God as Our LighthouseIn my wrestling and in my doubts

In my failures You won’t walk out

Your great love will lead me through

You are the peace in my troubled sea!

Shining in the darkness, I will follow You

My Lighthouse, my lighthouse

I will trust the promise,

You will carry me safe to shore…

This song “My Lighthouse“ by Rend Collective has a very promising message and means a lot to me personally as it has helped me through tough phases of life before and still does. God is with us and we can trust him and lay our worries down in front of him. He will never let us down and leads us like the light of a lighthouse in the right direction. He has led me to the other end of the world - far away from my German family and friends. In times of COVID the distance seems even further. The unknown of when I will see my loved ones again is not only hard for me but for so many in and out of Australia. Closed borders to other states and countries separate families which can make life quite challenging.

In John 8:12 we read: When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Especially in times like now it is so special and important at the same time to know that someone is watching over us and has it all under control. And he will bring us safe to shore (and reunite us with friends and family one day) no matter where that shore might be.

From the PrincipalCAMPERS AND CAMPINGLast week our Year 3 cohort spent two days and overnight at Nunyara campsite in Belair. Whilst the excitement of their first overnight camp meant that sleep may have been slightly limited, these children enjoyed a fantastic camp with team games, and an epic hike in the national park.

As I write this, our Year 6 group are enjoying the challenge of their aquatics camp on the Murray River in Swanport. This camp is non-stop kayaking, sailing, knee-boarding, paddle boarding and skiing for three days. These children learn so much in a short space of time about water safety and handling various watercraft.

Coming up very soon will be our Year 2 sleepover, where the children experience their first full cohort overnight stay.

Congratulations to the Year 3s and Year 6s for their achievements and thank you to the teaching staff and parent volunteers on these camps who worked tirelessly day and night for our Year 3 and Year 6 children.

PARENT AND PRINCIPAL CONVERSATIONSIn the coming weeks, I would like to speak with parents from the school via Zoom as a way of checking in and catching up with you given we haven’t had many opportunities due to COVID limitations and my leave. I have scheduled these at possible lunch times for those of you who are trying to manage a work day. I am only scheduling one conversation per year level at this stage, dates listed below. You are welcome to join any or all of the year levels that your children are in. Please email Jo Wilson at [email protected] to rsvp for your year level and to be sent a Zoom invitation link. If you are very interested in a conversation but are unable to make the suggested date and time for your child’s year level/s, please also email Jo Wilson to indicate this and I

will attempt to schedule some additional times later in the term.

Year 6 parents: Wednesday 27 October 12pm-1pm

Year 4 parents: Friday 29 October 12:30pm-1:30pm

Reception parents: Tuesday 2 November 12pm-1pm

Year 2 parents: Friday 5 November 12pm-1pm

Year 5 parents: Tuesday 9 November 12:30pm-1:30pm

Year 1 parents: Wednesday 10 November 12:30pm-1:30pm

Year 3 parents: Friday 12 November 12pm-1pm

I look forward to speaking with as many of you as I can!

COVID19 UPDATEWe recently reviewed our COVID procedures and at this time the advice continues to be to limit non-essential visitors on site. We are grateful to all parents who have been using different morning routines to farewell their children for school. I know there are also many volunteers who would like to be supporting us, however at this time we will remain cautious under the current recommendations.

A number of usual events for the end of the year will need to be altered or cancelled to ensure we adhere to school COVID recommendations. Our team will be working through these in the coming weeks and will have more to communicate soon. Already, as communicated in last week’s Inspire, we have decided that we will hold closing Chapel at St Paul for students only instead of an evening End of Year Service at Endeavour College. Our Year 6 families will celebrate a graduation ceremony and dinner with ticketed seating at Sunnybrae Estate. Thank you for your patience as we work through further class events such as Reception Christmas Concert, and parent events such as the Class Carer’s dinner. We will update you as soon as we can.

From the Deputy Principal2022 CLASS ALLOCATIONSOver the coming weeks, teachers will begin compiling drafts of 2022 class allocations. If you have any significant child needs that you believe should be considered during the class allocation process for next year, please email me prior to the end of October at [email protected].

Please be aware that this is a complex process which will only take into account educationally, medically or socially relevant information. Therefore, we cannot take parent or student requests simply based on personal preference for teachers or student combinations. As always, we take seriously the trust you place in us as educators to make the best decisions we possibly can for all students.

From the Wellbeing LeaderMISS-CONNECTION SUMMIT- TURIA PITT- YOU CAN DO HARD THINGSThroughout the school holidays, I was fortunate to participate in a series of webinars which I will share over the coming weeks. The first webinar I will share my takeaways is Turia Pitt- You Can Do Hard Things.

Turia Pitt is living proof that, with the right mindset, anything is possible. Caught in a grassfire while competing in a 100km ultramarathon in 2011, Turia suffered burns to 65% of her body. But surviving is the least of her achievements. One of Australia’s most admired and widely recognised people, Turia has gone on to become a bestselling author, two-time Ironman and humanitarian.

Turia shared the following about doing hard things:

• Society sometimes makes us think that something challenging must be hard for us. Challenges are what make us step up, grow, get us out of our comfort zone and allow us to learn new things about ourselves.

• Positive talk is like chatting to yourself how you would to your best friend.

• It’s OK to feel frustrated, sad or annoyed. It’s natural to lack self-confidence from time to time and Turia recommends a movement break (outside for a walk, mindful stretching, playing your favourite song and dancing)

To find out more about Turia Pitt and her story, please visit Turia Pitt - Bestselling Author, Athlete & Mindset Coach

TV SERIES CAUTION- HOW TO CHANGE NETFLIX PARENTAL CONTROLS.Last week I shared about the new Netflix series, Squid Game, and had a number of follow up conversations with parents about how to change parental controls on streaming services. Safe on social media https://www.safeonsocial.com/ provides parents, teachers and school communities cyber safety training and created the below step-by-step guide to change the parental controls on Netflix.

Netflix has easy-to-use parental controls, which will allow you to block specific movie or show titles, change the ratings of the titles your children are offered while watching Netflix, and you can even remove the title from the menu options altogether.

Setting up parental controls and blocking specific movie/show titles will take some of the work out of trying to keep on top of what your children are viewing and supervising their content.

To do this:

Go to Netflix.com on your device & sign in to your account.

Click the ‘manage profiles’ button and click on which profile you want to edit/restrict.

Click on the edit button under ‘Maturity Settings.’

Enter your Netflix password.

Set the maturity rating for the programmes and films you want to allow in that profile. (G up to R18+)

Page 4: Upcoming Events God as Our Lighthouse

Under ‘Title Restrictions,’ type in the movie’s name or show you wish to restrict or block and select the title from the drop-down menu.

The title will now be listed in red and will be blocked. You can unblock by going back through steps 1-6 and clicking on the X to remove it from the blocked list.

Click ‘save,’ and the movie/show title will now be removed from their profile.

General NewsTOILET BLOCKAfter three long months, the new toilet block at the rear of the school is finally complete and has officially opened. We would like to thank staff, parents, and especially our students for their patience and understanding whilst the build occurred. We would also like to thank the South Australian State Government for its generous contribution towards the cost of the project.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB- CHRISTMAS EDITIONS. The Book Club magazine for Issue 7 was sent home last week. Due to this being a shorter term, and the fact that Issue 8 will be sent home in the second week of November, we will be closing Issue 7 off on Friday 29th of October.

Issue 7 and 8 are the Christmas bumper editions for Book Club, so if any of your order includes gifts for Christmas and you would prefer it wasn’t sent home via the student in the grey tray, please email us at [email protected] and we will happily store your order at the front office for you to collect instead.

BOOK FAIRNext week the library will host our annual Scholastic Book Fair. The Fair will be open to parents and students next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Students will get an opportunity on Tuesday to view the Fair before it opens and make a ‘wish list’. Parents wanting to visit the Fair will need to book a time slot to visit via the Qkr! app. Items from the Fair can be purchased with cash, credit card, EFTPOS and the Scholastic Book Fair online order form. Detailed information about the Book Fair including how to book a visit will be sent home via email this week.

LOUD SHIRT DAYIn 1998, the Cora Barclay Centre wanted to introduce the idea of a fun and interactive way for people to support deaf kids - and just like that, over coffee, Loud Shirt Day was born!

Since its inception twenty years ago, Loud Shirt Day has grown into a national campaign run by First Voice members across Australia. Recently, international members in New Zealand and the UK have got involved - Loud Shirt Day is now a global campaign!

Loud Shirt Day is a great way to not only have fun with your friends, family, workmates or school but also to do some good in the community AND it’s easy! All you need to start is a LOUD shirt.

Held annually each year in October, Loud Shirt Day encourages members of the community to get LOUD and showcase their support by rocking their best (or worst!) LOUD shirt or outfit and raising money to support kids who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Why we get LOUD?

Did you know that 12,000 children across Australia face every day with hearing loss or hearing difficulties? And that most Australians wouldn’t know where to turn if their child had hearing issues?

That’s why we get LOUD. The money raised from Loud Shirt Day will fund the vital services and support, provided by Can:Do 4Kids, for SA kids and their families who are deaf or hard of hearing that will help them to learn, listen, speak and live their best lives.

With your generous support and donations, SA families will be able to continue to access these critical, life-changing services.

GROWING FAITH AT HOME WEEK OF 17/10/21Verse for the week

“Even the Son of Man did not come to be served. Instead, he came to serve others. He came to give his life as the price for setting many people free”.

MARK 10:45

The very best way to learn the value of service is to do it!

Here are some ideas to serve as a family this week:

- Engage your children in serving others together with you, whether inside or outside the home (eg; weed a garden, bake biscuits, visit an elderly neighbour)

- Look at the talents of the people in your family and help fit them to find ways to use these gifts to serve others.

- Be on the look out for opportunities to serve in your neighbourhood.

- Take advantage of service opportunities offered through your church, school or local community

- Talk with each other about experiences of serving and being served. Draw connections between your faith and your actions.

- Help each other know how Christ serves us, and calls us, in turn to serve others.
