June Newsletter 2017
As the 2016-2017 school year quickly draws to a close we say farewell to our Grade
9 students as they embark upon a new adventure into high school. Many staff mem-
bers will also be moving on to new positions within our school district. This school
year we say farewell to Mrs. MacLeod, Mrs. Stambene, Mrs. Dold, Mrs. McAnally,
Ms. Wuerth, Ms. Cumming, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Ionescu and Mrs. McBeath. It has
been a tremendous joy to work with each of you and we wish you all the best in your new schools. We
thank them for their outstanding service to our school community and know that God will bless them on
their new journeys.
We are pleased to announce the addition of three new staff members,
Mrs. Saunders, Ms. Moscibrodzki, and Mrs. Hobart who will be joining
our St. Joan of Arc School community. We are thrilled to have such
fantastic teachers joining our team for the coming school year.
Staffing within all Calgary Catholic schools continues into mid-June,
therefore we may experience additional changes in the coming
weeks. Once our staff has been confirmed for the 2017-2018 school
year a staff list will be sent in the weekly messenger.
Please see the attached calendar for June noting the important dates of
our Grade 1 Orientation evening, our Year End Liturgy, Kindergarten
Celebration of Learning, Elementary Play Day, JH Activity Day, JH
Awards Celebration, plus numerous other events/activities.
Please join us for our year end school mass held at St. Michael’s church
on June 16, 10:00am
As the current school year comes to a close our staff have already begun preparations for the 2017-2018
year. Our last day of classes this year will be June 29. Our students will be in attendance for the entire
day.
Our first day of classes for the next school year will be September 5, 2017. Prior to the first day of clas-
ses your child will receive a welcome postcard from their teacher. Information will be provided regard-
ing the first day of school. We will follow a similar practice as in previous years whereby classes will
assemble outside. Teachers will have signs posted outside near the entry doors for their class to meet be-
fore the first bell at 8:50am.
All parents are then welcome to stay and join us in the main gym for coffee, meet the new administration
team and participate in a volunteer orientation. This is also a time to reconnect with other parents in the
school community and share highlights of your summer break.
Thank you for a fantastic year of learning together. Thank you to our tremendous parent volunteers and
your hours of dedication to the students of St. Joan of Arc School. Have a safe and fun filled summer
vacation and we look forward to seeing everyone again in September.

Are You Moving?
It is hard to believe but we are already beginning to look at enrollment numbers for the 2017-
2018 school year. We would kindly ask families that are moving out of our school boundary area
to please inform the office. This information will be valuable as we plan for next year.
Class Lists for 2017-2018 School Year
Class lists for the upcoming school year are generated during the months of May and June. It is
important that teachers are able to generate homeroom classes that will ensure optimal learning
for all students. Teachers will be compiling placement lists with the following factors in mind:
gender, academic levels, learning styles, behavior, independence, specialized programming,
friendships etc. Parents are asked to respect the lengthy process in place to ensure optimum
learning environments are created through careful distribution of student learners. Letters from
parents requesting class placements will NOT be accepted. Thank you for your
understanding.
Elementary Play Day
Wednesday June 21, 2017
Play day is coming! Students and staff are busy preparing for a day of fun with a Get Fit for Can-
ada’s 150th theme for our elementary Play Day. Our play day has been planned by staff and stu-
dents with the support of Parent Council. The activity based play day will offer many play sta-
tions for students to travel to with their friends. Stations have been designed to incorporate fun
based physical skills and to encourage active participation. Students are encouraged to complete
all stations, which will be set up in and outside of the school. We are grateful to our Staff Com-
mittee, School Council and our parent volunteers who will help support the running of stations.
The school will provide each student with a free snack and lunch! Play Day will go rain or shine,
but let’s pray for sunshine!
We are encouraging staff, students and volunteers to wear red, white or Canada themed wear.
Grade One Orientation
This year St. Joan of Arc School will again be offering a grade one orientation for any current kin-
dergarten families that may have questions as their child transitions to a full day of school. The
orientation will be held on June 15 at 6:00pm. It will provide information on school entrance pro-
cedures, lunch procedures, special days and fun lunches as well as an overview of the grade one
curriculum. If you are a current kindergarten family and interested in attending this informative
evening please RSVP by calling the school office at 403-500-2107.
Final Progress Reports
St. Joan of Arc School is kindly requesting all parents of children who will be absent on the last
day of classes, Thursday June 29, to send a self-addressed stamped envelope to St. Joan of Arc
School so final Progress Reports can be mailed home.
Please remember that if you send in a 9 x 12 envelope, the postage is $1.80 or 3 stamps.

guests to attend the Year End Awards. More details will be coming home soon!
Grade 9 Farewell
The spiritual theme for our 2016-2017 Grade 9 Farewell is “Mercy – Be merciful, just as your Father is
merciful" (Luke 6:36) Through the blessing of our faith, we will remember that our loving God is always
merciful, ready to forgive us of our trespasses and give us opportunities to begin anew. God is good to all
and his mercy is abundant – never in short supply. Pope Francis tells us, “Mercy will always be greater than
any sin [and] no one can put a limit on the love of the all – forgiving God.” On June 7, 2017 the Grade 9
Farewell will mark the celebration of our grade 9 students as we prepare to send them off to high school.
Students will arrive at the school for a community gathering continental breakfast, followed by a presenta-
tion from a guest speaker. Another special experience awaits as they leave for Jubilations Dinner Theatre for
a buffet lunch and performance of “Ferris Bueller’s School of Rock.” Upon leaving the theatre, students re-
turn to the school for an opportunity to share about the day, after which they will proceed to St. Michael
Church for their Farewell Mass.
On behalf of the teachers, support staff and administration, we bid a farewell to the class of 2017!
1 Timothy 4:12 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the be-
lievers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”
Safety Patrols June 2016-2017
Patrol Training
Our Grade 4 Patrol Trainees have been on duty for almost a month now and are demonstrating a greater
comfort level with the roles and responsibilities involved. Constable Hartmann also completed a successful
training session with all the new grade 4 patrollers. We have also begun to train our new Lieutenants for the
2017 – 2018 school year. We expect that all new patrols should be finished their training by mid-June and a
new Patrol Schedule put into effect at about that time. This schedule will then carry over in September.
Thank you to all patrols and parents for their commitment and flexibility during the training period. Your
support is truly appreciated.
Patrol Appreciation Day Picnic
AMA School Safety Patrol and the Calgary Police Service planned an Appreciation Day Picnic for all the
patrollers in the city. This event will take place on Thursday, June 8th, 2017 at Heritage Park. Thank you to
all parent Volunteers for making this event happen.
Our St. Joan of Arc patrollers volunteer daily to help children get to and from school safely. The time, kind-
ness and responsibility of our patrollers are truly appreciated by all the students and parents at our school and
in our community. It takes special qualities and dedication to step out and stop the traffic in order for stu-
dents and parents to cross the street safely.
To all patrollers at St. Joan of Arc School: “A big thank you for all the hard work that you do!”
In appreciation the school is also providing a pizza lunch on Friday June 2nd starting at 12:10PM.
