On Monday, I had the pleasure of attending the Wattle excursion to the Kalamunda HistoryVillage, Library, and Stirk Park. From the initial pleasant bush walk, the Village experience, and finish in Stirk Park, the whole day was interesting, informative and thoroughlyenjoyable. As with everything Natalie does for her class, the planning, execution andeducational value of the excursion was excellent.

The tour of the ‘old’ classroom was particularly interesting for me. Aside from the horror offinding one of my Year 6 reading books as an exhibit, it was surprising just how much hasnot changed over time.

The whiteboards were black, but the model handwriting and arithmetic lessons areseemingly timeless.

Students sit in rows receiving direct instruction from the teacher at the front of the class.Explicit direct instruction is probably the most dominant teaching model used in Stateschools today. The concept of students sitting in ordered rows facing front has its origins intraining for factory work in the 19th century and is still very common today.

The students had little chalk boards to practice on, our students have little whiteboards.

The classroom was adorned with lists of class helpers, shelves of books, timetables charts, world maps and alphabets. The only difference today would be in the amount of books andmore countries on the world map.

The students got to see an actual cane, one feature of my schooling which we havethankfully moved on from!

Wattle

Wattle students travelled back in time this week. They arrived at school dressed aspioneers, ready to experience life as a hills pioneer. Our excursion began with a walk alongthe old railway track in Kalamunda. We spotted one of the first shops in Kalamunda andconsidered the differences between our grocery shopping today and grocery shopping as apioneer.

Soon we arrived at the Kalamunda History Village. Whilst here, the students participated ina school lesson, washing the dishes, washing the clothes, sorting the fruit, labelling thefruit boxes, grinding the wheat down to flour, and imaging how a family of 8 lived in a 4roomed home, amongst other things.

After the History Village, the students moved to Kalamunda Library. Vanessa, the librarian, read the students a couple of stories and gave them a tour of the library. She invited all thestudentsn to bring their families back to visit the library.

Finally, the students walked down Haynes Street looking for fairy doors, before enjoying awell-deserved play at Stirk Park. A great day was had by everyone. Thank you to all theadults who supported us on the day. I wonder where they will travel next??

Music

Term 3 has been filled with a carnival of animals - introducing orchestral instruments in thePrimary school. Rehearsal/performance skills have been the focus within the Secondarystudents.

All of our students, regardless of age group, have been learning their performance pieces

for our upcoming Music Night (Term 4, Week 2) and are all enjoying singing, playing, anddancing. You may have heard the song 'Glorious' being sung around the house!

Our private instrumental students are progressing in leaps and bounds, and are allsounding fabulous in their lessons each week. Having a private lesson each week isdefinitely a benefit to those who are taking part in them, and the extra work is evident inour class lessons.

Our whole school Music Night is coming up in Term 4, as well as our school performanceat the Darlington Arts Festival, and lastly, Recital Morning. Keep an eye out for theseupcoming events!

A worry is a thought that makes you feel scared, upsets you, or makes you just feel bad.Worries can also make you feel physical symptoms, such as feeling sick or fluttery in thetummy, dizzy, dry mouth, headaches etc. Being worried is a feeling just like other feelingssuch as feeling joy, embarrassment, loneliness, sadness etc. Being afraid is a feeling thateveryone has and it is completely normal. Our Amygdala is responsible for this because itis there to protect us.

Sometimes we can worry too much and this can affect how happy we feel and how muchwe enjoy our lives. If we feel too worried then it really helps to learn ways to feel better.Mindfulness can help you 'switch off' from having these thoughts and allows us not to get'caught up' or 'stuck' in thinking about worries too much. We can also write our worriesdown and put them into a Worry Box. We can also use the 'Reach Out Worry Time' app tostore our worries for a more suitable time when we can address them.

In life we will have stressful moments, but let's turn these stressful moments intosomething productive.

English

Jarrah spent the first half of this term learning about infographics, which then enabled themto make their own – some of them looked very professional!

A number of brave souls also presented theirs to the class!

Now they are working hard analysing short stories (with a surprising one from Roald Dahl),and by the end of the term they’ll be writing their own.

In Wandoo we read George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm’, and we’ve started a short study onpropaganda over the last 100 years to inspire them to make their own posters, channellingtheir historical, cultural and artistic understanding – promoting, of course, the esteemedfarm itself!

In IB Language and Literature, we’re studying ‘The Great Gatsby’, ‘The Name of the Rose’and, in HL, ‘And Then There Were None’. This textual/contextual study will enable them tocreate their own written piece that draws upon the contextual nuances and textual styles ofone of the texts, whilst also helping them to critically analyse a text for influences andintent.

Q: How far do you agree that Fitzgerald has created an atmosphere

of wealth and glamour?

I stron;ly aeree that the writer has created an atmosphere of wealth and elamour in the extract.
