VOL 22 ISSUE 5, 27 MAY 2020 Someone to look up to As part of a Friendship Group held last year, there was a session where students could decide who their role models might be. It was an opportunity to research people past and present, and to think about who to choose and why, and what that person stood for. When the students all came back together the next week to share ideas, it was pleasing to see Ashley Barty as one of the role models chosen. Myself being an avid tennis fan, and player of the game for most of my life, this choice was close to my heart. Even so, Ash could have been a champion in a completely different sport, or profession and I would still highly recommend her as someone for young people to look up to. Just one of many examples is how Ash always refers to her team, and not just herself in her press conferences or on court interviews. She always says “we” and never “I”. She knows the reason for her success and she embodies how success is a team effort. Life is a team effort. We cannot survive completely on our own, nor are we designed to. We need people to look up to. Whether it be a loving parent, a grandparent, a special aunt or uncle, a teacher, a Pastor, a celebrity. We learn so much from those around us, both good things and the not so good, but to help us build good character, and to be more like those we admire, it is wise to choose wisely. Jesus is someone we can look up to. He is the ultimate person of good character, the one who lived to serve, share what he had with others, show compassion and to always accept others for who they were – and when it was time, he selflessly followed his Father’s plan, to save his ‘team’ here on earth – God’s people. Fix your eyes on Jesus, for he is worthy of looking up to. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God. Someone to look up to As part of a Friendship Group held last year, there was a session where students could decide who their role models might be.

From the PrincipalIN THIS TOGETHERToday marks the first day of National Reconciliation Week, 2020. A number of events are occurring around the school in the coming week and we look forward to sharing the results with you soon. ‘In this together’, this year’s theme, gives us all call to reflect on our own individual and community parts to play in reconciliation, no matter the size or what we feel our influence could be. This theme resonates in an additional sense now with current events throughout the world. Current events means that we are connecting in different ways, in small communities and globally, and Reconciliation Australia has found many ways for us to connect in this way through Reconciliation Week. You can visit the page below to find ways to celebrate at home in addition to the discussions and activities students will take part in at St Paul.https://nrw.reconciliation.org.au/2020/05/19/20-ways-to-be-in-this-together-in-2020/

From the Deputy PrincipalWith social distancing measures in place around the school for parents, teachers are also doing their best to maintain their routines and practices as safely as possible. Obviously there have not been any Chapel or Assembly gatherings for a few months, but this is also the case for whole school staff gatherings.

Staff devotions: Normally, all staff would meet as a group four mornings a week for prayer and morning notices and one morning a week would be smaller group gatherings for prayer groups. At the moment prayer groups take place twice a week and whole staff devotions are completed over Microsoft Teams, allowing staff to access devotions from offices and classrooms.

Staff meetings: Staff meetings take place either online on Microsoft Teams, or in small groups spread around the school with limited numbers in a space at any given time.

Professional Learning: Week 10 is the first week of holidays for our students but teachers remain onsite for professional learning. We are currently finalising plans to adjust how this program will be delivered to small groups on a workshop/rotation basis.

There are many aspects of ‘normal’ school life that require teachers to be in large groups (yard duties, classrooms) but wherever possible we are minimising these gatherings for the safety of all members of the community.

CARPARKGiven the extra strain on the kiss and drop driveway, we continue to ask for your full support in the morning and afternoon. Two things to consider with this are…

• If parking in the carpark in the afternoon, meeting your child at the bottom of the ramp/deck. Please do not wait until they are in the kiss and drop driveway before leaving the carpark and picking them up there. The flow of traffic relies on cars leaving the carpark and exiting the back gate immediately.

Page 3: Upcoming Events Someone to look up to 27...Check your fruit 2. Collect fallen fruit 3. Keep your fruit on your property- eat, cook or preserve it 4. Allow access to your property for

• In the morning, students are not to leave their car unless they are in the carpark, or in the bottom part of the kiss and drop driveway, past the pedestrian crossing.

Your continued support is appreciated.

3. Keep your fruit on your property- eat, cook or preserve it

4. Allow access to your property for organic baiting

5. Pick your fruit- be a fruit fly fighter

SHED MEN GO ANYWHERE Usually at this time of year we have been promoting the SMGB Camp. SMGB is an event organised exclusively by Dads from St Paul, whereby Dads and their primary school-aged children take off for a weekend of camping and participate in a range of fun-filled scheduled activities that promote quality father-child time. Although SMGB is not an official school event this is a great event to get away with your child.

This year, things are a little bit different, but we are lucky enough in SA to be able to go camping. We’d like to promote Dads and their kids camping over the June long weekend and ask you to post some photos of your camping trip, even if it’s in the backyard. You can tag St Paul in your photos, or email the school office [email protected] with some photos to go in Inspire and on the school Facebook page. Some activities you might like to try are a scavenger hunt, kite making, damper making or even cooking in the kitchen with your child if you’re not able to get away.

We look forward to seeing your adventures.

together, we can reflect on what more we can do to improve Aboriginal inclusion and respect across our school and in the larger community.

Whilst COVID-19 may have brought about some changes to how we participate in Reconciliation Week, the message ‘In This Together’ has never been more relevant. Leila Mattner, Bec Mattner, Hayley Woodward and I were fortunate to be part of the NRW 2020 Virtual Breakfast which also highlighted the impact of the pandemic on the Indigenous Community. We encourage everyone to get involved as Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds, and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

STEPPING IT UP FOR RECONCILATIONIt’s been 20 years since the Corroboree 2000 Bridge Walk, where on Sunday 28th May 2000, more than 250,000 people marched together across the Sydney Harbour Bridge in support of Reconciliation.

The challenge is to walk, run or ride accross the virtual Sydney Harbour Bridge at least once a day for everyday of Reconciliation Week.

National Reconcilation Week27 MAY - 3 JUNE 2020‘National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May – 3 June and is a week for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements and learn about what each of us can do to support the national reconciliation effort.’ This year will mark 20 years since 250,000 Australians walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and bridges in other cities around the country, as a symbol of ‘bridging the gap’ between Indigenous Australians and non-Indigenous Australians.

For the community at St Paul, National Reconciliation Week is a time for students and staff alike to broaden our understanding of what is at the core of reconciliation. Throughout the week, students will engage in a range of activities that aim to enhance our mutual understanding of one another and recognise that this is the key to moving forward as one. We are also proud to recognise the Indigenous Australians within our School and all Indigenous Australians who help to promote Aboriginal cultural awareness. Through these conversations, learning and working
