We were fortunate to have well known actress Joanna David to officially cut the ribbon to open the new grass amphitheatre at Holme. On a beautiful summer evening in July, our first performance was held in the brand new outdoor arena. A large number of guests enjoyed canapés and prosecco by the ponds before being led down through the gardens by the Wareham Town Crier and into the amphitheatre where they spread themselves over the grass terraces to await the performance. After a short opening ceremony, the crowd were entertained by some extremely talented local youngsters from the Top Notes Youth Theatre based in Wareham. Their group tutor Emma Aldir opened the show with a commanding rendition of “Cabaret”. The youngsters then enthralled the audience with a selection of well known songs from musicals. A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all. Joanna David took time out from her busy schedule to be at Holme and lead the celebration. She said “I felt so privileged to be asked because I have seen Holme grow and develop over the years into the beautiful place it is today. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful facility right on our doorstep and this new performance venue will be a fantastic asset for the community.” The grass theatre could easily accommodate a seated audience of 500 and more for a standing concert. The outdoor sound system worked perfectly and it is now hoped to attract a range of performers to put on plays, jazz, blues, classical and folk concerts as well as being made available to local schools, community groups and charities for fund raising events. UPCOMING EVENTS

There’s no place like Holme

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the Autumn Newsletter.

There is nothing like a festival to bring the rain. As I write on a Sunday at the end of July, car loads of unfortunate Lulworth Bestival goers are streaming past Holme on their way home a day early to avoid the rain and gale that is raging outside. After 3 months of no rain and incessant heat, today is a welcome relief from being stuck on the end of a hose pipe and the soaking rain is sorely needed.

Despite the weather difficulties we have progressed well with making improvements to the north car park and building a safe area to unload lorries. In the gardens we have finished the amphitheatre and intensified the planting in the shrub garden for more colour and interest throughout the seasons.

I love summer time at Holme with its long warm evenings, masses of flower and the multitude of wildlife but I also love autumn because with the cooling temperatures and heavier dews, the grass is greener and the lower angle of the sunlight often shows the plants off to even better effect. With that in mind there will be lots to enjoy at Holme this autumn and our team have worked hard to make your visits as enjoyable as possible.

I look forward to seeing you.

Simon

Cream Cakes and Dreamy Desserts – Get them here!

The Orchard cafe has just taken delivery of a brand new self-serve chilled display cabinet. It is already in use with a daily selection of delicious Rum Babas, chocolate fudge cake, fresh cream and fruit trifle, passion cake and Swiss roll among other things.

Orchard Cafe Manager Amanda said “Customers have been asking us to provide fresh cream cakes and pastries to compliment our Holme cooked cake range but until now we didn’t have the refrigerated facility so we are delighted with this new equipment”.

Also in the orchard this Autumn we welcome back Andy and his Swing Easy band for their popular lunchtime sessions. We have a few evening events planned such as the two film screenings as part of the Purbeck Film Festival and the return of the ever popular Liz’s Quiz nights. These Quiz nights are for teams of 4 or more and the quiz is preceded by a meal and licenced bar so there is a great opportunity to socialise before you ‘tax the grey matter’! All good fun. If you can’t get a team together but would still like to come there will be others who are happy to team up with you, so let us know.

The winner of the Spring competition was Jill Harding for her caption that went with the picture. “Listen very carefully, we shall say this only once... come to Holme!” (French accent required!)

There were many other humourous entries so thank you very much to all who ‘put pen to paper’ or more likely these days ‘tapped the keys for an email’.

RESULTS OF SPRING COMPETITION

The Orchard is a lovely venue for Christmas Parties and we can accommodate large or small groups. If you have a large group of 30 plus and would prefer an evening booking we can cater for this too.

The menu will be published in early October but we are already taking provisional bookings so please come in and discuss your requirements with either Amanda or Sonia. Or if you prefer phone 01929 554716 Ext 3 Orchard or email [email protected]

Plant Manager Richard saysFor those that like the heat, then the summer of 2018 has been perfect, but for most of us mere mortals, at times we were crying out for a bit of shade in which to keep cool. All the evidence is pointing towards more summer heat waves in the future so it makes sense to do something about it. Just by planting a tree you can help cool your garden and shade your house if positioned correctly.

Trees help by creating areas of shade not only for you to sit and relax but also for other plants to live beneath. It can generate a less stressful environment that would otherwise be in hot baking sun. Deciduous trees are perfect as they keep the area cooler in summer but let in winter light to lift the spirits and banish the gloom.

A tree may well take 5 years before it is fully established and starts

creating the desired effect. Thus, it makes sense to plan and plant as soon as possible. Come in and discuss your requirements with one of our experts and get exactly the right tree for your position.

At Holme we love roses and put a great deal of time and thought into developing the range we offer. Krissi, our resident Rose Queen and Simon sit down together for a whole day to look through catalogues and vigorously discuss the merits and shortcomings of each variety. The roses are rated on beauty, shape, style, flowering time, disease resistance and of course scent.

Last year’s range is pruned by about a third to make way for new introductions and returning old favourites. This year

nearly 50 varieties have gone and the range has been broadened to 170 varieties in total. These are all excellent forms but Krissi and Simon have gone a stage further and selected 25 deemed to be of exceptional merit and possessed of outstanding qualities in terms of beauty, scent, repeat flowering and health.

These Roses will form the ‘Holme Romantic Rose Collection’. This new range and all the other varieties will be available from mid-November.

Holme for Gardens WEDDING FAYRE, Sunday 30th September 2018. A perfect day to explore our beautiful grounds, enjoy a drink in our stunning marquee and discuss wedding ideas with our team. This is a FREE event, come and see what we have to offer!

Just two of the exceptional forms to make it into the Holme Romantic Rose Collection

Despite the very challenging weather conditions this year, the Gardens at Home are maturing quickly and some of the trees that were planted just 3 years ago are already 15ft tall. Whilst the shrubs are filling in the spaces are packed with perennials and annuals so the overall show has height, texture, interest and masses of colour. The well established collections of Michaelmas Daisy, Dahlias,

autumn flowering grasses and heathers mean the gardens will continue to look glorious all the way through to November.

The gardens are open everyday and a day ticket is £3 or you can purchase a half year season ticket for just £5 and come as often as you like between now and the end of the year. Holme is also open to visiting groups and garden societies. Chris T commented on Tripadvisor. “I thought the admission charge was extremely reasonable for what you see there”

For more information please email [email protected]

This year Holme has extended the Lavender Walk, built the new grass amphitheatre, planted 100 conifer varieties and continued to plant more unusual trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. All this planting increases the biodiversity and attracts lots of wonderful wildlife and the bees think they are in honey heaven! So why not come and see what the ‘buzz’ is all about.

Blooming Bulbs?Liz and I found plenty of inspiration when we visited the amazing Keukenhof gardens and bulb fields in Holland last spring. We were completely bowled over by the colourful displays and use of design.

Now is the time to plant your bulbs to brighten your garden in late winter and spring 2019. Top Tip for Tulips: Buy Now for plenty of choice, but don’t plant until December when your beds are clear.

As soon as the children go back to school after the summer holidays, and the nights start drawing in, our thoughts turn to Christmas. All the Farm shop goodies and gift ware stock has already been reserved, some as early as January this year! We get very excited unpacking all the boxes of treats, eats and gifts and can’t wait to unpack it all and create some beautiful displays for you. Don’t worry, we won’t do a big supermarket and start Christmas in August, but do come in and have a browse from the end of September to find just the right pretty gift or ornament for friends and family

Here at Holme we get huge pleasure from feeding the wild birds around the pond. This autumn and winter along with our already extensive range of bird food and feeders, we have some new additions. Winter warmer energy mix is a special seed blend giving birds the essential energy for the cold season and enriched with extra vitamins. Also there is a squirrel proof mix of hot pepper flavour seed, which the birds cannot taste but the squirrels can, and thus will not eat.

We have extended the range of the hugely popular Flutter Butter jars and feeders with some stylish wooden holders that will bring in the birds, and enhance the look of your wildlife feeding station.

COLOURFUL WINTER PATIO POTS

Gardens at Holme

When other plants start fading away flowering grasses really begin to show off. As autumn progresses they just get better and better. Investigate the many types of Miscanthus, Panicum and Calamagrostis which will give interest right through to February with feathery plumes, good colours and interesting textures.

Dense low growing mounds of heather are a good planting companion for the narrow bladed upright growing grasses, an attractive combination in the garden but one that also occurs on our local heaths. In the gardens at Holme we use grasses not just with heathers but also in combination with flowers and shrubs for grace and contrast. Two other favourites of ours are the fountain grass Pennisetum ‘Hameln’ and the brightly coloured blood grass Imperata ‘Red Baron’.

A great selection will be available from the plant section this autumn.

Graceful Grasses

After some fabulous colourful displays this summer, thanks to our buyer Andrew sourcing the best quality bedding, it is time to leave summer behind. A splash of colour in and around the house is just what most people need to banish any Winter blues. Certainly Winter display pots can be a bit more challenging to plant than summer containers, but with a bit of thought a really attractive show can be achieved.

There are scores of brightly coloured evergreens such as one of the many hollies, Choisya Sundance, Euonymus ‘Emerald Gaiety’ etc. Add some winter stem colour from one of the fiery stemmed dogwoods, some ivy (many with intricate leaf patterns) to trail down over the edge and a Phormium which will provide a bold vertical element to the display.

Flowers can be provided by using winter heathers, pansies, primroses, violas and Cyclamen and to add another dimension use something scented like the evergreen Sarcococca or the shrubby honeysuckle Lonicera Winter Beauty. More flowers and colour can be added with bulbs put in at planting time to emerge in late winter.

Other plants we would recommend are evergreen ferns, ornamental cabbage and colourful leafy evergreens such as Heuchera.

Coloured pots help lift the winter’s gloom but be sure to use a well drained compost to keep the pots moist but not waterlogged.

For more advice see one of our team or attend our Winter Patio Pot planting demonstration on Tuesday 9th October. Lots of choice and help available in the plant centre every day.

If the long, hot, dry Summer of 2018 is going to become more common in future years, then as gardeners we need to adapt the way we think about our gardens. One of the most effective things we can do to help our plants is to apply regular mulches to reduce weeds and help conserve

moisture. Organic mulches from compost are far better than gravel or plastic mulch as they also

• Condition the soil by improving drainage, aeration and water holding capacity

• Increase beneficial microbes that help plants

• Increase fertility by adding organic nutrients

• Encourage worms to dig more tunnels thus aerating the soil and improving drainage

Another tip is to plant in Autumn when soil is warm and moist to encourage more rooting before the plant faces the stresses of the following summer.

“A charge of £3 to walk round this beautiful space is the horticultural bargain of the county.” says Liz D on Tripadvisor

David says “ ”Beat The Drought

HOLME NEWS: Sam the ManWow! What a scorcher of a summer it’s been, and with the lovely weather comes a great opportunity to enjoy and admire your lovely gardens that you take pride in. However, we must remember that we are not the only ones who appreciate our efforts. Gardens are a haven in our ever-urbanising world for our tiny neighbours that dwell in the undergrowth. Not only is it such a joy to see a garden ‘buzzing’ with activity, it’s also, perhaps, a responsibility of ours to make sure they are provided with a suitable home to live in and enjoy. Whether it be our friends the hedgehogs who rely on us for their late-night meals, or the humming bees and butterflies that not only help our plants, but also bring a breath of life into our gardens. Even some of the less pretty looking residents such as woodlice, beetles and ladybirds play their part and we should encourage them to do so. Right now, here at Holme, we’re stocking up on items to help you care for your critters. Such as ‘New In’ Tom Chambers Bug Homes or our hedgehog feeding stations and scrummy treats. Whatever you need, we’ll have it. So be sure to head on over and help make your garden a garden for all.

Garden Design by SimonWould you benefit from some help and guidance with your garden? Perhaps you have plans or ideas but are not sure how to achieve them. A consultation with Simon will help to clear the log jam and get things moving forward.

Simon has 30 years experience at designing and creating gardens and has built up a network of landscapers and gardeners, so if you need physical help with the building of your garden then Simon will be able to point you in the right direction.

Simon

We were fortunate to have well known actress Joanna David to officially cut the ribbon to open the new grass amphitheatre at Holme.

On a beautiful summer evening in July, our first performance was held in the brand new outdoor arena. A large number of guests enjoyed canapés and prosecco by the ponds before being led down through the gardens by the Wareham Town Crier and into the amphitheatre where they spread themselves over the grass terraces to await the performance.

After a short opening ceremony, the crowd were entertained by some extremely talented local youngsters from the Top Notes Youth

Theatre based in Wareham.

We are very lucky to have such a wonderful facility right on our doorstep and this new performance venue will be a fantastic asset for the community.”

The grass theatre could easily accommodate a seated audience of 500 and more for a standing concert. The outdoor sound system worked perfectly and it is now hoped to attract a range of performers to put on plays, jazz, blues, classical and folk concerts as well as being made available to local schools, community groups and charities for fund raising events. Whatever takes your fancy really!

See the Events panel on back page for dates and details.

ukThe winner of the Spring competition was Jill Harding for her caption that went with the picture.
