IN THE FOOTPRINTS OF OTHERS This weeks Open Technical Lecture is being given by Ed Clark (Director) and Chris Neighbour (Associate) at Arup. see diary for times and date. The Serpentine Pavillion is an invitation to leading International Architects to build a building on the lawn of the Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park. Ed Clark and Chris Neighbour are the structural engineers and the construction management for the last 6 years having taken over from Cecil Baumont. They will discuss the previous 11 built pavilions by, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Toyo Ito, Alvaro Siza, Rem Koolhaas, Oscar Niemeyer, Oliafur Elliason, Frank Gehry, SANAA, Jean Nouvel, and Peter Zumthor through to the excavation that is this years Pavillion designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei. The Itinerary:

Day 1 : 24.10.12 Day 2 : 25.10.12 Day 3 : 26.10.12

Depart at 9am from Mansion Site to Hooke Park Workshop and Forestry, Dorset for lunch and guided tour of factory for Architecture.

Next to Sladersyard Workshop for guided tour by Peter Southall, pioneering steambending furniture factory to see chairs and long boat in jig.  Later in the day depart to Isle of Portland.

Portland Stone Quarry Trust, The Drill Hall, is our home on the Isle of Portland for two nights. Tour of sculptors Hannah and Paul's workshop follwed by lesson in stone carving with afternoon of experimental carving.  Visit Tout Quarry to see work by Rachel Whiteread and Anthony Gormely visit Albion Portland Stone factory to see diamond tipped saws and 6-axis stone carving robot. After diner meet and talk to old Quarrymen, Ralph Stone to hear of songs sung while quarrying and JCB's with massive chainsaws. 

Depart Portland to Morgan Motors Factory, Malvern, Worcestershire for lunch and guided tour to see full process of construction for the +4, Aero8 and 3 wheel Morgan car.  Then back to London in time for tea.
