During 2017 we will remind one another of our promise during the offertory time. January’s emphasis is service. Our question is: How will we serve God as Christ followers during 2017? One of the ways we serve is by giving, and I invite you to remember that when you are not in worship, either for personal reasons or other concerns, such as the weather, funds for our budget still have to be raised. Unlike some churches, we don’t have a surplus of money from which to pay expenses related to our general budget. So please remember to serve by sharing gifts from what God has given to you. Another way that we serve is through prayer. Our Bishop, Debra Wallace- Padgett, is calling upon each church to pray from January 15-21 for our effectiveness in our mission of disciple-making, and for the work of the Commission on a Way Forward. She is also asking us to fast weekly, as able, for our United Methodist Church’s future. I will include these concerns as part of our pastoral prayer and invite you to pray at the altar or at your seats for discernment about how we address the differences within our denomination. This week we will be talking about making a choice to be humble instead of arrogant in connection with life and spiritual realities. To do that we must stand under something instead of over it. Our starting point or posture, is instrumental in changing our heart and lives. We need humility when it comes to addressing sensitive issues such as human sexuality. I will share this Sunday from my experiences as a pastor dealing with issues that require much more than my brain power. My hope is that our United Methodist Church can remain faithful to God while practicing humility and treating one another, especially those who are different from us, with reverent respect. See you Sunday—unless it snows.
