About Lawrence

WELCOME TO LARRYVILLE (LAWRENCE)!

The University of Kansas is located in Lawrence, KS. Founded in 1854 along the banks of the Kansas River, we are 45 minutes west of Kansas City and 30 minutes east of Topeka, the state capital. A town of just under 100,000, we are a quintessential college town and a great blend of big city and small town life. From farmer’s markets and the county fair, to film festivals and a vibrant music and arts scene, we have something for everyone.

The KU campus is located near the historic heart of Lawrence and Massachusetts Street or “Mass Street” where students will find diverse dining options, locally-owned coffee shops and stores. The campus is surrounded by historic neighborhoods and an active arts community.

Located on the top of Mt. Oread, the water divide between the Kansas and Wakarusa rivers, the KU Lawrence campus is home to 6,000 graduate students across 13 schools. Welcome to your new home and Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Living in Lawrence

Lawrence is a wonderful place to live with many amenities and housing options. From modern, furnished apartments to historic homes, on-campus and off-campus housing, single-family homes and cooperative housing communities, there are many different ways to make your home on The Hill.

On-Campus Housing

Graduate students are welcome to live in a number of residence halls. Visit HOUSING.KU.EDU for more information about residence halls

KU also has two on-campus apartment buildings where most grad students who live on campus reside:

Stouffer Place ApartmentsHOUSING.KU.EDU/STOUFFER

Jayhawker TowersHOUSING.KU.EDU/JAYHAWKER-TOWERS

Additionally, KU has limited transitional housing in 2-bedroom apartment homes. Connect with KU Housing directly for more details and various options.

Off-Campus Housing

Lawrence offers a number of different housing options inlcuding student-focused apartment complexes, single-family homes, and cooperative housing communities. There are many options and we encourage in-coming students to explore their options at APARTMENTS.LAWRENCE.COM

Complexes close to campus with reasonably priced one-bedroom units that students might start their exploration with include:

Apple Lane Apartments

Meadowbrook Apartments

West Hills Apartments

But! We encourage you to reach out to your graduate support staff or COGA advisor or graduate students in your department for advice or recommendations on housing options.

Tips and Resources

1. Secure your housing early as many options are filled in the spring and early summer. Many leases begin in the first week of August for off-campus housing.

2. If you’re new to the area, reach out to current graduate students in your department or your graduate support staff person for places to start looking that are close to campus or include a KU shuttle.

3. Some students buy homes in the area if they are planning on being in Lawrence for a number of years.

4. Housing costs can vary from $300-$1100 per month plus utilities depending on the type of housing and location.

5. Check out Student Legal Services Leasing Tips and Services at LEGALSERVICES.KU.EDU/LEASING-TIPS

6. Know your rights and find additional resources on off-campus housing at GOODNEIGHBOR.KU.EDU

7. Cost of Living Calculators can be really helpful when determining what your best housing option may be. A great place to start is NERDWALLET.COM/COST-OF-LIVING-CAL-CULATOR

Parking and Accessing CampusKU has a closed campus and traffic is restricted on Jayhawk Boulevard, the main street that runs across the top of the hill through main campus, from 7:45am - 5pm. Streets surrounding campus are open but please be aware that these streets can become conjested between class periods and just after 5 pm.

Parking Lots, Garages & PermitsParking lots are color-coded with yellow lots reserved for students. An annual yellow permit was $302 for 2019-2020. For a reduced fee, students can also choose the Park & Ride option where you can park on west campus in a designated lot and catch a KU bus to the main campus. Graduate students are first in line to purchase yellow permits beginning around July 1, but be aware that permits often quickly sell out.

Students who hold a valid parking permit are also eligible to purchase a pass for the parking garages that provides parking in the garages after 5 pm and on weekends - this can be helpful for students teaching evening classes or working in labs, studios, or holding campus employment that takes place during evenings and weekends. Be aware though that yellow lots are open parking after 4pm, so a garage pass is not necessary to park on campus after hours.

Please note, purchasing a parking pass is optional and only necessary if you’d like to park on campus. Many students park in the neighborhoods around campus, bike to campus if they live close enough, or take the bus. Students who live in on-campus housing also do not need a yellow permit as they have parking near their residences. Bus routes also run throughout the city that you may ride to campus (for free with your student ID!). More information about student parking and fees can be found at: PARKING.KU.EDU/STUDENT-PERMITS

Carpool ProgramParking on campus is limited and most student parking lots quickly flll up Monday through Friday. We encourage students to consider carpooling, and we offer a lower cost permit for those who choose this option. Two or more students may form a carpool. Find more info about the Carpool Program and how to apply at PARKING.KU.EDU/CARPOOL-PROGRAM

Accessing CampusMuch of the KU Lawrence campus is located on a hill with limited ADA parking. The HawkRoute on the next page is a map of a stairless path from the bottom of Mt Oread on Sunnyside Avenue to the top of main campus on Jayhawk Boulvard. We also have the Jaylift service which is operated through KU on Wheels and is available for those with permanent or temporary injuries who cannot easily access the regular accessible KU Bus Route.
