Red Hill Country Club June / July 2015
Looking at the picture above, I’d like to thank you for buying this new
transport to get me to and from Red Hill for the presidential duties. I’ll
give up my parking space. Assessments to follow. JUST KIDDING!!!.
I’ve got to say, it was a pretty impressive helicopter. It was there for the
successful Assistance League Tournament that was held in May.
All kidding aside, I would like to congratulate our Thursday Team for
another superb season. I know they wanted the trophy again…..we all
did…., but they did have a great two-year run. Good job, Guys!!!!!
Loved being at Sandpiper again. It’s beautiful! And, the weather was
SO much better than last year!
The Champagne Tournament went off with great success. Great
tournament. Many thanks to the Committee and our Staff for all their
help and support. Super job: well done.!!
Turf Reduction is moving on. You can see the plans in the foyer or on
line at the Red Hill turf reduction website. The committee is working
hard on getting all the contracts in line and planning on getting this
project done in a timely manner. Perfect timing for being conscientious
about water saving. We’re ahead of the curve.
Have nothing but pars or better……..ah, well, if not, have FUN!!! See
you on the course!

The turf reduction project is now in full force with over 25 acres of turf being sprayed on

eventually die. Any areas that were missed or are still green will be touched up with chemical
over the next several weeks.
Just a reminder that on Monday, July 6th we will aerate the greens before the summer heat is
upon us. Also, we will aerate the tees and topdress the fairways on July 13th.A reminder as we approach the heat and
stress of the summer months, the maintenance staff will be out in the afternoons "syringing" the greens to cool them off.
This is necessary to maintain the health and playability throughout the summer. We apologize in advance for any in-
convenience this may cause the afternoon golfers.
See you on the course!

Joey Murray wins our 2015 Club Championship
Congratulations goes to Joey Murray who shot 216 over the three rounds of our Club Championship to
edge three time defending champ Gary Havro by a single stroke. The championship came down to the
54th hole and a clutch putt by Joey. Both hit perfect tee shots to #18 and were left with short wedges.
Joey hit his to approximately ten feet and Gary followed by hitting his to approximately
fifteen feet. Gary’s putt pulled up just short and Joey was able to roll his in for the win. The final hole capped an exciting nine in
which Joey gave back his one stroke lead to trail by one after the 16th hole. He nearly holed his second on #17 to make
birdie and get back even for the tournament.
Vince Elefante was looking to be the Cinderella Story of the tournament when he put together a first round score of 74 for a net
65. He faltered a bit in the second round but regained his form in the final round to win the Net Club Championship with a score
of 210, a full five strokes ahead of his nearest competitor.
It was another very competitive championship with net par being an excellent score. As a matter of fact, only 3 rounds of the 117
played broke 70. Elefante’s net 65 was the only sub 70 score in the first round and Mario Franklin and Hal Damuth put together
69’s in the final round.
Hal Daumth created some excitement in the first round when he scored an 11 on the first hole and followed it up with a
hole-in-one on hole #15. Unfortunately, his ace wasn’t enough to overcome his miserable start and is three round total of 225
missed a third place finish by three strokes.

Local Rules Update
In case you were unclear about the Optional Drop Zones on holes #1 and #2, please review the following Local Rule that has been
adopted to make sure everyone can proceed in a fair and equitable manner.
Local Rule
Optional Drop Zone – Hole #1
If a ball that is not lost nor Out of Bounds is deemed unplayable behind the #1 green in the area
defined by the Blue Stakes and the fence defining Out of Bounds, the player must proceed under USGA Rule 28, penalty
one stroke. As an additional option, under penalty of one stroke, the player may drop a ball within the Dropping Zone
located to the east of the putting green. This Dropping Zone is defined by Blue Stakes.
Optional Drop Zone – Hole #2
If a ball comes to rest on the cart path or on the grass between the cart path and the retaining wall within the area defined
by the posted Blue Stakes, the player may obtain relief under USGA Rule 24-2 without penalty. As an additional option,
the player may drop a ball (without penalty) within the Dropping Zone defined by the Blue Stakes on the west side of the
cart path.
Please remember these are additional options to the relief provided by the Rules of Golf in these locations.
HOT SHOTS
On April 3rd Michelle Lindley shot her best ever, a nice 100 that included birdies on holes #1 and #3.
Vaughn Brown has found playing the Gold Tees to be quite a bit more fun, especially after shooting his age (88) on April 4 th.
Dan Duir, playing by himself, had a one hop shot disappear into the hole on #4 for his first ever ace on April 5 th.
A perfect #4 hybrid gave Hal Damuth his first ace at Red Hill on hole #15 during the first round of our Club Championship (May
2nd).
High ball hitting Eddie Rowland playing from the right rough lofted a #6 iron over the tree in the middle of the fairway, it took
one hop and found the hole for an eagle 2 on May 9th.
On May 16th Zulma Zak shot her best ever, a very nice 87 from the Silver Tees. Her round included 8 pars 1 birdie and just 31
putts. This was her first sub-ninety round. On May 17th she put together another nice 87.
Also on May 16th Art Brisbane shot his best ever at Red Hill a very nice 82 that included player holes #5, #6, #7, and #8 in one
under par.
Playing the forward tees on May 20th Tony Papa put together nine hole scores of 41-36 for an age shattering round of 77. Like
Vaughn Brown, Tony is having some fun playing the forward tees.
Eddie Rowland recorded his fifth ace at Red Hill on May 23rd when he hit a perfect wedge on hole #10. This was the third time
his wedge shot found the bottom of the cup on this hole.
On May 26th Lory Stampfl shot an even par 74 from the Red Tees that included 6 birdies.
Congratulations to all of our Hot Shot players.

The History of Red Hill Country Club – Tapia’s Treasure
The land on which Red Hill Country Club stands has a background that is typical of much of Southern California. It
reaches back into the days of Spanish domination and to the time when Cucamonga was inhabited by Indians and Chinese
immigrants. Rancho Cucamonga came by its name from an Indian Village (Kukamonga) which sat on the land when the first white
men arrived.
In 1893 Don Tiburcio Tapia, a leading citizen and former Mayor (Alcalde) of Los Angeles, petitioned for a grant to the
Cucamonga lands. The grant for 13,000 acres was made and Tapia built a large, well-fortified adobe house on the crest of the
highest hill and raised great herds of cattle. The Indians he employed for the building operation rebelled when they realized that the
newcomers were taking their grazing lands from them. Retreating to the foothills and canyons, they made occasional raids upon the
live stock of the white man. Desert Indians, too, frequently invaded the rancho lands, and many tales were told by old residents of
raids, battles, and attacks upon the Tapia “fortress” on Red Hill. Tapia also planted the area’s first vineyards and began a successful
winery.
One of the tales about the early days of Cucamonga is that of the chest of coins which Don Tapia is said to have hidden
when rumors of war in Alta California began to spread. It was said that this chest contained not only Tapia’s own money, but also
the money entrusted to him by friends, and money collected for the building of a chapel near Cucamonga. It was rumored that, upon
his unexpected death in 1845, no one knew where the chest had been hidden except an Indian servant who had been sworn to
secrecy.
Tapia’s daughter Maria, who had married Leon Prudhomme, continued to occupy the house on Red Hill, and after her
father’s death she moved into his bedroom. According to legend, one night she saw a mysterious light move across the wall, coming
to rest on a particular spot. The apparition was repeated a number of times, greatly disturbing the young wife. In order to prove that
the vision was imaginary, her husband plunged a knife into the adobe wall. To his amazement, it went through the wall, disclosing a
hollow space in which was found a purse containing some silver coins and a scrap of parchment with a faded map and message.
The paper was studied carefully and much search followed to no avail. The treasure was never found. In 1858 the Prudhomme
family sold the rancho to John Rains. Mr. Rains abandoned the old Tapia residence and built a new one farther east, north of the
vineyards, portions of which stand today known to us as the Thomas Winery.
Although the Tapia family was long gone, the search for his treasure did not end. During the depression years from 1930 to
1935 groups of Castilian Spaniards and Mexican Americans would come to Red Hill on weekends, camp out nearby, and spend a
few days digging on the Red Hill Country Club Golf Course for the treasure. They removed so much dirt from beneath two large
oak trees that stood near the fifth and ninth tees that both trees died and had to be removed. Another favorite digging site was the
bank on the east side of the present sixteenth hole. Numerous holes and tunnels, resembling small mine shafts, were dug on this hill.
In another spot, a giant cactus patch once grew in the area west of the number two fairway (the present day strawberry farm). This
section was also often pockmarked with the holes of the gold seekers.
