Page 2: UPMG CONFERENCE PROGRAMME 2010

Dear Delegate,

On behalf of the UPMG, and the executive, I am delighted to warmly welcome you to the 2010 UPMG Annual Conference in Torquay. We have a packed and exciting programme that is designed to provide you with ideas and support for the coming year.

For those attending for the first time I hope you enjoy yourselves and find the programme informative, however if there is anything that you need please feel free to ask me, or any executive member who will be happy to help you. Our newcomer’s reception on Sunday evening is a great way to meet other delegates and I look forward to seeing you there.

For our regular delegates it is great to see you again, and I hope that you enjoy this year’s conference, and that it gives you lots of food for thought.

We always look closely at feedback given by our members, and try to improve the event year on year; therefore we have included many topics in the programme that were requested following our Troon conference.

We start the conference this year with our Keynote Speaker Ian Maynard, and we are also pleased to have Tony Manning, a familiar face for many, speaking on Tuesday morning, these general sessions are designed to support you to develop yourself and your teams. Our chosen topics this year include; Web to Print, Scanning and Archiving, Campus Wide Digital Print Strategy and life with an Apple. I am very grateful to the members who are taking part in these sessions.

I am pleased to welcome our International visitors, Bob Lane, from Arizona State University, and Justine Wilson, from Waikato Print, who is also the Financial Co-ordinator for Nippa, who are both giving presentations. Please take some time to introduce yourselves to Bob and Justine over the next few days.

I would also like to thank our conference sponsors and exhibitors for their continued support, without them we would not be able to hold this event. There will be many opportunities for you to discuss and meet with our suppliers during the conference, and please visit the exhibition during the coffee and lunch breaks.

The social calendar for the conference is very full; starting with the drinks reception this evening, a great opportunity to meet up with old and new friends alike. Tomorrow night we have a new format with a Viva Las Vegas theme for the evening’s dinner, with casino tables for fun. On Tuesday we have our networking afternoon and members have the choice of a trip to Dartmouth by steam train and river cruise, or an afternoon of Golf. Tuesday night, as always, is our Annual Awards dinner when we celebrate the achievements of our members throughout the year, and we are pleased to have coverage from Print Week.

This is your conference; it is designed to give you knowledge, support and ideas to benefit you in your workplace. Please enjoy the conference, and take advantage of everything it has to offer. I cannot guarantee that the weather will match last year’s Scottish heat wave, but I hope that the programme will more than live up to your expectations.

Warmest Regards

Rebecca HanlonChairman

We also thank all those companies that have provided prizes for the Grand Raffle. Your generosity is very much appreciated by UPMG members.

Regency Suite 0935 - 1015 Sessions 1: “The final countdown” (part 1) (members only)

Ian MaynardDirector of CSES & Professor of SportsPsychology, Sheffield Hallam University

Fundamentally the presentation will replicate a session conducted with the coaches of theBritish Sailing Team about three months prior to the Athens Olympics. The aim of the workshop in 2004 was to help the coaches identify strategies

for helping the sailors, strategies for helping the team and strategies for helping themselves, in the final build-up to the Games.

Specifically coaches were asked to generate pertinent goals and confidence enhancement strategies for their sailors, consider team-building techniques

that may positively influence the cohesion of the squad and most importantly, determine what they needed to do to ensure they were personally fully prepared

for the Olympics.

The presentation will also highlight some ‘What If’s’. ‘What If’s’ are potential catastrophe situations that may arise during the competition. The technique is

used to enhance the client’s ability to rationalise in stressful situations and build a positive plan of action to deal with the issue. Throughout the presentation the

parallels and similarities between elite sport and business will be identified.

Ultimately it is hoped that many of the strategies and techniques outlined can be used

Paul Bishop Print Services Manager Sheffield Hallam University

The presentation will describe the journey Sheffield Hallam University has taken from deciding to replace its current electronic job submission system with a new web to print solution, to its implementation.

The journey has not been an easy one and obstacles still need to be overcome if Sheffield Hallam University Print Services is to reap the full benefits the software solution can provide.Valuable lessons have been learnt, and new opportunities are presenting themselves as the department responds to changes in its target market. Chair: Janine Barraclough

1240 - 1355 Sun Lounge (Palm Court) Lunch & Exhibition

A finger buffet lunch in the Sun Lounge gives you a second opportunity to visit the exhibitors in the Palm Court next door and to collect stickers for your Grand Raffle card.

Regency Suite 1400 - 1440 Session 4: “Building a sustainable digital university” (members only)

Robert Lane Digital Document Services Director

Arizona State University

In 1978 Arizona State University opened a one-man typewriter repair service. From that humble beginning its document output equipment and services

programs grew to encompass equipment acquisition and maintenance, copy centers, in-plant printing and print-buying operations. After two decades of

steady growth, an administrative decision threatened to destroy the program.

Challenged to find a solution, the director envisioned an innovative concept for a strategic alliance partnership to create, develop, implement and nurture a

synergistic business, educational and technological model. By aligning itself with a global leader in imaging communications and document workflow management, ASU could achieve sustainability and accomplish its goals and vision to meet the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet

their needs.

This session reviews the growth and transformation of the programs, the strategy to “save the business by selling the business” and the successes and

failures in laying the foundation on which to build the Sustainable Digital University™.

0700 - 0900 Regatta Restaurant Breakfast Served from 0700 with the first conference session beginning at 0915

0915 - 1000 Regency Suite Session 7: “Managing Talent” (part 1) Tony Manning Human Capital Leader, I&IM, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP

How do we create long-term career paths to help establish and retain key employees? How can we improve individual employee performance and track and measure performance over time? How can we align individual, team and organisational goals to create a culture where everybody understands how their day-to-day performance impacts the organisation’s goals? Some organisations have begun to integrate the processes of these functional silos into a unified cohesive overall strategy to maximize the return on investment in the organisation’s human assets. This “integrated strategy” is called Talent Management. Talent management is a strategic integrated approach to managing our people throughout the career cycle: attracting, retaining, developing and transitioning the organisation’s human assets. Talent Management is the end-to-end process of planning, recruiting, developing, managing, and compensating employees throughout the organization. The 4 “pillars” of talent management are: recruiting, performance management, learning management, and compensation management. These sessions look at how we can strategically start to manage our talent.

Sarah Gibbon

1005 - 1040 Sun Lounge (Palm Court) Coffee & Exhibition A fourth chance to visit the exhibitors. Please make their attendance and support of our conference worthwhile. Don’t forget to have a look at the entries for the Design and Print Awards.
