LOWER the entry fees and vendor fees and still cover our costs. ( If we do this again we Should lower the fees. The Town of Poland provided us a low rental rate for a Non-Profit, Non-revenue producing events, and that’s what we should be aiming for.)
Show Finances
Expenses Income
Hall Rental $195.00 Entry Fees $775.00

Ribbons (1) $284.93
Judges (2) $160.00

MWCA CHAPTER REPORTS Southern Maine Woodcarvers Guild We canceled our Saturday, August 4 meeting since the only RSVPs that I had received, were to let me know that they would not be able to attend. We held our Tuesday meeting. August 21st, Jim Norton was there working on a very graceful sea-gull in flight, Bob Hall was working on civil war era field cannon. He had turned the barrel on a lathe and was working on the carriage. We also had two new members there, Marty Friberg, who is a re-tired Osteopathic Physician with a lot of carving experience. She winters in Florida and is active carving there, she lives in Cape Elizabeth. Welcome, Marty. The other new member was Warren Houlette. Warren is a new carver. Using the current issue of Woodcarving Illustrated, we familiarized Warren with the different types of carving that are the wealth of our craft. This issue holds a wealth of information about carving;
1. There is an article about carving gloves
2. An article about carving whimsical owls.
3. 3, An interesting take on the eagle cane.
4. Another whimsical carving this time a dragon.
5. A cottonwood gothic church.
6. A primer on power carving.
And on and on... Welcome, Warren. We also had a visit from Art Fahie, owner of Bar Mills Scale Model Works, who just stopped in to check us out, It was a great meeting, the time just flew. Dick Shryock (207) 317-0543
I just wanted to let everyone know about a carver in Exeter, ME who is looking for some folks to carve with his contact info is: Name: Ed Chapin Email: [email protected] Residence: 350 Cider Hill Rd Exeter ME 04435-3010 So if you know anyone who would like to carve with Ed please contact him. I suggested that he might think about forming a group of his own and he said that he might take a stab at that. So if you have any advice that you can offer please let him know. Maine Wood Carvers Show
Thanks to all the workers who made the show possible. It is a beautiful building with ample parking, an access ramp, and wonderful natural lighting were much appreciated. I was very excited to be a part of the show. The venue was carefully set up to make the best advantage of the space. There were wonderful entries showcasing a wide range of catagories. The Raffle table held a plethora of marvelous items. The donors were very generous. Carving books, paint, carvings, a Detailer burner with case, etc. This attracted many ticket purchases and generated excitement from the hope to be winners. There was a sharping service available, a wood vendor, and MDI had an awesome variety of tools, books, mounts, paints, sealers, feet and eyes and items I have not tried. The knife sharpener, who traveled 600 miles, was busy all day .He and wife said it was one of the best shows and venues of their year. The chance to reconnect with friends and to meet new carvers was special. The committee merits a big Thank You for all their hard work. There were people visiting all throughout the show. Our featured carver, Chuck Perry, had some of the carving subjects he has at the Shaker Village. . Among his carving display were several of the animals he has created for his work at the Shaker Village. Chuck had his Percheron, and other farm animals as well as his owl and loons. A display to enjoy. There was a lot of interest in the classes he conducts there. Norm Devonshire is also affiliated at Shaker Village in a teaching capacity. There are special events held there and it has been my pleasure to attend them. I was impressed with the work displayed by Maine Carvers and others who entered from other states and from Canada. There is no way to mention everything and everyone who made it such a pleasing show. Carvers are special people. It was a good feeling to be part of a MWCA show again. Carol Durgin
