3.2.2 Professor José Luis Santos, FCUP, Portugal, “New Paths in Optical Sensing”
Short CV: J. L. Santos graduated in applied physics (optics and electronics) from the University of Porto
(1983). He received his Ph.D. from the same university (1993, "Multiplexing and Signal Processing in
Fibre Optic Sensors"; research performed partially at the Physics Department of University of
Canterbury, Kent, UK). His main research interests are in the optical fiber sensing field and in optical fiber

University of Porto (FCUP) and he is also member of OSA, SPIE, and PLANETARY SOCIETY. J. L. Santos is
the Advisor of the University of Porto SPIE Student Chapter.
Summary of the talk: This talk overviewed the recent progresses both at the level of well-established
optical technologies and on the uncovered of fundamental optical science with direct impact on sensing
and measurement justifies such statement. It started with the identification of the general benefits that
result from the combination of metamaterials and optical sensing, detailing the particular but important
situation where special optical fibers are involved. Then the phenomenon of slow and fast light was
presented within the perspective of its impact in optical sensing. The identification of the factors that
determine the ultimate resolution in classical optical sensing systems was also a targeted subject of this
talk, where the breakthrough associated with the consideration of squeezed states of light in the context
of semi-classical optical sensing systems was introduced. The final part provided a glimpse of the
fascinating new world of optical sensing in the realm of quantum mechanics, where truly qualitatively
novel possibilities for measurement and sensing stand for discovery.

3.2.3 Professor J. Paulo Vilas-Boas, FADEUP, “Current challenges in retro-reflexive dual-
media (air/water) kinematics – one of the priorities of Porto Biomechanics Laboratory
(LABIOMEP)”
Short CV: J. P. Vilas-Boas is a Full Professor of Biomechanics of the University of Porto, Faculty of Sport
Head of the Porto Biomechanics Laboratory (LABIOMEP-FADEUP); Member of the Steering Group
“Swimming” of the World Commission for Science in Sports (WCSS-ICSSPE - UNESCO); Member of the
Board of the Portuguese Society of Biomechanics; Member of the Scientific Committee of the Doctoral
Courses in Sport Sciences of the University of Porto, Physiotherapy of the University of Porto and
Occupational Health and Safety of the University of Porto. He is also Member of the Direction of the
Research Unit CIF2D / FCT. He is author of more than 300 presentations to international scientific and
professional meetings, author of about 190 scientific papers published under “peer review” process, and
author and/or editor of 6 books with national or international circulation. He was Chairman of the X
International Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming, Porto 2006 and Chairman of the
XXIX International Conference on Biomechanics in Sports, ISBS’2011, Porto, Portugal.
Summary of the talk: Sports Biomechanics is both conducted internally and externally, being the second
approach much popular, mainly due to the relative easiness of the procedures involved: kinematic and
kinetic common techniques. The first being dominated by image (or light) based techniques, and by
inertial sensors, and the late by dedicated extensometry, including 6DOF force plates. However, when
water is involved this picture is radically changed, once the relatively simple external biomechanics
become rather complex and difficult: image and light based kinemetric techniques are disturbed by air
bubbles and reflexion; inertial data collection impaired by difficulties in wireless data transmission, and
extensiometric dynamometry complicated by the simple presence of water (both due to waterproofing
requirements, and water kinetic effects – hydrostatic pressure, added mass, waves, etc.). This figure is
further stressed when dual-media (air / water) conditions need to be addressed as in swimming. In this
case, differences in light refraction between air and water and surface waves are new extra problems
needing to be addressed. In this presentation it was presented and discussed the group’s history on
underwater and dualmedia kinematics in swimming, with special emphasis on the current problems
associated with light-based automatic tracking techniques, combining dry-land and underwater
procedures. Concomitantly, the new facilities of the University of Porto regarding Biomechanical research
– the new LABIOMEP – was also presented.

3.2.5 Dr. Paula Martins-Lopes, UTAD, “Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) traceability strategies:
an integrated approach”
Short CV: Paula Martins-Lopes graduated in Agriculture Engineering at the Trás-os-Montes and Alto
Douro University (UTAD), Portugal in 1996. She received her M.Sc. degree in Genetic Resources and Plant
and Forestry Breeding from the UTAD, Portugal in 1999 and her Ph.D. in Genetics from UTAD, Portugal
in 2006. The research for the M.Sc. and Ph.D. was performed in collaboration with the Cereals Department
of the Cambridge Lab, John Innes Centre, Norwich, U.K. At the present, Paula F. Martins-Lopes, is an
Assistant Professor at the Department of Genetic and Biotechnology, UTAD. She is a researcher at the
Institute of Genetics and Biotechnology/Centre of Genetics and Biotechnology-University of Trás-os-
Montes and Alto Douro (CGB-UTAD/IBB) Portugal, and has been involved with studies on food
traceability, aluminum stress and antigenotoxic effects of food using Drosophila melanogaster models.

3 book chapters, 3 abstracts published in SCI journals, 1 full-paper published in peer-reviewed journal, 7
full papers in proceedings and 97 abstracts published in national and international meetings.
Summary of the talk: The wine market is a highly competitive sector worldwide, where high quality wines
have a particular market niche. The wine’s quality is deeply influenced by the grapevine varieties used
for its production, and most of these wines have the varietal composition discriminated on the label.
Several approaches have been taken in order to develop methodologies capable of identifying the varietal
composition of commercial wines. The CGB-UTAD/IBB group is working in a multidisciplinary approach
to target both variety identification and geographical origin. For the varietal identification the group is
working on two different DNA-based strategies: (1) RealTime-PCR – through the development of an assay
to rapidly detect SNPs using HRM (High resolution melting curve) approach, allowing the differentiation
of the grapevine varieties according to their sequence variants; (2) Label free optical biosensor platforms
– through the detection of hybridization process using a label free DNA attached to optical sensor.
The differential absorption of metals from the soil has been used as indication of grape origin. In this
work, region identification will be assessed by the strontium 87Sr/86Sr isotope determination. This
approach will involve soil evaluation in the vineyards used in the experimental design followed by its
assay in wines. The development of alternative platforms for food traceability, in particular wine
traceability, is a requirement that urges to be implemented, in order to defend producers and consumers
best interest. An integrative approach may allow the development a quick and highly sensitive device
suitable for fraud or mistakes detection.

3.2.6 Dr. Sandra Mouta, Universidade do Minho, “Biological motion: Implications for action
perception and motor”
Short CV: Sandra Mouta graduated in Psychology at the Universidade do Minho in 2002. She received her
PhD in Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Sciences from Universidade do Minho in 2009. Currently,
Sandra Mouta is a Post‐Doc researcher in INESC‐Porto and Vision & Control of Action Group, Dep. de
Psicologia Bàsica, Universitat de Barcelona. Her main research interests are biological motion perception,
human motor performance and multimodal perception. Sandra Mouta is currently the PI of a project
funded by Fundação Bial entitled “Human motor (re)learning: the use of sensor information fusion”.
Summary of the talk: Environment, his or her own movement and the movement of others. It is generally
assumed that the human visual system is highly prepared to extract meaningful information from
biological motion patterns. However, almost all classical studies on biological motion perception focus
on the detection and recognition of specific patterns, actions or agents. Little is known about the
spatiotemporal processing of biological motion, the role of the different sensorial modalities and its
implication to motor planning, motor generation and interaction. Regarding biological motion, it is
known that the visual information conveyed by stimuli is the main contributor to the successful
completion of such tasks. However, sometimes, the high temporal accuracy shown in action control for
daily tasks cannot be accounted for by visual information alone. Instead, it seems to be necessary to
combine sources from different sensory modalities, action and prior knowledge. This integration of
information from different sources is evident during object interception, interaction with other agents or
movement synchronization. In this presentation we will address (1) the study and parameterization of
the visual sensorial information conveyed by biological motion; (2) how this information is combined
with other sensorial modalities; (3) and with motor and proprioceptive information.

3.2.7 Dr. Nunzio Cennamo, Department of Industrial and Information Engineering, Second
University of Naples – Italy, “Surface Plasmon Resonance in plastic optical fiber: a simple
and low cost approach to bio and chemical sensor applications”
Short CV: Nunzio Cennamo is a post-doc at the Department of Industrial and Information Engineering at
Second University of Naples, Italy. His main interest deals with the design of advanced optical sensors.
Summary of the talk: This presentation reported the fabrication and testing of different configurations of
optical sensor systems based on Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) at the interface of a liquid sample and
sandwiched structures realized starting from the exposed core of a Plastic Optical Fiber (POF). The
proposed geometries have proven to be suitable for measuring the refractive indexes of liquids whose
refractive index falls around 1.350. Furthermore, the proposed sensing head, being low cost and
relatively easy to realize. The planar gold layer and refractive index ranging from 1.330 to 1.420 are two
good factors for forthcoming bio and chemical sensors implementation.

3.2.8 Dr. Olivier Soppera, Institute of Materials Science Mulhouse (IS2M)-CNRS, Mulhouse -
France, “Laser direct write of metal oxide micro-nano-structures”
Short CV: Olivier Soppera graduated from the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Cachan and received his PhD
in polymer and photochemistry from the Université de Haute-Alsace in 2003. He is a CNRS researcher
(Institute of Materials Science Mulhouse (IS2M)-CNRS, Mulhouse - France) and co-author of 60
publications, one patent, and three book chapters.
Summary of the talk: A versatile, fast and easy route towards metal-oxide nanostructures prepared by
full-optical method, at room temperature is presented here. The concept relies on the preparation of
photosensitive metal-oxo clusters (MOC) that can be crosslinked and mineralized in a single step process,
by Deep-UV (DUV) irradiation (ArF laser emission band at 193 nm). The oxo-clusters are prepared by
complexation between metal alkoxides and methacrylic acids followed by a partial hydrolysis. These
molecular building blocks are designed to absorb DUV light and they can react from excited stated to give
rise to crosslinking reactions. Photocrosslinking of Ti, Zr and Hf oxo-clusters was investigated by means
of in situ FTIR and spectroscopic ellipsometry. In the case of Ti-oxo clusters, we demonstrate that the
material can be fully mineralized into TiO2 by DUV irradiation. A photocatalytic process involving TiO2
nanoparticles is proposed to explain the DUV mineralization process. Finally, we used DUV
interferometric lithography to illustrate nanopatterning based on these photoresists. These inorganic
photoresists open new doors towards room temperature preparation of high-resolution inorganic
nanostructures with strong interest for practical applications in electronics, optics, photonics or biology.
Place of event: INESC Porto at FCUP.

3.2.9 Dr. Jens Kobelke, IPHT-Institute of Photonic Technology, Jena – Germany, “Doped
Microstructured Fibers for nonlinear and sensor applications”
Annual Activity Report 2012-2013
13
Short CV: Dr. Jens Kobelke is a researcher of the fiber optics research department of IPHT – Jena and his
work focuses on the development and fabrication of optical specialty fibers, including micro-structured
fibers and photonic crystal fibers.
Summary of the talk: This presentation will address the fabrication techniques and characterisitics of
specialty microstructured fibers (MOFs) designed and fabricated at IPHT, Jena. The doping or
substitution of the typical matrix material silica in MOFs enables the improvement of their optical
performance and functionality. Holey cladding MOFs with extremely high Germanium doped silica (up to
36 mol% GeO2) and high index multi-component glass (MCG) in the core center were prepared for
nonlinear applications. Stack-and-Draw technique was applied for preform preparation. The radial GeO_2
profile of the core rod was graded to manage the large viscosity and thermal expansion differences
between core material and silica holey cladding. In the case of MCG the inner core rod was overcladded
with a small silica clad.
A further discussed fiber design is a hollow core fiber with triplicated Germanium doped triangular cores.
The cores are uniformly doped with 5 mol% GeO2 and 1 mol% P2O5. A special preparation technique was
used. The core material was doped in 4 layers by MCVD in a substrate tube of Heraeus Suprasil F300. The
deposited tube was grinded and polished in azimuthal positions over 120°. The triangular shaped tube
was fitted with a pressure control system and drawn to a capillary fiber. The hole diameter was
controlled by overpresssure to be about 20 µm. The formation of the three Germanium doped cores was
adjusted by the fiber drawing parameters. The shift of the outer cross-sectional profile shifts from
triangular to circular shape by application of high drawing temperature. Contrary, the circular deposited
germanium doped layer of the triangular preform tends to form triangular cores by non-radial flow
components surrounding a circular central capillary.
