Develop prototype diagnostic and intervention tools that are aligned to the common core standards, pilot these in real time, test their reliability and validity, and implement

these more broadly in traditional and new learning environments

To build a coherent system of:

• college ready standards and aligned assessments; • tools to help teachers implement those standards; and • highly engaging and student-centered delivery systems

all designed to strengthen teacher effectiveness and improve student learning

College Ready Work – Initiative Mission

APPENDIX

Page 17: Crw scale partner slides 5 18_final

17

•Develop a theory of action, identify assumptions and articulate solution designs for the “problem”. •Participants: Foundation and identified design partners•Key Research Question: What is your theory of action? How will the solution designs support the CR goals?

Strategy/Design

• Identify core design partners, test assumptions and theory of action with external groups. Begin to build “solutions.”•Participants: Core design partners•Key Research Question: Do the solutions leverage what we know works? How tightly are the solutions aligned with common core standards?

Build

•Get buy in from the field for the solution and engage potential partners in development of the solution designs. Test the clarity, functionality, usability of solutions. During this phase, the emphasis is on the user and how useful they find the solution. Prototyping.

•Participants: Small number of partners•Key Research Question: How do teachers integrate solutions into their practice? Do the solutions elicit the range/type of student responses intended?

Co-Develop

•Refine the solution and identify supports needed for wider dissemination. Pilot and co-development Partners become champions of the solution. Results from pilot phase can also push us to go back and revisit strategy/design assumptions.

•Participants: Larger group than co-development but still relatively small # of partners•Key Research Question: How were the tools implemented? What worked/didn’t work? What other partners do we need?

Pilot and Study

•Provide implementation support to focus states/districts and make the solution available to much broader population through open-access tools.

•Participants: Large group of states, districts, networks •Key Research Question: Are the instructional tools effective in diverse contexts? How do we maintain the quality of tools and their implementation? What impact are the tools having on student achievement and teacher practice?

Literacy Example: Sample Milestones from Dashboard

Strategy/Design

• Common Core Standards are the big bet.

• Assumptions for literacy: not taught, accountability not distributed, text complexity matters.

Build

• ID Literacy by Design as Core partner

• Develop prototype tasks, modules and syllabus

• Tools grades 6-8 in SS and ELA

Co-Develop

• ID state and district partners to work with us on co-development of tasks, modules: 3 states, 10 districts; 3 networks

• ID research partners

Pilot & Study

• Expanded set of partners use modules and course for student instruction: 5 states and 20 districts; 6 networks

• Perform task validation and collect data on how students respond to a task

Implementation & Dissemination

• Implementation support in 10 states and 30 districts; 10 networks

• Modules and courses with content

• Observable indicators of changes in teacher practices and more rigorous student work
