VOLUME IX, NUMBER 4 MAY 2005 ASSOCIATES/SISTERS DAY TO FOCUS ON EUCHARIST by Sister Marietta Wethington, OSU “Saint Angela and the Eucharist” will be the focus of the 2005 Associates/Sisters Day on Saturday, July 9. Brochures outlining the day have been mailed to all associates. If you haven’t received one, please let us know and we will send you one! Last October Pope John Paul II declared this the year of the Eucharist. In her Rule, Angela urges her daughters to “go to Mass every day…a communion in the spirit.” To help us reflect more deeply on the meaning of the Eucharist in our life as followers of Angela, and to increase our love and appreciation of the gift of the Holy Eucharist, we have invited Sister Margaret Ann Hagan, an Ursuline from Louisville, and our own Mount Saint Joseph Ursuline Sister Rita Klarer to facilitate the day for us. Both presenters are well qualified to lead us in our reflections. Sister Margaret Ann is director of the Ursuline Society and is engaged in spiritual direction and retreat ministry. Prior to this ministry she has been a teacher and pastoral minister, and she has served in leadership for her community. Sister Rita Klarer has enjoyed a myriad of ministries, including teaching math and physics and serving as director of the Greater Nebraska Science and Engineering Fair. She has been director of social services at a jail and chaplain at Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City. Currently she is pastoral minister at St. Patrick Parish, Kansas City. Rita’s presentations are delightful and always hold for us an element of surprise. This is a day you don’t want to miss. The day will have a nice balance of input from our presenters, quiet prayer and reflection, and group sharing and discussion. One of the best parts of the day is the opportunity to visit old friends — both sisters and associates — and to meet new friends. If you have not registered for the day and would like to attend, you may call the Office of Ursuline Partnerships at (270) 229- 2006. At this time, overnight accommodations are at a premium. If there is no room at the Mount, some of the sisters who live in Owensboro have extra rooms and will be glad to accommodate those who would like to stay with them. There is no charge for any part of the day. You, our associates, are important to us and we want you to always feel welcome among us. Please join us on July 9 to pray, to play, to socialize, and to build community. The day will end with Sunday liturgy in the motherhouse chapel at 4 p.m. SAINT ANGELA AND THE EUCHARIST Sister Margaret Ann Hagan, OSU Sister Rita Klarer, OSU Associates/Sisters Day 2005 Saturday, July 9, 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. All associates and sisters are invited to come and share this special day!

April 19-21 found about 50 enthusiastic lay persons and sisters gathered at Mount Saint Joseph Conference and

Retreat Center to consider together their common values as support staff for the communities of the Ursuline Society. These were associate directors, health care administrators, mission advancement/mission effectiveness/developmentdirectors, motherhouse administrators/coordinators,property managers, human resource personnel, andadministrative assistants serving in these Ursulinecommunities.

Facilitator Sister Margaret Ann Hagan — UrsulineSociety coordinator, led the group in naming theirshared values and planning steps to carry out thosevalues. During one exercise, the participants declaredtheir support of one another and recognized those wholaid the foundations of their communities in whosefootsteps they walk. Together they placed bricks in apattern symbolizing the foundation of a new entity.During the closing prayer on Thursday, they plantedsunflower seeds and entrusted the growth of theUrsuline Society to God.

The Ursuline Society, comprises the nineautonomous Ursuline communities of Belleville, Illinois; Paola, Kansas: Brown County, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Toledo, and Youngstown, Ohio; and Louisville and Maple Mount, Kentucky. Members of these communities have been meetingtogether since 1992. After declaring their intention “to move beyond collaboration toward integration” in 2002, thecommunities have made efforts to involve their entire membership in this process. In December 2004, associatedirectors in each of the communities were invited to meet together in Paola. (See cover story in the February issue ofUpdate.) The April meeting of suppport staff continued the spirit of integration on a broader level.

FOR FELLOWSHIP AND WORSHIP

On April 9, 15 Radcliff area associates gathered at St. Christopher Church. They began with a prayer serviceon the Easter Season: “He Is Risen.” Then followed a poignant discussion on the funeral of Pope John Paul II.All agreed the ceremony was a beautiful credit to the Catholic Church with all its pageantry, sacredness, andawesomeness, enhanced by the Gregorian chant that took us back to our early childhood. The splendor and beautylifted our spirits to the Lord.

All enjoyed a videotape presentation by Father Michael Himes, “The Mystery of Faith: An Introduction toCatholicism,” followed by a lively andinformative discussion.

Audrey Durbin, the April winner of the Quiltof the Month Club, proudly displayed her lovelyquilt. There were many “ahhs” over the beautyof the quilting by Sister Jean Madeline Peakeand the cross-stitches by Sister CatherineMarie Lauterwasser.

We don’t have a photo of the April 9 meeting, but we do have one of Feb 26, also at St.Christopher Church.

How can it be time to think about the greatMSJ Picnic? This is an early call for those of youwith green thumbs (or a friend at the plant store)to nurture pretty, saleable plants for the plantbooth. Begin now to find “pretty pots” to makeour plant donations even more appealing.

In our evaluation meetings following Picnic2004, the greatest need expressed was, “Weneed more volunteers.” Won’t you considerjoining the sisters, associates and other faithfulhelpers for a day (or several days!) of hard workand fun? Last year, with good weather and manywilling hands, 5000 people came to enjoyMount Saint Joseph food, games, and hospitality.

Mark your calendar now for September 11,2005, to support our retired sisters, and plan tojoin us. You’ll be most welcome!
