    1. TELEVISION. WHAT IS TELEVISION?

Television is a system of communication which broadcastsimages on motion and sound to receptors which themreproduce them so that we all can watch them.Television is a mass media of communication such as theradio, the press or the internet. It is a really powerfulaudiovisual media of communication.

The precursor of television was a system patented P. Nipkow in 1884 which split images into light dots. Theengineer Jonh Logie Baird was the first person to send images regularly in 1929 from the BBC studios. The images are taken by TV cameras with the same method as used in the camera obscura. Once there, those images or light signals were transformed into electric signals so the TV station send or transmit themthroughout different mediums to our televisions at home.

    3. TELEVISION PROGRAMATION

This is constituted by the TV spaces to be emitted within a day, a week or a season organized by thechannels. The channels programs are responsible of their own image to public eye, because as we know, there arechannels which focus on different subjects such as sports, cultural contents, cartoons, movies, sensationalistic programs and foreign or national series.

Television plays an important social rolereporting to thousands and millions people, that do not read newspapers or listen to theradio. They just receive information on thetelevision.

It is important to be informed. In this global age everything that happens affects us or can potentiallyaffect us. Something seemingly so distant as the United States presidential elections will have aconsiderable influence on the economy or international policy of our country.

The informative function of television goes beyond strictly information such as news events since wereceive other information from many other programs that put us in contact with the problems of thirdworld ecological challenges or analyse the political, economic, social and cultural reality of Spanishsociety.

    ENTERTAINMENT FUNCTION

Television entertains us. We should not give up what we like and after a day's work, we should not beashamed in finding what gratifies us such as watching a movie, a variety program, a contest, a sportingcompetition, etc. However, we need to generate criticism that seeks quality and strays away from crudeand uncouth contents. Furthermore we must be sensitive to the new advertising strategies and to theimplicit values which we are transmitted, for example the all-embracing power of money.

    LEARNING FUCTION

Television can provide new ideas, teach us how to do things and show what is right or wrong.According to recent investigations children "identified two main reasons to use the television as ameans of learning: first, to learn about themselves, and second, to learn about other things".The most dangerous thing is certainly when children use television as an accompanist and watch ithaving no idea whether or not what they are seeing is real, or if it is good or relevant. It is in thesecases when the television is called baby-sitter, because TV is performing the role of the personresponsible for the education of children at home.

Television offers a world of fantasy and imagination where not everything shown is real. It is difficult fora child to differentiate what is true and what is a lie. So yes, we can learn from TV, but we have to do itcarefully.
