the new Francis Crick institute - Creating a Critical mass for next Generation Biomedical research

Jim Smith is Director of the MRC’s National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), a post he took up in 2009. He was previously Professor of Developmental Biology and Director of the Gurdon Institute at the University of Cambridge, and before that had worked at NIMR from 1984 to 2000. He is also Director of Research at the Francis Crick Institute. Jim was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1993, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998, and a member of the Academia Europaea in 2000. He was awarded the EMBO medal in 1994, the Feldberg Foundation Award in 2000, and the Waddington Medal in 2013. His current research interest is the molecular basis of mesoderm formation.

Martino is the first CEO of the Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst, a unique venture providing small biotech and life sciences companies and start-ups with access to the expertise, networks and scientific facilities traditionally associated with multinational pharmaceutical companies, via Incubator, Accelerator and full Science Park facilities. 09.35 – 10.05 professor donald H. levy Vice-president for research and national laboratories, university of Chicago thinking about High-performance, multidisciplinary labs - the View from the Bench

Donald H. Levy, PhD is Albert A. Michelson Distinguished Service Professor in chemistry and Vice President for research and for national Laboratories at the University of chicago, ceo of Uchicago Argonne, LLc, Vice-chairman of the Board of Governors for Argonne, and a Member of the Board of Directors for fermilab. named to the University position in 2007, Levy’s responsibilities include oversight of the management contracts for both Argonne national Laboratory and fermi national Accelerator Laboratory, the office of Tech nology and Intellectual Property, the office of University research Administration, the research computing center, Arete (Uchicago’s research accelerator), University-Argonne research centers and all issues related to Human Subjects research. The annual research budget for Argonne and fermilab combined is $900 million and that of the University is over $400 million. Levy joined the University of chicago faculty in 1967. A physical chemist, Levy was a leader in developing and using supersonic jet cooling to study the structure of molecules. His awards include the e. Bright Wilson Award in Spectroscopy and the ellis Lippincott Award from the optical Society of America, and the Plyler Prize of the American Physical Society. He received his BA from Harvard University, and his PhD from Uc Berkeley.

10.05 – 10.35 professor Stephen Holloway pro Vice-Chancellor, research, university of liverpool the university of liverpool’s laboratory Strategy and the Central teaching laboratory (Ctl)

Stephen Holloway graduated from the University of Leicester with a PhD in Theoretical Solid State Physics in 1976 and then spent 6 years in continental europe working in universities in Berlin, copenhagen and Gothenburg. He joined the University of Liverpool in 1984 and has since been Head of the chemistry Department, Dean of Science and engineering and Pro Vice-chancellor (since 2009). As Dean of Science and engineering he was responsible for approximately 300 academic staff, and a similar number of academic staff, in 4 Schools, with an annual research income in excess of £50 million pa. He was also responsible for designing and implementing a University-wide reorganisation within his faculty. He has latterly been very active in developing overseas links with other universities based upon research synergies. During Stephen’s research career he has investigated a wide range of gas-surface processes from passive spectroscopic studies to heterogeneous reactions on catalysts, and has published approximately 150 papers.

10.05 – 10.35 professor paul nolan professor of physics and Ctl academic lead, university of liverpool the university of liverpool’s laboratory Strategy and the Central teaching laboratory (Ctl)

Paul nolan is a Professor of Physics at the University of Liverpool, UK. He served as Head of the Physics Department from 2000 – 2008 and has more recently been the academic lead for a new interdisciplinary teaching laboratory project at the University of Liverpool. He is also a leading international research scientist with expertise in nuclear structure physics and gamma ray spectroscopy. His research led to the discovery of superdeformed bands in nuclei and he carried out many experiments to measure their detailed properties. for the past 35 years he has played a leading role in a number of developments of gamma ray detection particularly with germanium detectors. These projects include TeSSA, eUroGAM, eUroBALL, eXoGAM and AGATA. recently his work has extended to include the development of spectroscopic gamma ray imaging tech niques applicable to both medical imaging and homeland security. He has over 250 papers published in international journals.

Professor Sir Ian Diamond fBA frSe AcSS is Principal and Vice-chancellor of the University of Aberdeen, an appointment he has held since 1 April 2010. He was previously chief executive of the economic and Social research council and before that Deputy Vice-chancellor at the University of Southampton, where he had been for most of his career. Sir Ian is chair of the Lloyds TSB foundation for england and Wales and a Trustee of WWf UK and the Iona cathedral Trust. He is chairman of the Universities UK research Policy network committee, chair of the Universities UK Group on efficiency, and a member of the Scottish Science Advisory council, the council of cBI Scotland and the British council Scotland Advisory committee.
