Tennis Stars

Two Petoskey women have been selected to represent the Midwest Tennis Association in the womens 35 age division at the National

Womens Intersectional Team Event from November 15-21, 2010 at the McFarlin Tennis Center in San Antonio, Texas. The players on this team will compete against top players from 16 other sections in the United States.

Jennifer Jensen and Susie Pizzuti will team up to represent their district, Northern Michigan Tennis Association, and their section, the Midwest Tennis Association.

Jennifer Jensen has a long history of USTA tennis from juniors to adult womens divisions. As a junior she held high level Midwest and National rankings. She played #1 singles for 4 years for Petoskey High School achieving 4 All State Awards and a cumulative record of 66-6 for her high school career. Jennifer’s mother is Margaret Ruemenapp and her sisters and children and nieces and nephews carry on the long tradition of tennis in this family. Jennifer played #1 singles for Ohio University, Division 1, posting victories over schools including Notre Dame, Miami of Ohio and Western Michigan University. She obtained a national amateur ranking of # 19 between college years. She resides in Petoskey with her husband Harry Colfer MD and her 3 children, all tennis players. She is employed by Michigan Heart and Vascular as a Nurse Practitioner and is working on her Doctorate in Nursing Practice through U of M, Flint.

Susie Pizzuti also comes from a tennis family. Her mother, Shirley Osterlund, and sister, Pam Osterlund, are womens players on USTA Leagues. Her father, a fine player with many titles, was Susie’s inspiration growing up. Susie had a similar background in competitive tennis playing all 4 years for Bloomfield Hills Lahser and was State Champion in two of those years at 4 singles. She played all four years for the University of Colorado in Boulder at the 4-5 singles spot. In 1991 Susie played on the 5.0 National Womens team out of Chicago and won the title. She is a USPTA certified professional from 1989-2008 working among other places in Atlanta, Chicago and Aspen.

Elliott Bandrowski of Traverse City has seen much in his 9 young years on the planet. Elliott is currently ranked #1 in Boys 10’s in NMTA and #3 in Boys 12’s. Success is a given but what

you might not know and need to know, Elliott is # 28 in Boys 10’s in the Midwest, #220 in the Boys 12’s and last year was # 13 in the international ranking for Boys 10 and under and 8th in the nation when all was said and done.

He has come to the attention of the National Training Center in Indianapolis where National Coaches work with players, 2 per state. A player is invited to this Center based on energy, effort, passion and of course strokes. Two boys and two girls are selected each year from this elite group to attend Chris Evert’s Academy in Florida. Elliott has been invited to this National Training Center in Indianapolis, twice. He has also been privileged enough to attend the Little Mo tournament in Austin, Texas where a win in a third set tiebreaker 16-14 gave him the nod to Nationals and the rest is fast becoming history.

Elliot’s mother and father are supportive of his tennis- he could not do this otherwise. He has four tennis playing and USTA ranked, brothers and sisters.
