4 UPDATE 10/11

SUMMER PARTY 2011

After a delicious al fresco BBQ, it was time for the much-anticipated PlayStong catwalk show, which was based on the 2011 Color Zoom trend. The Hurlingham Club had been decked out with a PlayStrong theme, complete with chess pieces and black, red and white seating. The high-octane show showcased visual contrasts of black, white and red, and models moved around the chequer-board stage to give the illusion of a theatrical chess-game brought to life. An amazing contortionist performed with a dancetroop to create the fantasy, concluding with a stunning 7-foot tall transvestite model (the queen), with a huge brunette and red afro, to end the show in spectacular style!

Models were styled by Goldwell Ambassadors Michael Barnes, Shane Bennett,Beverly C, Mark Leeson and Lisa Whiteman. Last year’s Global Color Zoom Winner (Creative Colorist Category) Neil Barton, from Neil Barton Salon in Edinburgh, also created a key look and was interviewed on stage to share his experience of winning last year’s competition.

800 guests attended and over £2,000 was raised for Great Ormond Street’s HairRaising appeal, the biggest Goldwell Summer Party yet!

Guests, including Goldwell customers, press and industry friends were greeted with sunshine, music, Pimms and the beautiful outdoor surroundings of the Hurlingham Club. As people mingled in the wooded scenery, the 15 UK Color Zoom finalists were eager to find out who had won.

The Hurlingham Club in London played host to the Goldwell Summer Party to celebrate and announce the UK Color Zoom Winners.

Page 5: Update Magazine | October 2011

UPDATE 10/11 5

To celebrate in style, singer and reality TV star Stacey Solomon took to the stage and got the audience up on their feet and dancing, she even posed with guests after her set and handed out autographs. Mega-DJ Brandon Block then rocked the decks to get the dance floor pumping into the early hours with his high-energy mixes.

Meanwhile, in the specially created KMS California room, guests were invited into the KMS photo booth, complete with wind-machine and wacky dress-up props, to snap a memento of the evening. This chilled-out sanctuary offered cocktails, sofas and a sneaky peek of the new KMS California.

The disturbances in London that evening weren’t going to stop this being the biggest and best Goldwell party yet! With 800 plus guests and a dance floor with enough energy to raise a roof…how will Goldwell top it? Well, you’ll have to come along next year to find out!

6 UPDATE 10/11

For the fourth year, Goldwell collaborated with The London College of Fashion for an exciting research project, setting a challenge to the students to source contemporary concepts that link Goldwell with new fashion tones, target markets and experimental ideas. Students from BA (Hons) Fashion: Styling & Photography, BA (Hons) Fashion: Hair & Make Up and BA (Hons) Hair & Make Up for TV were divided into 6 groups and given a theme to interpret – this year it was the Color Zoom trend of “PlayStrong”.

The 6 groups had to research and resource ideas, develop their concepts with story-boards and bring it into reality with a photo shoot and short video.

“Interesting collaborations, real research on colour and character detail, fabulous cultural referencing; Communicating keynote signs, trend drivers, style factors expertly “online” and “offline”, taking on different roles for a testing industry as well as film work, photography and styling. I’m still bumping in to students who tell me it’s one of their most challenging and fun projects!” Maggie Norden, Director of Creative Media, London College of Fashion

UPDATE 10/11 7

“The joint Goldwell and LCF project evolves every year and has become a very important part of our brand strategy. The quality of work and level of imagination is incredibly high.”Nick Wood, Managing Director UK, Goldwell

“This is an association we are very proud of. The PlayStrong theme was a strong thread to interpret throughout the whole project. I particu-larly liked the story behind the Cougar Couple, Natural Quirk and iGirl – all very different, but totally relevant in 2011.” Sarah Clohessy, Marketing Director UK, Goldwell

See the video at facebook.com/GoldwellUK

Gender Liberation: Separate yet together; entangled identity with a trompe l’oeil twist. The parting and combing of locks has 2011 texturality, coupling the

brunette waves with a blurred artistry. Cougar Couple: New Feminist? New Softer Masculinity? What lies behind the ‘cougar couple’ for 2011? Recognising

the ever-growing status of earning, this story flirts with both womenomics and empowerment; now both sexes play it strong and have experimented in a

different palette of colour. Exotic Hybrids: Taking a cultural mapping route, these models share London’s multi-colourful, multi-cultural dynamic. They are

travellers with global connections, considering their home-grown ethnicity, now regularly networked in geo-location navigation. Dance of Colour: Unlocking

summer’s colour blocking, linking research sources from art history, this muted muse translates a contemporary graphic into Matisse’s original painting.

iGirl: This techno girl has hair as her weapon and is multi-dimensional. A player in her own interactive zone, enjoying living offline and online simultaneously.

Natural Quirk: This plays to unconventional beauty. The unique quality of grey, the empowerment of red head. Natural quirkiness, reality casting, let your

story be told with new rooted playfulness. Original and ongoing.

8 UPDATE 10/11

What has changed for Neil Barton since winning Color Zoom?

Winning Color Zoom was a dream come true for the team and myself. I have felt my confidence soar since winning, it’s incredible for your work to be recognised in such a way. It’s given me confidence to believe in my creative ideas and to follow them through to the end result.

It’s also given the team a boost as they were involved in the whole process, watching me put together the initial ideas which then won the UK’s Color Zoom prize, and the ultimate prize in Paris. They have been very supportive and encouraged me all the way. Our clients have also been excited as the team talk about what we are up to – they love the fact we have won such a prestigious prize.

What has been the best experience since winning?

The whole experience has been amazing, opening doors to opportunities that I may have not otherwise had the chance to do. I am now looking forward to going to Miami to present at 2011’s Color Zoom which will be fantastic.

What advice would you give to next year’s entrants?

The best advice I can give is for entrants to work well in advance of the deadline, be very organized with the shoot so on the day you have a clear mind to create your vision. Make a moodboard for your inspiration so you can relate your ideas to the rest of the shoot team involved on the day.

Are you proud of the new collection?

The new collection is looking great and I can’t wait for everyone to see it. It was brilliant to work with the International Color Zoom Creative Team, bringing ideas and inspirations together to make the collection.

Will you be encouraging your team members to enter Color Zoom?

Yes, it’s very important for the team to have their own goals to work towards as well as support the salon as a whole. From a personal experience, it was such a great competition to enter as it gives you so much confidence in the work you do.

What does the future hold for Neil Barton?

This year I am going to Miami to present at Color Zoom 2011 which is very exciting. I will be off to London for the British Hairdressing Awards in November as I am a finalist for Scottish Hairdresser of the Year. Next year will be busy too as I am starting to teach a series of cutting and colouring courses for Goldwell which will be a new experience for me. For the salon, we are looking at opening the second Neil Barton Hairdressing in Edinburgh so we have lots happening!

Winning FormulaNeil Barton, Creative Colourist Global Winner of Color Zoom 2010, was the first UK hairdresser to win at the International finals, which were held in Paris last year. For the past 9 months he has been travelling between Edinburgh and Germany, working on the new Color Zoom Collection for 2012, which will be revealed at the International Final in Miami this October. One year since winning Neil shares his experiences, and the highs of becoming a globally recognised talent.

TOP TIP: Share your Color Zoom photo shoot with your team, allocating one look per person. Not only does this save costs, it generates more high-quality Color Zoom entries for your salon. Try to ensure the images work as a collection to maximize the shoot’s PR potential.

On Monday 8th August KMS California hosted their first ever Blogger Exclusive Press Event in the UK. As blogs become increasingly influential, the time was right to share the KMS re-launch with these directional and exciting online voices. Blog is simply short for Weblog, an online journal of thoughts, ideas, reviews, anything! KMS targeted beauty specific bloggers with a regular following.

Many beauty bloggers are ex-beauty writers and editors, many are everyday people with day jobs who are passionate about beauty and choose to voice their thoughts via a blog. The best bloggers have loyal followings, people who log onto their blogs to find out about the latest hot products – and they are incredibly important with the power potential to make or break a brand!

KMS California invited 16 key beauty bloggers to the Hurlingham Club to give them a sneak peek of the new-look range and give them exclusive access to all the launch information before anyone else. Guests were treated to KMS-themed cocktails before the preview presentation began. Afterwards they were invited to have their hair done by KMS UK Art Team members Hayley Welling from Ciente, and Ahkeem Yussuf from Elements, who demonstrated how the new products work, in particular the FREESHAPE hot flex spray which all of the bloggers found intriguing.

The event was an overwhelming success, with bloggers writing great reviews of new KMS California before it had even launched!

Here’s just a few blogger comments:

“ To style my hair I used the KMS California FREESHAPE hot flex spray that not only maintains your style and protects against heat damage, but also helps you restyle your hair without adding any extra product.” Natayla http://Filthygorgeousmakeup.blogspot.com

“ I’ve got high hopes for the KMS products.” Stacey http://HQofBeauty.blogspot.com

“ exciting news that KMS California is being ‘re-loaded’, i.e. re-launched, and the new identity is pretty hot stuff.” Hayley http://Londonbeautyqueen.com

“ interesting new products which piqued my interest as well as exciting new subline called FREESHAPE.” May http://Maylovesmakeup.com

“ As diehard fans of KMS (Charleen’s fave is the anti-humidity spray and mine is HAIRPLAY makeover spray) we were super excited to see what’s next re: its social media strategy.” Charisse, SoObsessed Network

Do you know if your salon has been blogged about? Do you know any beauty bloggers from your local area? Have you checked reviews about your salon online? It’s time to get connected and find out what people are saying.

Top Tips• Always respond to a review, good or bad.

This shows that you care and that you have a voice. Be polite and professional at all times.

• If you have a website or online shop, link any reviews back to your site for great PR, and increased traffic.

• Never expect a review in return for a freebie. Bloggers are special because they have an opinion, not because they can be bought. If you get a great review, fantastic … they like you!

• Give bloggers information that they can use immediately. Images on a disk, top tips that they can blog about, a product to try, relevant photos.

• Research the content of blogs before contacting the blogger. Get to know it a little so that you know what you are talking about

• Have something interesting to talk about: a new service, an innovative idea, a salon opening … and be prepared to offer a complementary service.

14 UPDATE 10/11

Following the dramatic style makeover, KMS embarked on a live Reloaded Tour across the UK to showcase their new look. The KMS California hairdresser-exclusive tour ran for two weeks from 23 August – 1 September covering nine venues: Portsmouth, Maidstone, Coventry, Manchester, Ipswich, London, Glasgow, Cardiff and Newmarket. It was a huge success and informed over 500 salon owners of KMS California’s exciting future and new philosophy; REAL LIVES, REAL PEOPLE, YOUR STYLE.

The tour began with an inspirational presentation given by KMS Global Programs Manager, Alan Earnshaw. Alan has worked with KMS California for 28 years and has played an integral role in the evolution of the brand - from the bottles displaying molecules in the 80’s to the now fashion-forward colourful packaging. Mitch Lucas, UK Sales Director of KMS California and Erin Sanders, UK Brand Manager of KMS California both accompanied Alan to provide the exciting and motivating presentations.

The event began with a brief history of KMS California and the rationale behind the new brand identity. Participants were then introduced to the new eye-catching range, with “ooh’s” and “ahs” signifying that KMS had got their attention. The audience also received an intuitive talk on social media and the benefits for salons and stylists.

Alan stated “For the past four years we have been testing and improving all of our products, we were determined to hit the market with a magnificent new range and I firmly believe we have achieved this. The new look KMS is current and on trend. It has so many amazing hero products, such as FREESHAPE quick blow dry that reduces drying time by up to 50%, essential for any busy salon and client”.

The audience was introduced to KMS California’s START:STYLE:FINISH concept, meaning every style starts with the perfect shampoo. Attendees were also spoilt with KMS cupcakes, biscuits and a KMS goodie bag!

Retailing Tips

Jon McLeod, Creative Director Paterson SA

Make sure you attract the attention of this year’s seasonal spenders by making the most of your windows. Major retailers have long known the value of their window displays, and many are famous for their creative designs. Take Harrods for example, they have recently allowed fashion powerhouse, Chanel, to take over every window for a special tribute to the french designer – which not only looks amazing (check it out online at www.harrods.com) but has ensured both Harrods and Chanel endless column inches leading into the new season.

So, using your windows to their full potential can be great for PR, great for your image andgreat for your profits! Here are a few window

‘tis the season to spend, spend, spend

displays that have captured my imagination

over the last few weeks, I love these exam-

ples. Let them inspire you to create something

truly exciting, eye-catching and desirable

this season, and watch those shoppers stroll

into your salon…. Samantha Field, PR

The principle foundation in being a successful retail salon is never to sell a thing. Each member of the team should provide maximum information on the products being applied, which allows the client to make an educated and informed choice when purchasing products.

Allow your team to have direct involvement with the product selection rather than them just being given a product to retail. This encourages motivation and retailing enthusiasm throughout the team as a whole.

Our philosophy at PSA is that retailing equals professionalism. The greatest incentive to our team is achieving high retail sales, and those team members who achieve the highest sales are seen as the top professionals within the company.

The team were challenged to come up with an idea that encompassed the philosophy behind the new KMS: “REAL LIVES. REAL PEOPLE. YOUR STYLE.” The concept of this shoot evolved from the image of a woman in bright clothing standing in the corner of an androgynous room.

The shoot takes place in an anonymous room (shot on location in a residential house, Queens Park, London) which is given personality by themodel who appears in it, creating a real situation

in the viewers imagination. It is impossible to tell where the room is, it is up to the viewer to make up their own mind by imagining where the model may be going or coming from.

The focus is beautiful hair, hair which often contradicts the clothing. There is no boundary to your style, expect the unexpected, everyone is unique and interesting. It reflects the personality of the KMS UK Art Team, in their own words, eclectic, soulful, confident and opinionated.

Every shot has its own personality while working as a collection. Only four models were used for this shoot, but it appears as if there were more.

Styling incorporates vivid brights with plenty of clash. There is a variety of texture to offer a range of luxe, through to street styles.
