3. Details of Chapter activities in the year 2016

3.1 Organization of regular meetings during school year

These meetings aimed at the interaction between student chapter members and the discus-sion of the activities that the chapter proposed to organize along the year. The Chapter organized several meetings along the year, more or less once per month. The average of student members present in the meetings was around 80%.

3.2 Scientific meetings

3.2.1 25th Scientific Meeting - Professor Enrique Solano, University of the Basque Country, Bilbao, Spain, “Ultrastrong coupling regime of the quantum Rabi model”

Short CV: Prof. Enrique Solano is Ikerbasque Professor at the University of the Basque Coun-

try (Bilbao, Spain) since May 2008. He previously worked during several years at Max-Planck

Institute for Quantum Optics (Garching, Germany) and at Ludwig-Maximilian University (Mu-

nich, Germany). He is affiliate researcher at Institute for Quantum Computing (Waterloo,

Canada) and was Physics Professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (Lima, Peru).

He has published more than 160 articles (2 Nature, 2 Nature Physics, 2 Nature Communica-

tions, 3 Physical Review X, 45 Physical Review Letters, 50 Physical Review A/B, among others)

in quantum optics, quantum information, superconducting circuits, and quantum biomi-

metics. Prof. Solano is currently the director of the research group "Quantum Technologies

for Information Science (QUTIS)", www.qutisgroup.com, where he develops pioneering re-

search in interdisciplinary fields involving quantum information, quantum optics, quantum

technologies, superconducting circuits, quantum memristors, quantum biomimetics, quan-

tum machine learning and quantum artificial life.

Summary of the talk: The talk was focused in the quantum Rabi model (QRM), which is the

simplest fully-quantized light-matter interaction. With a pedagogical and historical ap-

proach, different physical aspects of the QRM were reviewed including the ultrastrong cou-

pling (USC) and deep strong coupling (DSC) regimes. Given the difficulty or impossibility of

observing these extreme interaction regimes in natural systems, it was proposed new ad-

vances on how to implement quantum simulations of the QRM in different quantum plat-

forms, where the USC and DSC physics can be observed.

3.2.2 26th Scientific Meeting - Dr. Bahram Javidi, University of Connecticut, Storrs, USA, “Advances in Three Dimensional Sensing, Visualization, and Display”

Short CV: Bahram Javidi is The Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor at University of

Connecticut. His research interests are in transformative approaches to optical imaging sci-

ences, including imaging at nano scales. Dr. Javidi has been named a Fellow of eight scien-

tific societies, including the IEEE, American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering,

Optical Society (OSA), European Optical Society (EOS), and the SPIE. In 2008, he was named

a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellow. He is recognized by nine best paper awards

from IEEE, OSA, EOS, and SPIE. Dr. Javidi is the recipient of various honors, including the

IEEE Donald G. Fink Prize Paper Award (2008), George Washington University’s Distin-

guished Alumni Scholar Award (2010), Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Humboldt

Prize for outstanding U.S. scientists (2007), SPIE’s Technology Achievement Award (2008),

SPIE’s Dennis Gabor Award in Diffractive Wave Technologies (2005), and the IEEE Photonics

Society’s Distinguished Lecturer Award (2003 and 2004). Early in his career, he was named

a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator, and received an Engineering

Foundation and an IEEE Faculty Initiation Award. In 2003, the National Academy of Engi-

neering selected him as one of the nation’s top engineers aged 30-45 to present his research

at the sixth German-American Frontiers of Engineering Symposium. He has 900 publica-

tions, including nine books, 54 book chapters, 370 peer reviewed journal articles, 400 con-

ference proceedings, and 130 plenary addresses, keynote addresses and invited conference

papers. His papers have appeared in the Proceedings of the IEEE Journal, Journal of the

Royal Society, Physics Today and Nature. His papers have been cited 29000 times [h-in-

dex=77] according to Google Scholar. He has served as a member of the Editorial Board of

the Proceedings of the IEEE Journal (ranked number one among all EE journals and transac-

tions), member of the Advisory Board of the IEEE Photonics Journal, and on the Board of

Directors of SPIE.

Summary of the talk: Three-dimensional (3-D) imaging systems are considered for mass

markets in entertainment and communication. Three-dimensionality is considered an added

benefit in imaging devices, and the search for an optimum 3D imaging and display technique

is an important research area. 3D monitors should provide the observers with different per-

spectives of a 3D scene by simply varying the head position. In this seminar, we present an

overview of our work on multi view imaging systems for 3D sensing, visualization, and dis-

play. 3D imaging systems promise a new paradigm in communications, including 3D TV, 3D

cinema, 3D displays for mobile phones, education, communication, and entertainment. The

seminar will address some of the limitations of 3D integral imaging systems, including lim-

ited depth of field, the pseudoscopic-to-orthoscopic conversion, production of 3D images

with continuous relief, and the limited range of viewing angles of 3D imaging systems. The-

oretical and experimental results will be presented, and various applications and technical

challenges of integral imaging will be discussed.

3.2.3 Let’s Talk About Science! (3rd Edition)

An afternoon dedicated to Science, where we had the pleasure to welcome the SPIE Invited

Lecturer, Professor Reuven Gordon, from the University of Victoria, Canada, who gave a talk

about “Nano-opto-bio-mechanics: listening to single proteins with light”. Also joining us was

Professor Nuno Santos from the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences, FCUP, that

talked about the ESPRESSO project. A different perspective was brought by Dr. Sofia Mi-

guens, a professor and philosopher at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto that

took us on a debate on personal identity.

Professor Reuven Gordon, from the University of Victoria, Canada, “Nano-Opto-

Bio-Mechanics: listening to single proteins with light”

Short CV: Reuven Gordon is the Canada Research Chair in Nanoplasmonics and a Professor

in ECE, University of Victoria (Canada). He has over 135 papers (7 invited), 4 book chapters,

3 patents (+4 applications). His recent distinctions include promotion to OSA Fellow, the

Craigdarroch Silver Medal, an AGAUR Visiting Professorship and an Accelerate BC Industry.

Summary of the talk: Nanoparticles in the single digit nanometer range can be easily isolated

and studied with low optical powers using nanoaperture tweezers. We have studied individ-

ual proteins and their interactions with small molecules, DNA and antibodies. We have also

pioneered a new way to “listen” to the vibrations of nanoparticles in the 100 GHz – 1 THz

range; the approach is called extraordinary acoustic Raman (EAR). EAR gives unprecedented

low frequency spectra of individual proteins in solution, allowing for identification and anal-

ysis, as well as probing their role in biological functions.

Prof. Nuno Santos, Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences, FCUP, “The

ESPRESSO project: finding other worlds”

Short CV: Nuno C. Santos is a researcher at the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sci-

ences/CAUP and Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of FCUP.

In 2009 he was awarded a Starting Grant by the European Research Council that allowed

him to set up a team working on the search for extrasolar planets. He is the author of over

250 scientific papers in international journals. In 2010 he was awarded the Viktor Ambart-

sumian International Prize for his study of different stellar astrophysics aspects of stars

with orbiting planets.

Summary of the talk: ESPRESSO, the Echelle SPectrograph for Rocky Exoplanets and Stable

Spectroscopic Observations, will be the next VLT high resolution spectrograph. With its

unique technological capabilities, ESPRESSO will allow to explore new frontiers in most do-

mains of astrophysics that require precision and sensitivity. The main scientific drivers of

ESPRESSO are the search and characterization of rocky exoplanets in the habitable zone of

quiet, nearby G to M-dwarfs and the analysis of the variability of fundamental physical con-

stants.

Sofia Miguens, Department of Philosophy and Institute of Philosophy, University

of Porto, Portugal, " Thinking about Ourselves as Being-in-the-World”

Short CV: Sofia Miguens is a Professor at the Department of Philosophy of the University of

Porto. She was a Visiting scholar at New York University (Fall 2000), a Visiting Research

Fellow at Institut Jean Nicod-Paris (2007-2008) and a Visiting Scholar at the University of

Sydney – Australia (2013).

She is author of six books (Uma Teoria Fisicalista do Conteúdo e da Consciência – D. Dennett

e os debates da filosofia da mente, 2002; Racionalidade, 2004; Filosofia da Linguagem – uma

introdução (2007); Será que a minha mente está dentro da minha cabeça? (2008);

Compreender a Mente e o Conhecimento (2009); John McDowell – uma análise a partir da

filosofia moral (2014). She is editor of several others, among them Aparência e Realidade

(2010), Aspectos do Juízo (2011), Acção e Ética (2011), Consciousness and Subjectivity

(2012), Conversations on Human Action and Practical Rationality (2013), Pre-Reflective Con-

sciouness – Sartre and Conemporary Philosophy of MInd (London, Routledge, 2016). She has

published numerous articles, review articles and book chapters in Portuguese, English and

French on several topics in philosophy of mind and language; epistemology and cognitive

science; moral and political philosophy and history of 20th century philosophy (phenome-

nology and analytic philosophy).

She was President of the Portuguese Philosophical Association (Sociedade Portuguesa de

Filosofia, SPF) (2004-2006) and Head of the Philosophy Department at FLUP (2008-2010).

She has been a member of the Board of the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Porto

since 2007 (2007-2008) (2008-2010) (2010-2014). She is the Founder and Principal Investi-

gator of MLAG (Mind, Language and Action Group), a research group of the Institute of Phi-

losophy of Porto (http://mlag.up.pt).

Summary of the talk: In this talk I compare two ways our ‘being-in-the–world’ is conceived

of in current debates of personal identity. I will focus on British philosophers Derek Parfit

and Paul Snowdon. They have contrasting positions on personal identity: one is neo-

Lockean, the other animalist. I will be investigating the nature and value of our intuitions in

these matters.

3.3.1 SPIE Photonics West 2016

Ana Rita Ribeiro participated in Photonics West 2016. She attended the leadership work-shop, representing the UP SPIE Student Chapter. She won the Best Oral Presentation for work at SPIE Photonics West Conference 9764 Complex Light and Optical Forces.

3.3.2 Optics and Photonics 2016

Ricardo Melo André participated in Optics and Photonics 2016. He attended the leadership workshop, representing the UP SPIE Student Chapter.

3.4 Organization of activities for undergraduate and graduate students

3.4.1 Participation in “Open Days 2016” to schools

Summary: The Faculty of Science of University of Porto (FCUP) hosts the “Open Days” to

schools. This initiative is aimed at secondary school students, especially those who are in

the process of vocational guidance. These students had the opportunity to take a close look

at a group of activities divided into FCUP's several knowledge areas, participating in guided

tours to the facilities of the different departments and research centers. The goal is to pro-

vide students with a direct contact with the FCUP training opportunities and information on

the professional outputs given by graduations and master degrees. The “Open Days” are

performed during two days, where tours to the various laboratories of the Faculty are orga-

nized.

The visits are organized by area and require prior registration in each area who are inter-

ested in visiting [Biology, Physics and Astronomy, Geosciences, Environment and Spatial

Planning (Geology, Environment, Geographic Engineering, Food Engineering, Agricultural En-

gineering, Landscape Architecture); Computing, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biochemistry].

All students and teachers have informational materials about the courses available at FCUP.

This activity aims to set up an informal table in the department stand with SPIE promotional

materials, handouts, and membership applications during the event.

The FCUP Open Days took place in February 18th and 19th. The UP SPIE Student Chapter was

represented by its members through a series of outreach activities closely related to the

research areas of INESC Porto.

3.5 Other events:

3.5.1 Visit to exhibition Lux Mirabilis, Universidade do Porto / Museu de Ciência in partnership with Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis

On March 16th, the Chapter arranged a visit to the exhibition Lux Mirabilis, organized by the Museu da Ciência da Universidade do Porto, in partnership with the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis in the context of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies. The exhibition explored the topics: LIGHT IN NATURE, THE SYMBOLIC LIGHT, PRODUCING LIGHT; THE SCIENCE OF LIGHT & LIGHT APPLIED TO SCIENCE; LIGHT, IMAGE & VISION. Participated in this event approximately 20 people participated in this event.

3.5.2 Co-organization of SYFY Scientific Review

The Department of Physics and Astronomy of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, in collaboration with INESC TEC and the UP SPIE Student Chapter, has carried out the second edition of Science Fiction called “SYFY Scientific Review”. The aim of the event was to promote science fiction masterpieces. During the first day, to introduce the event, 3 sci-ence fiction movies chosen by the UP student community were shown. The second day was filled with several talks under the theme of this year – “Artificial Intelligence”. Finally, the event ended with a debate featuring guests from various areas related with the theme “Ar-tificial Intelligence: Morality and Ethic”.

O Departamento de Física e de Astronomia da FCUP em colaboração com o INESC TEC irá

realizar a segunda semana da Ficção Cientifica chamada “SYFY Scientific Review” onde

pretende mostrar um dia de obras primas de ficção cientifica. Na página “Dia de Cinema”

são apresentados os filmes escolhidos e sugeridos pela comunidade jovem da UP. O segundo

dia terá palestras sobre temas científicos diversos realçando o tema de este ano - “Inteligência

Artificial”. Finalmente haverá um debate com convidados em diversas áreas relacionadas

com o tema Inteligência Artificial: Moralidade e Ética.

Há uma dependência entre a ciência transmitida nas universidades e a ficção científica a

nível cinematográfico ou literário. Vários cientistas e investigadores reconhecem que a ficção

científica tem um papel muito importante no desencadeamento da imaginação sobre o que é

possível desenvolver na ciência atual ou mesmo na criação de novas necessidades comerciais.

Por outro lado, os autores de ficção são inspirados pelos trabalhos desenvolvidos nestas áreas

científicas, sendo apoiados muitas vezes por dados científicos que sustentam uma imaginação

ficcional científica. Tal como o método científico, a ficção científica pretende fornecer uma

abordagem para a compreensão do universo em que vivemos.

A ficção científica contempla as áreas de cinema e literatura do fantástico mas também

explora recursos nos mais diversos campos desde as ciências exatas como a física, química e

biologia até às novas engenharias. Aqueles que criam e estudam ficção científica devem

possuir uma formação científica ou tecnológica relevante, bem como ter um vasto

conhecimento das implicações sociais, históricas, económicas entre outras sobre a

comunidade em geral.

Assume-se um princípio de que a ficção científica não é baseada na realidade, portanto, não

factual. Contudo, este conceito é aplicado na ciência quando novas descobertas são feitas

sendo que em alguns casos, a ficção científica é provada como um facto. Todos já

presenciamos a evolução das histórias de ficção científica consoante a evolução da ciência e

cada vez mais são pedidos conselhos ou sugestões aos cientistas para a história de ficção

apresentar uma maior realidade e por isso ser ainda mais espetacular. Logo nem tudo o que

aparece em ficção cientifica se trata de um facto não cientifico ou pelo menos parte dele.

3.5.3 JEFFE 2016 – Jornadas de Engenharia Física e Física Experimental

The 1st Workshop on Engineering Physics and Experimental Physics (“1as Jornadas de Engen-

haria Física e Física Experimental”), held in the department of Physics and Astronomy, Fac-

ulty of Sciences of the University of Porto. This workshop had the mission to disseminate

the current challenges and outlook in the areas of Engineering Physics and Experimental

Physics, offering testimonies from Directors of the Integrated Research Institutes of DFA-

FCUP, including INESC TEC and IFIMUP, and providing scientific talks from Ph.D. students

and flash presentations from Master students from those centers. Moreover, some examples

of successful professionals in various fields of Engineering Physics were presented. Finally,

during the coffee break, a poster session engaging postgraduate students occurred.

The presence of these participants offered unique opportunities for students to contact with

the research and professional world. This event was of utmost importance especially for the

younger ones since it was a unique opportunity to realize the full extent of the universe of

Engineering Physics and Experimental Physics. The event also allowed Professors/Researchers

and Staff to acquaint themselves with the state-of-the-art of the research developed at DFA-

FCUP. Finally, this was an opportunity for socialization between all members of the DFA-

FCUP.

The official website was maintained (http://upspiechapter.inescporto.pt/) and it has been regularly updated about the activities that the University of Porto SPIE Student Chapter has developing during the year.

The official Facebook has been updated frequently aiming that our activities reach people from all over the world.

4. Details of planned activities for the future

Activities proposed by the University of Porto SPIE Student Chapter for the year 2016:

• Organization of the Fourth Edition of ‘Let’s talk about science’

With this initiative the Chapter aims to promote a special scientific meeting with the SPIE

invited speaker and other lecturers invited by the Chapter.

Venue: Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto

Date: To be announced

• Organization of regular meetings during the school year

The main goal of these meetings are the interaction among the student chapter members,

as well as the discussion of activities that the chapter proposes to organize along the year.


Date: Bimonthly

• Scientific meetings

The objective of these activities is to promote scientific meetings between students (from

undergraduate to graduate students) and research scientists, with researchers from indus-

try or academia, enabling an open debate and the assessment of new concepts, technologies

and applications in the domain of optical technology, as well as the establishment of new

collaborations and networks.


Date: During the year 2017 (whenever possible)

• Lab meetings with flash presentations

Create a monthly meeting where, students (undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and post-doc-

toral) discuss their work, ask questions and have to present their work in a succinct manner

(5-10min). In these meetings, a senior researcher would also make a small presentation (15-

20min) about research in their group. Students and researchers that attend conferences will

also be invited to present what they found the most interesting and new at the conference.

• Scientific workshops

Organization of workshops where an experienced researcher talks about a specific aspect

of research. Topics such as the act of reviewing a paper for a journal, writing a paper, pre-

paring a topical review, preparing a poster, preparing a presentation, etc.

• Co-organization of a Topical Meeting of the European Optical Society

An EOS topical meeting will be organized at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science,

University of Porto by the Portuguese optical society and INESC TEC. The exact topic is still

to be determined but will revolve around optical sensors. The chapter will help with the

organization of this meeting.

• (4th) Participation in “Open Days” to schools

The Faculty of Science of University of Porto (FCUP) hosts the “Open Days” for schools. This

formal exchange of views, where it is possible to question, experiment and participate. The

Science, Teaching and Innovation Display at the U. Porto is directed to high school students

that are considering their future but also for all those interested in knowledge (scientific,

technological, humanistic and artistic). This fair is also an ideal opportunity to understand

the impact that the University of Porto has in our society and in the countries development.

This activity aims to set up an informal table in the department stand of “Mostra de Ciência”

with SPIE promotional materials, handouts, and membership applications during the event.

Venue: Pavilhão Rosa Mota - Porto.
