Requirements for Admission to Biology: Completion of 24 hours Attain a C or better in BIO 201 & 202

University Studies Tips: Strongly recommended for 1st Year Students: BIO 201 & 202, CHM 101

& 102, MAT course for future prerequisites (students should be taking 2 lab sciences per semester).

Suggests to complete foreign language and composition requirements within the first year

Rec. BIO 335 - Genetics and BIO 366 - Ecology in the second year. B.S. degree requires MAT 151, B.A. degree does not require math MAT 151 for major – MAT 161 for grad school. Chemistry minor is 2 courses shy with B.S. degree Take STT 215 before BIO 366 US Completed in Major:

o Mathematics and Statisticso Scientific Approaches to the Natural Worldo Cluster: Modeling o Writing Intensive: BIOL 325 or 345, BIOL 366 (6 hours)o Information Literacy: BIO 495o Quantitative and Logical: CHM 101

MBY majors: BIO 190 (BIO of the Sea) will NOT help them with the MBY major requirements.

MBY majors: Prefer BIO 366 be taken before BIO 335 2/8/2018

Take STT 215 before BIO 366

**Secondary Science licensure student should first complete the B.A. in BIO and then apply for the M.A.T. program – it will only take the student 1 year to complete the Master’s degree AND be certified to teach (BA as example because fewer hours than a BS). If a BS degree, there is less pay earned in school systems compared to a Master’s degree.

Changes for 2016-2017Students will need a C or better in CHM 102 to move to CHM 211Students will need a C or better in CHM 211 to move to CHM 212

Specific Recommendations for Majors: B.A. Chemistry

o Strongly encouraged to declare a minor based on student interest o One 300 level lab course is required for this majoro Elective areas: Environmental CHM, Marine CHM, Industrial CHM,

and Pre-Med Scienceso Bioethics, Sociology, and Psychology courses are always encouragedo BA students need an addition WI course (AIL cat recommended)

B.S. Chemistry (All degrees)o Dr. Seaton - students should have the option to take CHML 312 OR

CHML 365 but it is not updated in the catalogue at this time.o CHM 101 courses are available based on lab seats – not much

flexibility.o Advise students to go straight into MAT 161 based on placement

Advising Tips:Students interested in the Communication Studies pre-major/major should take CSC 105 (MIS 313 (213) can be substituted for CSC 105) and COM 101 within the first year and COM 105 their second semester. (COM 105 and PRE COM are prerequisites for COM 200.) COM 220 is also rec. in their 1st semester – it is only offered in the Fall now.

COM 104 in University Studies is NOT recommended for students interested in Communication Studies as a major. Better suggestions are COM 160 & 220 (in University Studies) or COM 101. Only offered in spring.

If COM 105 has closed before a student is able to register for it, the student contacts the COM 105 professor. Students are admitted by seniority.

Notes on COM 200: CSC 105 Pre/CO req. Students must have COM 200 by 2nd

semester soph. year. For exceptions Tammy said contact her with student 850 #

COM 220 is only offered in the Fall now. Students can register for communication studies courses at the 100/200

level that are not restricted. (Tell students to watch the computer as course restrictions may be lifted; closer to the start of the semester)

It is recommended that students not take 300/400 level courses until they have completed COM 200 as the instructors base those courses on the knowledge students gained from COM 200.

The department has asked that UC not send students there for advising during pre-reg or after. They will advise once they are declared PCOM

Advising Tips:Concentrations: Systems, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Digital Arts, Statistics and Neuroscience (2015). (Digital Arts works with technology and programming not animation – that is ART)

Programming is an important part of computer science. Problem solving and mathematics are even bigger parts of major.

Start MAT early. Start in the major early – CSC 131 requires MAT 111 as a pre-req. and can be

taken in the freshman year. Take CSC 231 with CSC 133 in the semester immediately following CSC 131 CSC 112 is a great elective class for other majors such as Business, Science

and any other major that would be interested in learning a little programming.

Advising Tips:FST majors now have a quota system. They take a certain number of students a year and accept them solely based on their FST 200 grade. (if there are 60 spots, the top 60 “grades” get in) Dave said that while officially the B+ grade guarantee is no longer the rule – that as the chair he said “a student with a B+ is certain to get into the major. That won’t change unless enrollments soar. For the last two years every student with a C in FST 200 has gotten into the major.”6.1.2016

                       • FST 200: no pre-requisite - anyone can take – even if not student’s major (AIL CAT US)

FST 200 can now be repeated. If a student earns a C- or below and it prevented them from being accepted into the major – they can repeat it for another chance at the major.

• FST 201 – is restricted to PFST and FST majors: freshmen can’t take it. However, students who have declared PFST major may take FST 201 while taking FST 200.

If currently in FST 200, enroll in FST 205 next. If students are not admitted to the major (did not make the grade cut-off) students will be removed from the course.

Students interested in exploring film can take FST 110 and 210 which could for US requirements. AIL category. FST 210 will count for FST elective credit in the major.

Encourage a minor in any area

Most FST have wait lists. Check your email often. If a spot opens you must register within 24 hours or offered to another student.

earth: (1) the physical characteristics and processes of the earth's surface and atmosphere; (2) the activities of people that have modified the natural landscape; and (3) the order and the disorder of cultural landscapes. Tools of the physical, biological and social sciences are used to analyze these varied phenomena.

Take GGY 130, 140 (most important) also 180, 181 in first few semesters. GGY 140 Human Geography will be offered once per year in the fall –and will be

offered only online after Fall 2016. Any MAT to fulfill US requirements, but the major requires GGY 222 (STT 215

counts but they prefer GGY 222) Also a Quantitative and Logical course. Department says it’s helpful to start/finish language requirement the first year. Good double major with EVS (additional 24 credit hours)

*(Geographic Information Systems Certificate is not being offered any more. It has been replaced by the Geospatial Technologies minor)

Geology is the study of the Earth through applications of basic scientific principles to Earth processes and materials. Geologic studies embrace all parts of the Earth from its deep interior to its surface including the continents, oceans, ocean floor and atmosphere. Geology is unique among the natural sciences because it deals with enormously long periods of time, and must place the events that formed and modified the Earth over the last 4.5 billion years into proper chronological order to interpret past events in Earth history and to predict future events. This search for understanding of the Earth's past, present and future requires insight, intuition, creativity, and a solid grasp of basic physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics…. See catalogue

GLY 101 and CHM 101 first Geology B.S. - Consider double major or minor with EVS, PHY, CHM, BIO, and

MBY. Hours required for the major decreased from 74 to 64-66. Geology: Take GLY 101 in the first year, preferable the first semester. If C+

or lower in GLY 101, students may want to take GLY 205 in spring for additional foundation for GLY 201 in fall of year 2.

Two options: Academic – preparation for graduate studies. Lower math requirement from 161-162 to 151-152. Professional – students intending to enter job market after graduation and intend to pursue licensure as a professional geologist. Lower math requirement from 161-162 to 111-112 or 115

Minor – Geospatial Technologies – technique minor for students interested in mapping and geospatial technologies – compliments many other disciplines, e.g., EVS, PHY, CHM

If students don’t do well in GLY 101, rec. taking GLY 205 Students need MAT 111 & 112 or 115 if choosing the MAT 151-152

Advising Tips: Geology B.A. has been changed to “Geosciences” B.A. – much more flexible

degree and complements EVS, PHY, MBY – consider double major or GLY minor with these degrees – provides more depth and practical applications. Modernization of the degree consistent with changes in the field. Four areas of concentration: Solid Earth Materials; Processes; Gas/Liquid/ Earth History

Great for double-majoring, particularly for MBY, OCN, CHM, PHY, EVS or any liberal arts/teaching major. (The department is flexible for double majors and suggests sending interested students their way).

Geoscience BA Math: STT 215 will also fulfill the University Studies Math requirement (in addition to MAT 111 and 115)

Geoscience BA recommendation: Try to take GLY 101,120 or GGY 130 in the first semester, and GLY 205 in spring, since it’s only offered in spring, then GLY 132 in fall of second year.

Recommend 1st year: PHY 101, or PHY 105 or CHM 101 (based on interest however CHM is a pre-req. for upper level courses)

Students are allowed to pursue double or triple concentrations within the major The requirements include:

o A language requirement (202 level) Start ASAP (If the student completes the FLL course while studying abroad in a 3rd world country (e.g. SPN 202) they will receive the appropriate language credit.)

o An international experience requirement any 3 credit study abroad course will count (e.g. spring break trips)

The Globalization concentration is the most popular concentration If students want the Political awareness course they are encouraged to take PLS

220 or INT 200. Advisors can use the International Studies Planning and Advising Form. Advisors can use the International Studies website which has the CORE

COURSES and UPCOMING COURSES which is updated each semester

RECOMMENDATIONS: Fulfill FLL requirements early (ASL will not fulfill the INT FLL requirement.)

However students can take INTERNATIONAL (Non-American) SIGN LANGUAGE at another institution and/or while they are studying abroad and receive language credit.)

If a student takes a FLL (e.g. Chinese 101 & 102) they must also take one more (or another) language course to fulfill the FLL (202 level) requirement.

Take INT 105 as soon as possible and then determine the area of concentration. This will help course selection.

INT 200 is being offered for 1st year and transfer students who are considering the major. INT 200 is now both HPA and WI and offered every semester.

Students should take courses that will count in the major and/or their double major/minors. At this time there are no restrictions for double dipping (or triple dipping).

Concentrations: Latin American , Africa; Arts & Literature; Environment; Globalization; Asia; Middle East; and Europe. There is also a North American concentration, but only for international/foreign students.

Minors Latin American Studies, European Studies, Africana Studies No specified Math requirement International experience is required. Ideally that experience would take place

abroad, however if financial or other limitations exist, the student is encouraged to contact Dr. Berg.  Military service abroad can qualify, but students would need to complete a DIS with Dr. Berg.

Any student who is considering THR should be strongly encouraged to meet Mr. Thomas Salzman (chair) ASAP so he can help with their degree options and class choices.

Interested students do not have to audition for the major and/or submit a portfolio. Have students declare the major ASAP.

Contact THR admin Susan Wilder about auditions or working in technical positions for productions. (Any UNCW enrolled student can audition and/or work on the Theater sets; they do not have to major/minor in THR.)

There are three options in theatre – Performance (acting) and Design Technology (stage design, sound production and lighting design etc.) and “Customized Option”(which replaces the General Theatre major)

Classes fill up based on seniority THR 121 counts for US, but not counted toward the THR major. Encourage prospective THR majors to take THR 110 and 165 first year. They

can also take a new core requirement THR 125 in Freshman or sophomore year.

THR 165 is no longer a pre-requisite for THR 231. Students can take THR 165 and THR 231 simultaneously (this is not reflected in the catalog yet but still encourage students). We also recommend for “performance option” students that they take THR 301 Physical & Vocal Expression during Fall Sophomore year.

Tessier. Students can choose to CLEP to meet the language requirement German can be recommended for Business students Placement test scores are locked into Banner for one year. Retaking the test

within a year time frame will not affect the score. After the one year period is over, a student can retake the test and that new score will replace the previous score in Banner.

World Language Exchange – FLL code in SeaNet. Distance learning classes (not online) Work with Dr. Burt. No additional tuition cost. These courses will fulfill the University Studies. (grades are not calculated into UNCW GPA)

NEW MINOR: Japanese (Yoko Kano) The chair can waive US FLL req. for native speakers. Those who completed

their secondary education in their native language. Students of foreign origin who grew up in the US and attended HS here are considered “heritage speakers” and would not be waived from the req. The rationale is that native speakers are fluent in two or more languages and that surpasses the academic goal of the US FLL req. of intermediate level (201)

If a student did not have a FLL in HS – took one FLL course at another college (e.g. SPN 101) may do a different language (e.g. FRN 101-102 to complete FLL req.) Degree audit does not recognize this – work with the chair for a waiver.

Lower division (101,102,201,202,206) Spanish now requires a C- or above to proceed to the next level (old rule was a C)

Advising tips for students who may be unable to declare EXS before earning 45 hours & need other courses:

o Pre-PT students can consider pre-req. for PT school (i.e. STT, PSY, PHY)

o Consider these courses: EXS 216, 217 (BIO 240,241); CSC 105, EXS 340, EXS 350/PED 350, EXS 355

o They should NOT take EXS 349 or EXS 359 (have pre-reqs)o Consider a new major (REC and Public Health are options in HAHS)o Last resort – speak with Wayland Tseh

5/2016 Advising Tips: PBH 290 – Is now available to NON PBH majors: This allows students to

take one course in the program before declaring. Take PBH 290 and 295 first (Foundations of PH and Public Health Practice)

All students in the program must complete all core courses and at least one concentration.

Three possible concentrations: Community Health Education, Global Health, and Pre-Clinical (suggested for pre-health students).

Community Health Education Concentration requires either PBH 351 (Health Communication) or COM 226. The pre-req for COM 226 is a B or better in COM 105 – Students are encouraged to contact Dr. Cottrell or the professor to be granted an override into COM 226 without the COM 105 prerequisite. PBH 351 is not currently offered.

Contact Dr. Cottrell if there are any special requests for PBH 290 – flexible with allowing non-majors into the course.

Requirements for Admission to Public Health Studies: Completion of 24 semester hours To be admitted to the program a student must have a 2.25 overall GPA. A 2.5

GPA is required to register for internship and graduate from the program– This is reflective of other Public Health Studies programs around the nation.

University Studies: Students need to take PBH 292 instead of STT 210. Students

grandfathered in if credit comes in for STT. Students are highly recommended to complete EXS 216 (BIO 240) and

EXS 217 (BIO 241) as early as possible. If taking BIO 240/241, take BIO 201 & CHM 101 during the first 2

UNCW semesters (Suggested for Pre-Health students) Recommended US courses include STT 210, PSY 105, SOC 105 Pre-Health students should look into taking BIO 240/241 sequence vs.

EXS 216/217 because of the traditional 8 credit requirement for graduate programs.

Completed in Major:o Cluster: Modeling Recommended o Writing Intensive: PBH 359, HEA (PBH) 305o Information Literacy: PBH 320, HEA (PBH) 452o Quantitative and Logical: STT 210

Students should be aware that the major does require 60+ credit hours which typically take a full two years. It is helpful for students to have completed their US requirements by the end of their soph. year if they hope to complete their degree in four years.

Rec., Sport Leadership

B.A. Recreation, Sport Leadership, and Tourism ManagementStudents take a core curriculum that includes management, leadership, finance and budgeting, research, marketing, quality service management, and risk management. The student would then select an emphasis area of either public/non-profit recreation, (students interested in outdoors and environmental recreation) recreational sports leadership (students interested in sports and physical education) or tourism and commercial recreation, (typically students interested in business-type courses). In their chosen emphasis area, students take additional classes that are specific to their area. For example, in public/non-profit recreation students gain a broader understanding of city, county or state recreation, students in sports leadership learn about recreational sport programs, and students in commercial recreation and tourism learn about the travel and tourism and other hospitality businesses, as well as other commercial recreation enterprises.

UNCW University Studies Requirements & NC State General Education Program RequirementsSince 2+2 students will likely transfer, meeting the UNCW University Studies requirements is not necessary. NC State has similar requirements and taking equivalent courses at UNCW that will transfer to NC State to fulfill their requirements is paramount. However, it is wise to take courses that meet both the UNCW University Studies requirements and NC State’s requirements in case you decide to remain at UNCW. The following courses meet the requirements of both institutions (note, a few of these courses may not be offered in the fall):

I. B. Lifetime Wellness PED 101II. A. Aesthetic, Interpretive, & Literary Perspectives ARH 201, ENG 110, ENG 211, ENG 212, ENG 223, ENG

224, ENG 225, ENG 226, ENG 230, ENG 232, ENG 233, MUS 115, MUS 116, THR 121

II. B. Historical & Philosophical Perspectives HST 101, HST 102, HST 103, HST 105, HST 106, PAR 101, PAR 115, PAR 201, PAR 215, PAR 235, PAR 236

II. D. Human Institutions & Behaviors ANT 207, PLS 101, PLS 202, PSY 105, SOC 105, SOC 215

II. F. Living in a Global Society ANT 208, BIO 150

Other courses may transfer, so please ask Dr. Reamer about courses you are interested in taking. If you have AP credit for humanities/social science courses, please consult Dr. Reamer.

Foreign Language RequirementsIf you earned a “C” or better in two consecutive years of the same language in high school, then NC State would consider your foreign language proficiency met. Please do not register for a foreign language course in the fall semester as a 2+2 student
