Systemic Financial RiskWilliam Leiss

An analysis of the current financial crisis from a risk management perspective.

In the past year, the world has experienced how unsound economic practices can disrupt global economic and social order. Today’s volatile global financial situation highlights the importance of managing risk and the consequences of poor decision-making. It reveals an underlying paradox of risk management: the better we become at assessing risks, the more we feel comfortable taking them.

Using the current financial crisis as a case study, renowned risk expert William Leiss engages with the new concept of “systemic risk” — risk so great that recovery from its negative consequences may prove impossible. His risk-centred analysis of the lead-up to the crisis reveals the practices that brought it about and how it became common practice to use limited risk assessments as a justification to gamble huge sums of money on unsound economic policies.

In order to limit future catastrophes, Leiss recommends international cooperation to manage systemic risks. He believes that, failing this, humanity could be susceptible to a dangerous nexus of global disasters that would threaten human civilization as we know it.

William Leiss has been a professor at seven Canadian universities: Simon Fraser, Calgary, Regina, York, Toronto, Queen’s, and Ottawa. He is the author or co-author of eight previous books, including Mad Cows and Mother’s Milk (McGill-Queen’s, 2004) and In the Chamber of Risks (McGill-Queen’s, 2001). For the past twenty years he has been a frequent consultant to government agencies and the private sector on risk management issues.

The complete and unabridged memoirs of Sofia Tolstaya, the wife of Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy.

Nearly 150 years after the publication of War and Peace and 100 years after his death, Leo Tolstoy continues to be regarded as one of the world’s most accomplished novelists. Historically, little attention has been paid to his wife Sofia Andreevna Tolstaya. Acting in the capacity of literary assistant, translator, transcriber, and editor, she played an integral part in the development of Tolstoy’s legacy. Her complete and unabridged memoirs, available in English for the first time, provide a unique and intimate portrait of one of the greatest literary minds of all time.

Sofia began writing My Life in 1904, starting with her memories of childhood. Her story takes us from the early years of her marriage to Tolstoy through the writing of War and Peace and Anna Karenina and into the first year of the twentieth century. Her remarkable narrative reveals the significant contributions Tolstaya made to her husband’s career and sheds new light on a beloved literary icon.

Andrew Donskov is professor of Slavic Studies at the University of Ottawa. He has authored or edited a number of books, including Leo Tolstoy and the Canadian Doukhobors: An Historic Relationship (Carleton University Centre for Research on Canadian-Russian Relations, 2005).

John Woodsworth is a research assistant with the Slavic Research Group at the University of Ottawa. He has been a translator for more than 40 years.

Arkadi Klioutchanski is a doctoral student in the Department of Slavic Languages & Literatures at the University of Toronto.

A collection of literary criticism devoted to exploring postmodernism in Canadian writing.

It would be difficult to exaggerate the worldwide impact of postmodernism on the fields of cultural production and the social sciences over the last quarter century—even if the concept has been understood in various, even contradictory, ways. An interest in postmodernism and postmodernity has been especially strong in Canada, in part thanks to the country’s non-monolithic approach to history and its multicultural understanding of nationalism, which seems to align with the decentralized, plural, and open-ended pursuit of truth as a multiple possibility as outlined by Jean-François Lyotard. In fact, long before Lyotard published his influential work The Postmodern Condition in 1979, Canadian writers and critics were employing the term to describe a new kind of writing.

RE: Reading the Postmodern marks a first cautious step toward a history of Canadian postmodernism, exploring the development of the idea of the postmodern and debates about its meaning and its applicability to various genres of Canadian writing, and charting its decline in recent years as a favoured critical trope.

The first extended study of Jamaican dancehall music and performance culture.

DanceHall combines geography, performance studies, and cultural studies to examine performance culture across the Black Atlantic. Combining the rhythms of reggae, digital sounds, and rapid-fire DJ lyrics, dancehall music was popularized in Jamaica during the later part of the last century by artists such as Shabba Ranks and Shaggy. Sonjah Stanley Niaah relates how dancehall emerged from Kingston’s ghettos, giving its performance culture and spaces a distinct identity. She reveals how dancehall’s networks, practices, institutions, and rituals link it to other musical styles, making it part of a legacy that reaches from West Indian plantations and early negro churches to Chicago’s taxi-dance halls and Manhattan’s ballrooms. DanceHall stretches across the Black Atlantic to produce its detailed portrait of dancehall in its local, regional, and transnational performance spaces.

Une histoire du racisme dans le système juridique du Canada

Malgré l’ouverture proclamée des Canadiens face à la diversité ethnique et culturelle, l’histoire canadienne n’en est pas moins marquée par la discrimination systématique. De la couleur des lois expose la ténacité juridique de cette discrimination par l’entremise d’un examen de six arrêts judiciaires déterminants entre 1900 et 1950 qui démontrent comment le système juridique canadien fut complice de la discrimination raciale. Les cas retenus témoignent des diverses façons dont le racisme a opéré dans les différents environnements juridiques du Canada. De la couleur des lois illustre l’ambiguïté opérationnelle ainsi que l’étonnante et sournoise persévérance du racisme à l’œuvre dans le système juridique canadien.

Constance Backhouse est professeure à la section de common law de la Faculté de droit de l’Université d’Ottawa. Elle est l’auteure de plusieurs livres dont Carnal Crimes: Sexual Assault Law in Canada, 1900–1975 (Irwin Law, 2008).

An exploration of the complex cultural identities found throughout the Americas.

Le transculturalisme constitue une nouvelle façon de concevoir les cultures, c’est-à-dire non plus comme des îlots distincts, mais plutôt comme des réseaux interactifs. Les identités transculturelles abondent particulièrement dans les Amériques, par exemple les Chicanos, les Franco-Ontariens, les Créoles et les immigrants de deuxième et de troisième génération. Amériques transculturelles se penche sur ces identités qui se construisent au carrefour de la similitude et de la différence.

Transculturalism is a new way of viewing culture that sees cultures not as separate islands but as connected and interacting webs. The Americas in particular offer many examples of transcultural identities: Chicanos, Franco-Ontarians, Creoles, and second and third generation immigrants. Transcultural Americas explores these identities that create themselves in a space between sameness and difference.

Engendering GenreThe Works of Margaret Atwood Reingard M. Nischik

A study of the relationship between gender and genre in the works of Margaret Atwood.

In Engendering Genre, Reingard M. Nischik approaches Atwood’s oeuvre by genre, exploring how she has developed these genres to be gender sensitive in both their content and form. Nischik argues that gender and genre converge in Atwood’s writing to critique the intrinsically gender-biased designs of traditional genres. This Atwoodian combination blurs and blends the boundaries of conventional genres, exploring them in new ways. The book concludes with an interview with Margaret Atwood on her career.

Reingard M. Nischik is chair of North American Literature at the University of Constance, Germany. She is the author or editor of more than 25 books, including Margaret Atwood: Works and Impact (Anansi, 2002), which won the Margaret Atwood Society Best Book Award.
