Engineers without Borders (EWB) UCTDuring orientation you will be introduced to EWB UCT - a student society that provides a platform for students from the EBE faculty to practically apply the skills acquired in the courses to real-world problems in underserviced communities.

This year, EWB have been involved in a number of projects doing school repairs, designing and constructing a skate park in Langa, designing a greenhouse, wind turbines, high efficiency stoves and they also ran a human-centred design course that introduced a new aspect of problem solving.

CAMPUS LIFE

2016 EBE Undergraduate Student CouncilThe EBE undergraduate student council is an annually elected student body whose responsibility is to represent and communicate the interests of the near 4000 EBE undergraduate students at the University of Cape Town.

EXCITING EBE PROJECTS

Electrical engineering academic, Dr Amir Patel, after studying the

movement of the cheetah’s tail, is a step closer to creating the ultimate search-and-

rescue robot that can find and pull survivors and bodies from the scene of a mass disaster,

without falling over.

EXCITING EBE PROJECTS

Charlotte Slingsby, a recent mechanical engineering graduate,

designed Moya (meaning wind in Xhosa) - a new energy generation system, using sheets

of plastic with wave-like filaments attached, capturing tiny amounts of wind energy that can

then be stored in a battery. Charlotte is an innovation design engineer, who after graduating from UCT, went on

to graduate with a combined Master’s degree from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London.

EXCITING EBE PROJECTS

Nina Dube recently won the Women’s Property Network Young Achiever Award

(under 35 yrs). She was recognised for the significant role that she plays within Barclays

Africa (ABSA), and who in a short space of time has moved through the ranks to fulfil an often difficult

and challenging position. Nina was one of the first graduates for the property studies degree, in 2001.

EXCITING EBE PROJECTS

A team from the industrial computational fluid dynamics research

group in the department of mechanical engineering have successfully broken the

longstanding Class A water rocket world altitude record by a massive 33%. It is the first world record

in rocketry set by a South African university group, and definitely the first appearance South Africa has made on

the international water rocket scene.

EXCITING EBE PROJECTS

A UCT architecture team received first prize for the 2015 Murray & Roberts Des

Baker architectural design competition. Teams were asked to imagine an ‘African city

of the future’, for the African continent using film as their medium of choice.

The team’s entry was titled Day Dream, by Donna Huang, Kyle Mackintosh, Matthew Fourie, Hannah Cook,

Blue Benington and Alexandra Wunderlich, and looked at an emerging Cape Town of the future as new communities develop in

accordance with their resources. The focus was ensuring that as the city grows, large urban areas are sensitive to human scale and allow for

functions: industry, civic and residents, all within close proximity.
