I am very pleased to be starting my first year as principal of Howe Sound Secondary. I feel privileged to be transitioning to HSS with the Grade 10's from Don Ross Second- ary and look forward to re- connecting with our Grade 11 and 12 students whom I already know from my years at DRSS. There will be a myriad of tasks and responsibilities that I will need to attend to as I enter this new posi- tion, but two are foremost in my mind. The first is getting to know all of the students new to HSS includ- ing our international students and making them feel a part of our school community. My other priority will be to familiarize myself of the various programs offered here at Howe Sound Secondary. I had the opportunity to meet with the majority of staff on an individual and group basis in June and was impressed by the number of pro- grams offered at HSS in order to meet the many interests of the stu- dents whether they be academic, vocational or a combination of both. The staff also gave me a good sense of what is working and what needs to be improved upon as we enter the 2015-16 school year, and I am looking forward to working collaboratively with staff to build upon the programs and structures already in place. Please drop into our school for a tour of our facility if you are in the vicinity, and feel free to call me at any time if you have questions or concerns. Success in school hap- pens when the school, the student and the parents work collectively together. You also are most wel- come to attend our monthly PAC meetings, the first of which is scheduled for Sept. 15 th at 7:00pm. Please note that we are also hosting an evening for par- ents new to HSS on the same date. I look forward to September, and I trust students, staff and parents are ready for the challenges and opportunities that will unfold in the new year. GUIDELINES FOR COURSE CHANGES Students may discuss course changes with their counsellor within the first two weeks of each semester. If a Grade 12 student wishes to drop a course after the second week, the following procedure will be required: The parent(s) should be advised and be in agreement with their child's wish to drop a course. The student should then discuss dropping the course with the teacher instructing the course. Instances in which a request to drop a course is brought forward well into the semester, the student must meet with the Prin-cipal to have his/her request approved. Students in grades 10 - 11 will NOT be permitted to drop courses. Grade 12 students granted permission to withdraw from a course, will not be allowed to have a study block in place of the dropped course. Rather they will be required to take an on line course through Distance Learning. Grade 12 students should be aware that to be eligible for Honour Roll they must have a minimum of 6 different courses from HSS. To be eligible for Passport to Education Grade 12’s must have a minimum of 5 different courses from HSS and/or Dis-tance Learning.

ATTENDANCE ON QUIZ, EXAM, OR TEST DAYS It is expected that all students will be present for any quizzes, exams, or tests. However, if a student is unable to attend, a note or phone call from the student's parent/guardian must be received on the day of the test/quiz/exam and deemed valid by the teacher. In this instance a make-up test/quiz/exam may be allowed and the student should be prepared to write the test /quiz/exam upon their return to school at a time that is convenient to the teacher. If a student knows he/she is going to be away on the day of a test/quiz/exam for legitimate reasons, he/she should make ar-rangements to write the test/quiz exam ahead of time or at a time selected by the teacher. If students do not meet these conditions, they may receive a zero on the test.

ATTENDANCE POLICY At Howe Sound Secondary, we believe that regular attendance and punctuality is fundamentally important. To increase the probability that students will succeed, we expect our students to abide by the following: * attend 100% of the time except for illness or emergency. An absence can only be excused by a parent or guardian. * arrive at classes on-time, prepared to learn. Students should not request permission to leave classes except for illness, or in an emergency situation. Where possible, appointments should be scheduled outside of school hours. * remain in their classes for the first 15 minutes and last 15 minutes of each block. * have parents/guardians inform the school in advance by telephone, 604-892-5261, or in writing, when late, or when absent. * discuss any absence with teachers. Missed work and assignments are the responsibility of the student. Make-up opportunities may be provided at the teacher’s discretion. It is the responsibility of the student to make arrangements with their teachers for missed time and/or work. * sign out at the office if required to leave during the school day. We expect the parent/guardian’s written permission for early dismissal. In cases where written permission is not provided the office staff will phone to obtain verbal permission from the parent/guardian. Please note that if lates and absences become habitual, a parent/guardian will be notified in writing. Should this pattern con-tinue, a meeting involving the student, parents and school administration may be arranged to address the matter. During breaks, students are expected to remain on campus due to short transition times, as there is not enough time to get coffee off campus. During Instructional time, students are expected to be engaged in learning in their classes. Students are not permitted to loiter in the MPR or in the hallways.
