We have reached our goal for the community-funded portion of the

clubhouse solar panel project!

Pledges are still coming in, and that is absolutely okay! All pledges received will help the grant application process by demonstrating the community’s support for this project and commitment to a sustainable future. After we are awarded grant funding, we will then begin the process of collecting pledged funds from the community and kickoff the solar panel installation phase. If you still want to show your support for solar power at the clubhouse please continue to send in your pledges!

The Solar Committee has continued to submit applications for grant funding. We are focusing our efforts on local grant organizations with clear sustainability goals. To date we have submitted four applications and have been turned down by two. In past weeks we have received counsel from Indianolans who have some past grant application experience. Eric Cookson, and Mary McCluskey both have experience with grant writing for public funds grants and have provided key insight into the public grant process. Applying for public funding will complement our efforts that had been focused on private grants, and will increase our overall likelihood of success.

In coming months we will be planning a community meeting to celebrate our reaching the pledge goal, and to provide updates on the grant process and the next steps for clubhouse solar power.

Remember, if you still have your pledge form around and would like to pledge, please do so. Every new pledge adds strength to our grant applications. Money is not needed right now - just place the filled out forms in the clubhouse lock box or mail them to IBIC PO Box 212 Indianola WA 98342. Pledge funds will be collected after we secure grant funding.

New Pledgees this month include:Stu and Marci Allen, Linda Brandt and Rob Sprague, Leslie Newman and Tim Celeski, Tim and Lisa Gregg, Richard and Betty Hendreen, Stephanie Kerns, Roger and Barbara MacDonald, Don and Gael Owen, Mark Roden, Robin Schmidt, Drace Springborn, Lynn Sudduth, Susan Sweetwater, Don and Maureen Todd, and Angie and Kurt Van Wyck.

We are so encouraged by all of you who have shown your support for helping the IBIC Clubhouse become more sustainable.

Thank you to all of you, for helping us to reach this goal!

PleasejoinusforIndianolaBeachClean-UpSaturday,April20that11:30AM

Calling all beach lovers! Come help us clean up our beach!

We will meet at the head of the Indianola Dock. Low tide is at 12:26pm. Last year we had enough volunteers to walk the beach from Enschede stairs to the Indianola Beach Preserve. We split up to cover segments of the beach with drop off points at four accesses: the Enschede stairs, the Dock, the Western Avenue boat

ramp, and the Indianola Beach Preserve.

We will dispose of the recyclables at the Clubhouse bin and take garbage to the Hansville landfill. If you have a pick-up truck and can collect debris from the access points about noon, that would be terrific. There will be no charge to the community for dumping the garbage or for supplies. The Kitsap County Public Works Solid

Waste Division is providing this support.

We will provide gloves, and plastic bags for garbage and recyclables. Tires, glass, Styrofoam, netting and the variety of colorful plastics will all be picked up.

Please contact Pam Dassel (360-297-2238) if you can offer a truck on that morning.

Students can receive community service hours for participating. We will have forms available.

Earth Day 2019

Downpour will donate $1 to Stillwaters for every Pint Sold! Between pints & slices, and Earth Day ideas, come celebrate the end of a manic Monday with your local peeps! Early Giving will be in full effect...we'll make it easy to go online

and submit a Great Give donation for Earth Day as you sip. Come for the fun, though, and take home a little tree.

A note to our Breeze Advertisers - It is time to start thinking about how you want your next ad to look. In May, we will send out your renewal notices and we need those back by the end of June. The new ad pages will be formatted in July and begin running in August. They run in ten editions over 12 months.

For more information about advertising in the Breeze, see our flyer on the IBIC’s Facebook page or email us at [email protected].

At the 2018 Repair Cafe, residents needing repairs got help from residents with the skills and tools to make the needed repairs. This year’s Cafe promises to be even bigger and better, so come join us, May 4th. Start sorting now, so you have things ready when the big day arrives.

Neighbors,

We have a lot happening this Spring. We are beyond excited about our town emergency preparedness program titles “Indianola Ready”. There will be a booth with more information at the Repair Café May 4th. Map Your Neighborhood is a major part of the efforts and we would love to get as many people involved as possible.

A big thank you to all of our Solar Panel pledges. We are so happy to report we have exceeded our goal of $20,000! It is fantastic to see all the support from neighbors.

Now is your chance to join the Board of Trustees. In August we will be filling four slots for outgoing trustees. Please consider becoming a trustee if you have time. It is a rewarding undertaking that really makes you appreciate our community for all it offers.

Respectfully, Emily Reckord Young, IBIC President

Indianola Ready - April 2019Submitted by Dave Mcilvena

Map Your NeighborhoodIndianola neighborhoods have already kicked off their own Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) efforts! At least four neighborhood groups have started meetups and shared information to help themselves be better prepared in the event of an emergency. The MYN program focuses on organizing for disaster preparedness with your closest group of neighbors and is a great excuse to connect with Indianolans closest to home. One of our neighborhood captains has reported that their group will be hosting a potluck quarterly to refresh their planning and to reconnect with each other. This is the essence of emergency preparedness in Indianola: community connection.

Indianola Ready has set a goal to prepare every neighborhood in town. Right now we have a few blocks covered on the map, and many more to go. We are looking for neighborhood captains who will be in charge of their own neighborhood’s preparedness planning. Captains will initiate neighborhood meetups and preparedness planning, and facilitate communication between their neighborhood and Indianola Ready. If this sounds like something you’re interested in, get in touch and we will help provide the info you need to get started.

Upcoming Events May 4: Repair Cafe and August 3: Indianola DaysWe will have a table set up at each. Come meet the group and pickup some materials to help you get started in your household and neighborhood. Sign up to be a neighborhood captain, or to volunteer your skills or services. We will have a map on hand for all to mark their neighborhoods, and will help you get a plan in place to start preparing.

September 8: Emergency Preparedness Kickoff EventGuest speakers from Bainbridge Prepares, North Kitsap Fire Rescue, and Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management. We will have tables set up with all the information you need to start improving your readiness for emergencies. Come to learn about why we need to be prepared, and how to begin. Find out more about getting involved in any aspect of community disaster preparedness including family reunification, communication, care for the elderly and those with special needs, pet care, wellness, and much more.

Indianola Ready is Indianola’s emergency preparedness organization. We hold monthly meetings and are looking for community volunteers. If you would like to get involved, please contact us at [email protected]. Plan now. Work together. Be ready.

The Indianola Almanac

Submitted by Kathy Dickerson

Scattered showers, sun breaks and occasional hail are normal for this time of year. We are ahead of the typical April rainfall so far. The monthly average is 2.71 inches and by the 10th we had more than 1.6 inches. March and January were drier than normal. The water year measured from October through April is a little more than two inches below the normal average.

The full moon is April 19, called the Pink Moon for all the lovely trees in bloom this month. Blooming alder, cedar and maple are causing allergy sufferers some problems. But the good news is that we have longer daylight. We gain an extra one and three quarters hours by the end of the month.

On April 23, Jupiter will be three degrees to the lower left of the waning gibbous moon. To measure the distance between objects in the sky, you can use your outstretched arm and hand. Your fist is about ten degrees, a finger is one degree. So Jupiter will be three fingers to the lower left of the moon. Another term to know is gibbous, which means a planet or moon that is more than fifty per cent illuminated. On April 25, the last quarter of the moon will be less than three degrees (or fingers) to the right of yellowish Saturn.

I faithfully tap the barometer every day. What am I getting from this measurement? I generally know if the marker goes lower, the weather is cloudy or stormy. If it goes to a higher number, it generally means clear skies. The barometer measures the air pressure in our atmosphere. Atmosphere is layers of air wrapped around the earth. The air has weight and presses against

everything it touches as gravity pulls it to earth. The barometer measures this pressure. For instance, a rapid drop in air pressure means that a low pressure system is arriving. Low pressure means there isn’t enough force or pressure to push clouds or storms away. Walking the dock this month, there are many courting displays going on among the birds. A great show to watch was the pigeon guillemots as they circled around each other, showing a sexy flash of red leg and giving twittering beak kisses. The interior of their mouths is as red as their legs and feet. These black birds with a white wing patch nest in the cliffs beyond the point. They use the same site for years. Guillemots are monogamous, except for an occasional divorce. This means seeking out a new nesting site. One or two eggs are brooded for a month. The chicks fledge in about a month to six weeks. Both parents feed small fish to the chicks. These birds are amazing divers. They literally fly underwater. Their stubby wings propel them as deep as 160 feet to the sea bottom. Their feet are used mostly for steering and propulsion. They feed on small octopus, mollusks, and bottom fish such as sculpin and gunnels. They can be seen at the surface, swimming along with their heads submerged. Guillemots have been recorded traveling 246 feet horizontally on dives.

A dock walker stopped to throw bread around, I assumed for the birds. Please do not feed ducks bread. It has little nutritional value. If they fill up on white bread, they are not getting the nutrition they need. Waterfowl can develop a condition known as angel wing. This deformity can prevent them from flying. Better to feed them greens. The best use for kale that I know of.

A gush of bird-song, a patter of dew, A cloud, and a rainbow's warning, Suddenly sunshine and perfect blue-- An April day in the morning.

~Harriet Prescott Spofford

The beginning balance for the Money Market Plus fund this month was $126,792 ending as $125,019. The total in both accounts for this month is $167,298. Bob shared the year budget from 2018 with the estimates for 2019 adjusting the proposed budget for 2019 to be $102,591. A short discussion was followed by a motion and second to approve the budget as proposed by Bob. The proposed budget was approved unanimously by the Board. B. C. Merchandise: Madison reported that no one submitted new designs for the merchandise to be printed in 2019. She submitted her designs; one for shirts and possible hats and one for other items. She also mentioned that she may have either the crab design or the heron design of past designs also printed. Sales are down at this time, which follows the typical yearly pattern. Bob Kernaghan requested that more people help in the store and Catherine indicated she had a list of volunteers from the community willing to help that she could pass along. D. G. Adult & Children Activities: Emily reported the Easter Egg Hunt will be on April 20. H. IBIC Generations: Kayleen reported that as of this evening we have $18, 720 in pledges toward our $20,000 goal and will be inserting a green form in the Breeze for the last time this month. Other forms will remain in the post office, at the store and on the clubhouse porch until our goal is reached. Our focus is on grant writing now and we will be reaching out to the community for their help in beefing up our grant writing team. Russ Sciandra reported that with the newly approved budget, he can go forward and apply to two more foundations at this time.

IV. Old Business A. Community Preparedness: Emily, for Dave, reported that Michelle Labota is working with a sample of neighborhood groups to begin mapping their neighborhoods for needs and resources. Community Preparedness will manage a booth at the Repair Café on May 4 and then have their fair on September 8 in the clubhouse. B. Bylaw Amendment Proposal: (third reading) Catherine read the revised by-law proposal and called for the Board to approve the newly proposed by-law for the revision of membership dues to be voted on by the community at the annual meeting this August. It was moved seconded and passed that the by-law proposal go forward for a vote in August with a submission of the by-law content in the July Breeze. C. Budget: Bob Kraft outlined four things in the works for future Board considerations; 1) a capital budget 2) post office contract 3) Insurance, which is presently being reviewed by our contact at Sears of Bainbridge and 4) taxes…our taxes can be filed in May, giving us extra time to review these as a Board.

V. New Business A. Big Rock Stairs: Emily and Bob Kernighan reported that the insurance company indicated the stairs are not in need of closing at this time, but repair bids are being taken. The Board passed that no more than $4,000 be spent at this time for repair. One early bid came in for $3,000 giving a ballpark figure for the Board to work with. B. She also reported that the blood drive was very successful. Jerry Richards offered his historic understanding and experience toward a long-term plan for repairing all four of our community beach access stairs. He said this is a constant need and a capital plan would be of help to the revolving door boards. Meeting was adjourned at 8:26 PM

Respectfully Submitted, Kayleen Pritchard, Secretary
