In every age in the last 2000+ years, the Church—the people of faith—have found ways to live their faith life, which has been at odds with the culture of the time. Those early years in the life of the Church were challenged by the Roman Empire, the struggle to separate from the Jewish Synagogue, and the numerous gods of various religions. In our day and
age, we have to struggle against the cultural currents of the modern world (and they are too various to catalogue), but several modern Pontiffs and religious leaders have pointed to relativism as the greatest danger. Relativism: all points of view are valid, and truth is what I believe to be the true...there is no actual truth. The Catholic Church has opposed this belief from its very beginnings. Recall that as Pontius Pilate questions Jesus, Jesus replies, “Whoever belongs to the truth listens to me.” Pilate replies, “And what is truth?” Pilate dismissed the possibility of truth and he, like all who question the existence of truth, paid a high price. Even the mighty empire itself unraveled and crumbled and ceased to exist under the existence of relativism and lukewarm faith. We still face the specter of relativism and the Church must present its eternal beliefs and truths to a modern world. There are several methods open to us and one that is supported and approved by the Catholic Bishops of the United States is an experience called Alpha. Here at St. Elizabeth All Seton our staff and commission leaders will begin having the faith affirming experience next month; it runs for 11 weeks. Our aim is to open the Alpha experience for all the parish in September of this year. We will be sharing further information about our Alpha experience with you in the near future. Please keep us in your prayers.

What’s Happening in Religious Education
This past Saturday our Confirmation Candidates, along with a few Youth Group members, gathered with 500 teens from around our diocese for a Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. Our day began at Sacred Heart Parish in Detroit near Eastern Market where we all gathered and stuffed bears for Project Night–Night, which supplies teddy bears local shelters for homeless children. Our service site for the day was Image of God’s Crisis Pregnancy Center at St. Charles Lwanga Parish. The center had recently changed rooms within their building and needed
assistance restocking and organizing their supplies. Below are some photos of our students hard at work.

Question of the Week for Youth It is not always easy to walk away from the things we want to do in order to do what Jesus wants us to do. Jesus asked Peter and Andrew, James and John to drop everything and follow him; that He would make them ‘fishers of
men.’ Jesus is inviting them, first, to learn who He truly is, and second, to draw others to Christ. Perhaps the message for us today is to balance the radical call to be a follower of Jesus with the challenge to be “fishers of men” even within our own families. How are you inviting others to know who Jesus is?

Seniors Meeting
Seniors of the Parish will resume their meetings on Wednesday, January 25th at 9:00 AM in the Social Hall. All seniors of the parish are invited to join us for a continental breakfast and friendship. A video will be shown after the breakfast (it will run about an hour). Come join us!
On Tuesday, February 7th at 7:00 PM, Women’s Fellowship will host ‘Song and Spirit,’ an interfaith organization which sponsors social and charitable outreach programs for the homeless and marginalized in our area. The event will take place in our Social Hall; please join us for this informative presentation.
What is a ‘Gathered Youth Night?’
Every other Sunday night, from 6:00 – 8:30 PM, our high school teens are invited to join us in the Parish Hall for fun, fellowship and food. On these nights we will ‘gather’ as we get to know one another, share a meal, worship together and learn a little bit more about our faith. Each night will have a main topic or ‘theme’ which will be our focus for the evening in small and large groups.
Song and Spirit
The Men’s Fellowship will be sponsoring a fundraising breakfast after all Masses on February 5th to benefit funding for homeless meals in 2017. The breakfast is a free-will offering, and the menu includes a meatless egg casserole, pancakes, sausage, ham, sausage gravy & biscuits, fresh fruit, juices, milk, and coffee. In 2017, the Men’s Fellowship wishes to match their 2016 efforts in serving over 1,025 meals. As one of its key outreach ministries, Men’s Fellowship’s costs in providing these meals covers purchasing the food and supplies, cooking the meals, and serving them (mostly at homeless shelters in Oakland County), all for less than $3.00 apiece. The generosity of the parish is greatly appreciated in this important endeavor. If any man (18 and older) would like to assist with either preparing the breakfast or assisting a homeless meal, please call Jim Moseley at (248) 379-1451 or email at [email protected]. Blessings in 2017, Men’s Fellowship
Men’s Fellowship Fundraiser Breakfast
The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton St. Vincent de Paul conference is collecting new and gently used children’s books. The books can be dropped off in the box in the Social Hall. Collected books will be distributed to children in Pontiac whose families often cannot afford to purchase books for the children to read at home. Since reading is so important for building a good foundation for all academic skills, a small donation can make a big impact.
If you have any questions, please contact: Jerry or Deb Peltier, (248) 641-7955.

Stewardship Thoughts (from the AOD)
In today’s Gospel passage, St. Matthew reflects on Isaiah’s prophesy in the First Reading: The people who walk in
darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. This foreshadows what is accomplished in Christ Jesus. In the Old Testament, the
“land of gloom” is where Israel’s trail to Babylonian captivity began. In this same area, in the fishing village of
Capernaum, Jesus begins His public ministry and calls the first Apostles. As Christian stewards, we know that Jesus is our joy and the “Light of the World” Who dispels darkness. We are called to a personal relationship with the Lord and, in turn, are commissioned in a spirit of evangelization to
share Jesus’ joy and light with all of our brothers and sisters. Many parishes evangelize through processes like Alpha and ChristLife, which give you an opportunity to draw closer to
Christ while professing His Good News of salvation to others.

CSA: Priestly Vocations
Please pray for men discerning a call to the priesthood at this weekend’s discernment weekend at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit. Thanks to your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal, the archdiocesan Office of Priestly Vocations offers these firsthand, up close, and stress-free looks at seminary life several times a year. They include presentations from priests and seminarians, fellowship, and time for prayer. The next discernment weekend, for men who are high school seniors to 55 years old, will be held March 30th to April 2nd. A discernment overnight, for high school freshmen to juniors, will take place on April 7th and 8th. Details about discernment weekends and overnights can be found at detroitpriest.com.

CHRISTMAS GIVING THANK YOUS
From CSSWC (Community of Social Services of Wayne County): Thank you for your generous donation of new toys, clothes and other essential items for the children and families receiving services through CSSWC. Your overwhelming generosity helps to make the holidays brighter for children and families. May God bless you with good health, peace and happiness in the New Year. Thank you again for supporting CSSWC. Very truly yours, Tanya R. Griffith Development & Public Relations Director From CCRT (Catholic Community Response Team): I and the entire volunteer staff of 100 members of the CCRT wish to extend our gratitude to you for your generous Giving Tree donations. We are deeply appreciative of the support provided by St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church as it helps a growing homeless and displaced population in Pontiac. The lines of needy continue to grow, especially during the holiday season and onset of winter weather. Your donation makes an immediate impact on the needs of those clients who fill our hallway each day. During the two-week Christmas to New Year period we served on average a dozen clients each day. Many required emergency food, utility or rent assistance as well as winter clothing. Charitable contributions allow our staff to quickly impact those clients with support during their time of need. We continue to serve those in need and realize the work can only be accomplished by having partners such as the faith family at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Please extend our thanks and appreciation to the entire faith community. We truly appreciate your contribution and support throughout the year. Sincerely, Barbara J. Williams Director

Respect Life will be holding an on-going Baby Shower to benefit Abigayle Ministries, a local crisis pregnancy center. It is not enough that we pray to end abortion, and ask our legislators to pass laws to end abortion. We must help women who are pregnant and scared and believe that they have no other option. Donations of new or gently used baby clothing can be placed in the crib in the Social Hall. Baby food, formula, diapers and other baby necessities are also
welcome. Unfortunately, we cannot accept stuffed animal toys. Thank you in advance for your generous support. Respect Life Committee
Please note… Mass intentions should be arranged two weeks in
advance to appear in the bulletin. Requests for names to be mentioned during the
Prayers of the Faithful or for the bulletin prayer list should be provided by a member of the family.
The Prayer List is updated monthly. If we do not hear from you to keep your person on, we will take him/her off the list. You can always call to put him/her back on.
