GRAND KNIGHT REPORT This Month!! Annual Bishop Fishing Trip

Sep 29 - Oct 2 2016

By the time you read this bulletin the annual trip to the Sierra's will be over. I could not make the trip this year (1st time missed in 30 years) due to my wife's surgery recovery. Brother Bob Smith agreed take my place as event coordinator. I'm sure that everything will go well. I will get the results after his return and publish them next month. If you want to enjoy the trip next year, call the number below and make a reservation for next year for the weekend of October 6-8, 2017. They have trailers, RV sites, or tent sites. Be sure to mention that you will be part of the Simi Valley Knights of Columbus. The annual Men's KCO (K of C Outdoor Club) fishing trip to the Bishop Creek area of the Eastern Sierra's is be held on the 1st weekend of October. Join me and 30-50 of your Brother Knights, friends, and families for a great weekend. In addition to the South Fork of Bishop Creek that runs through the camp-ground, there are the South Lake, North Lake, Lake Sabrina and Intake-2 fishing areas nearby. The event is held at the Creekside RV Park with campsites, RV sites, and trail-ers available for rent. You must make your own reservation for sites. They hold a few sites for us but they are first come-first serve. Contact the office at Creekside for a reservation of your desired site. Be sure to tell them that you will be part of our group. They may be reached at 760-873-4483. Activities include a fishing derby with many prizes (adults and kids, depending on attendance), a BBQ Tri-Tip Dinner on Saturday Night, and card games when there are enough interested players. If we have enough interest and help we may have a Sun-day morning breakfast. Beautiful mountain (elevation 8300 ft at the campgrounds) scenery, good fish-ing (trout up to 5 lbs) and good people. You shouldn't pass it up. Ask anybody that has ever gone, they will tell you what a great weekend it is. This event is open to Council and Assembly members, their families, and friends. We generally have only male guests (let your wives and daughters have a "ladies night out" with other fishing trip widows). Lets hope that the weather, the Edison Company, and assorted others allow for more water into South Lake, Lake Sabrina, and the creeks. Like all of California, the Eastern Sierras need water/rain/snow. Let us pray that our drought ends before we have more serious water shortages and possible rationing. Special Note: The pond within the Creekside Campgrounds continues to be under control of the California Department of Fish and Game. They stock the pond on their schedule. All normal Fish and Game laws apply. Some of us made reservations for next year's trip as we checked out. The annual Men's KCO (K of C Outdoor Club) fishing trip to the Eastern Sierra's is held annually on the 1st weekend of October. For more information, please contact me at a Council or Assembly Event or call me.

THE DEATH PENALTY

On the ballot this Nov. 8 in California is Proposition 62.

This proposition would repeal the death penalty in our state and would make life in

prison without parole the maximum punishment that could be imposed for crimes of

murder.

My brother bishops and I in the California Catholic Conference are supporting this ef-

fort.

It is time for us to end the death penalty — not only in California but throughout the

United States and throughout the world.

The Catholic Church has always taught that legitimate governments have the right to

impose the death penalty on those guilty of the most serious crimes. This teaching has

been consistent for centuries — in the Scriptures, in the writings of the Church Fathers

and in the teachings of the popes.

But in recent years, there has been a growing consensus that the use of the death pen-

alty can no longer be accepted. This consensus is reflected in the Catechism of the

Catholic Church, in the teachings of bishops’ conferences around the world and in the

teachings of Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and now Pope Francis.

On his final visit to our country in 1999, St. John Paul called the death penalty “cruel

and unnecessary.” And it is true.

The reason is that every life is sacred and every person has a dignity that comes from

God. This is true for the innocent and it is true for the guilty. It is true even for those

convicted of the most violent crimes.

The Church has always opposed abortion and euthanasia because it involves the direct

and voluntary killing of innocent human beings. Obviously, the death penalty is differ-

ent. Those guilty of violent crime are not innocent.

But in opposing the death penalty we are also witnessing to the sanctity of life. We are

saying that even the most sinful and guilty lives are precious to God and should not be

taken by others.

Pray for me this week and I will be praying for you.

And may our Blessed Mother Mary help all of us to be faithful citizens and witnesses to

the culture of life in our time.

INSURANCE REPORT Rendering Pecuniary Aid The month of November in the Knights of Columbus is traditionally the time during which we remember our deceased Brother Knights- those that have gone to their eternal rest. Our thoughts also turn, naturally, to those who our Brother Knights left behind their widows and children. These are the same people, though of a different generation, who occupied Father McGivney’s thoughts in 1882 when he founded the order. The first two reasons listed on our charter for the establishment of the Knights of Columbus are “rendering pecuniary aid to its members, fami-lies and beneficiaries of members” and “rendering mutual aid and assis-tance to its sick, disabled and needy members and their families. My position as a field agent for the order has evolved from these princi-ples. I am here to help you plan financial security- both for yourself and those you may leave behind. I am not here to sell you insurance because you might die and be a part of our remembrances next November. I am here to sell you insurance because someone else might live… and I think you love that someone and would like her to continue to live with dig-nity. It’s not a pretty thought, but picture the first November, your loved ones will spend without you. How does it look? Call me today for an appointment. I want to hear from you. My Brothers, “Just as the sun shines on all the trees and flowers as if each were the only one on earth, so does God care for all souls in a special manner.” ~ Saint Therese of Lisieux How beautiful are these words are from St. Therese, and so appropriate too for the month of October. October is Respect Life Month where will as Knights must do all we can to protect life from conception to natural death. St. Therese’s words also ring true for those who are mentally handicapped. One in ten families in the United States, are directly affected by a person with intellectual dis-abilities at some point in their lifetime. The Knights Intellectual Disabilities Toot-sie Roll Drive take place this month and I ask all of you to help your council raise money for these most valuable and special people that God has created. Each council should also be preparing for our Columbus Day membership drives. Make sure you have those Tootsie Rolls out at your membership tables! Moorpark Council has an Admission Degree scheduled for October 11th. St. Rose Council had a Degree last week and we welcomed new members for St. Peter, St. Rose and St. Paschal Councils. I thank all who took park in recruitment and who took park in putting on the Degree. Remember we are all members of the membership com-mittee. Wear those badges every Sunday and mass and keep a Form 100 close at hand. October 30th is Priesthood Sunday. Let’s get all councils in District 82 to support this day. Supplies can be ordered from Supreme (In solidarity with priest buttons) as well as from www.priestsunday.org I will be happy to assist any council get this going. November is fast approaching and so are the elections. MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT DEPUTY DEACON’S CORNER

Being Christ For Others Pope St. John Paul II described the Knights of Columbus as the “strong right arm of the Catholic Church.” If we as Knights are to live up to this title, we must certainly be Christ for oth-ers. As devout Catholics, we each have our own spirituality. Charity is the outward manifestation of our spirituality. We work, we act and do deeds for others. We do the things we do because we know they are the correct actions to take. When we serve the needs of the community, we fully live our lives as Jesus taught. When He said, “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matt 25:40) Sincere prayer as well as material goods also contribute to the welfare of our brothers/sisters in need. Our prayer life contributes to the spirituality each of us has developed. This prayer life helps our understanding of church teachings. Our time in prayer – lectio divina, centering prayer, devotions and conversation with God - enables us to enter into an inti-mate encounter with the risen Christ, leading us to a greater understanding of our purpose and mission on this earth, to help those in need. We are all called to be Christ to those in need. As Knights of Columbus let us never give up on our special call to charity. Deacon Terry

Helping seniors to keep driving

As much or more than they wish to remain in their homes as they age, today’s seniors wish to keep their ability to drive for as long as possible.

This should come as no surprise to most adults. The capacity to drive represents their ability to enjoy out-of-home activities when they choose to, and that is linked to a feeling of independ-ence and control.

Seniors will stop driving in certain situations so that they can continue driving when they feel it’s safe. They may not drive at night, only drive short distances, not drive in bad weather or on freeways or unfamiliar roads.

These self-imposed restrictions allow them to feel more comfortable behind the wheel and may extend the number of years they can safely drive.

Here are six more ways seniors may extend their safe driving into their later years.

1. Stay healthy. A senior’s health status has a huge impact on their driving ability. Heart dis-ease and diabetes have been linked to the occurrence of crashes by older drivers. According to the AAA’s Foundation for Traffic Safety, older adults who have fallen are about 40 percent more likely to experience a motor vehicle crash than older adults who had not.

2. Get enough sleep. Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect your mental health, physical health and quality of life and improves your reaction time in response to a potential accident.

3. Build your flexibility. Age takes its toll on flexibility. Many older drivers experience difficulty simply getting in and out of their vehicles. Others have challenges with performing the range of motion activities required to properly drive a car.

Those interested in learning about exercises to improve neck, shoulder, back and overall body flexibility can go to www.Seniordriving.aaa.com.

4. Learn smart driving techniques. Take AARP’s Smart Driver Course or log into AARP’s Driver Resource Center.

Among other things, the resource center allows seniors to practice their skills in six real life interactive driving situations. The site’s drug-interaction checker lets a

THE OTHER SIDE OF 50 The other side of 50, continued

Continued on next page

person enter their medications and supplements to see how they in-teract and may affect driving.

5. Look for a medium height car. According to Kiplinger magazine, small cars tend to be too low to the ground for seniors to get into eas-ily and often don’t have the leg and head room that an older body needs.

Big vehicles often have a step up to enter the car that is hard to navi-gate for seniors with mobility issues. Bigger cars are also tough to maneuver in tight parking spaces.

6. Buy or lease a late-model car. Late-model cars have a host of new technology designed to make driving easier for all of us, seniors in-cluded. My husband and I tend to buy preowned vehicles (a fancy way to say used), so we never have the latest and greatest gizmos in our cars.

Recently, one of our Senior Concerns staff bought a new Subaru Im-preza. Riding in her car, I was impressed with how many new tech-nology options are available to make it easier to be a safe driver.

Our staff member ’s new car has EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which includes a warning system that indicates when you cross a lane without activating your signal and a pre-collision braking system that automatically stops the car before it collides with an object.

Her car also has a backup camera. Besides dramatically reducing the number of backover accidents, a backup camera makes parking much easier.

Older drivers represent the fastest-growing driving population. Stud-ies have shown seniors suffer a significant reduction in their quality of life when they are no longer able to drive.

It’s important we find ways to keep them and others safe on the road.

CARDINAL DOLAN LAUNCHES 2016-17 PROGRAM WITH RESPECT LIFE MONTH STATEMENT September 28, 2016 Respect Life Program theme for 2016-17: "Moved by Mercy" "Everyone should be cherished and protected!"

WASHINGTON—In a statement to mark Respect Life Month, Oc-tober 2016, Timothy Cardinal Dolan of New York called for all hu-man life to be "cherished and protected." Cardinal Dolan chairs the Committee on Pro-Life Activities of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

The Cardinal's statement launches the year-long Respect Life Program (www.usccb.org/respectlife), which explores the theme, "Moved by Mercy." As Pope Francis said in calling for the Jubilee Year of Mercy, "We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us." Cardinal Dolan said: "When we let our hearts be moved by God's mercy, it shapes every-thing." Cardinal Dolan emphasized the need to protect human life at every stage. "From each tiny child waiting to be born, to individu-als nearing death, all are precious and deserve our care and pro-tection."

"Women and men suffering after abortion, individuals tempted to end their lives, couples longing to conceive a child, people pushed to the margins of society by a 'throwaway culture', expec-tant mothers facing challenging pregnancies, and every other person—each 'has a place in God's heart from all eternity'," he said, citing the 2016 apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia. . . (The Joy of Love). Cardinal Dolan called for every person to be "treated with the dignity they deserve. No one should ever be treated callously or carelessly – everyone should be cherished and protected!" Begun in 1972, the Respect Life Program highlights the value and dignity of human life throughout the year. It is observed in Catholic dioceses throughout the United States. Tools equip leaders across the spectrum of Catholic work, ministry, and edu-cation to integrate the message of mercy on life issues.

BINGO WORKERS

Bingo Workers

We are in need of more pull tab workers and we still need a finance person. Training is free and it is not a hard job. For pull tabs you basically sell lottery tickets to the players. If you are new to the council please call me so I can get you on the Bingo Schedule. If you can’t work a specific weekend in June or have a shift preference please email me at [email protected] . I produce the schedule around the 2nd Wednesday of the month before. So get me any special requests for June by May 10th.

I have also begun to post the bingo worker schedule online at www.kc5803.org, you will need a password to access it. This is the same password as for the roster. Call me if you need the password.

I have now begun to send a Flocknotes to all members with the schedule when it is done, I still mail paper copies out. If you only want an email and no paper copy, please let me know via email at [email protected].

Additional new regular bowlers will be asked/allowed to bowl with the following order: being a Knight, a Knight's spouse, or part of a Knight's family (age 18 and older). Friends, neighbors, coworkers or others with an existing regular bowler as a sponsor will be considered as space allows.

We can always use subs and our fees are reasonable. Only

$3 for a sub after you pay your USBC Sanctioning fees of $20 (estimated). Let me know if you are interested in joining as a regular bowler or substitute.

Please welcome the newest member of Council 5803, Brother Knight Jim Clarizio. He made his First Degree on Wednesday, September 28. PRAYER FOR PEACE IN OUR COMMUNITIES Let us pray . . . O Lord our God, in your mercy and kindness, no thought of ours is left unnoticed, no desire or concern ignored. You have proven that blessings abound when we fall on our knees in prayer, and so we turn to you in our hour of need. Surrounded by violence and cries for justice, we hear your voice tell-ing us what is required . . . “Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Mi 6:8). Fill us with your mercy so that we, in turn, may be merciful to oth-ers. Strip away pride, suspicion, and racism so that we may seek peace and justice in our communities. Strengthen our hearts so that they beat only to the rhythm of your holy will. Flood our path with your light as we walk humbly toward a future filled with encounter and unity. Be with us, O Lord, in our efforts, for only by the prompting of your grace can we progress toward virtue. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
