Chair’s Message Chicano/LatinoStudies achieved amajormilestonein June. No longer a Program, we were recognized withDepartmentalstatusintheSchoolofSocialSciences.Forourreaders outsidethe a c ademy,this may simplyseem to reflect achange in namealone, but thesignificance ismuch greater.Atafundamentallevel, thechangedemonstratesourmany successesover the pas tseveralyears.Weroutinely offer arich palette ofclasses on theChicano/Latinoexperience. Lastyear, more than2 , 0 0 0 U C Iundergraduates took Chicano/Latino Studies classes. TheseCLSstudentsincludedmorethan50Chicano/LatinoStudiesmajors.TheDepartmentishometotenfacultymemberswithpartialorfullappointmentsinChicano/LatinoStudiesandnineaffiliateswithresearchinterestsspanningfourschoolsoncampus(Colleges of Medicine, Social Sciences, Humanities, SocialEcology).Withoutanexcellentfacultyandarigorouscurriculum,we would not have been awarded Departmental status. As a Department, Chicano/Latino Studies will fitmorecentrallyintheacademicstructureofthecampus. Asimportantly,itwillallowustohirefacultywithappointmentsnot shared with other departments. Although we havecertainlybenefitedfromcollaborativehiringwithotherunits,we now have the freedom to seek faculty who do not alsohavetoservetheteachingandadministrativeneedsofotherunits. Finally, as a Department, we can now move towarddesigning graduate degree programs. In other words, theexciting times at Chicano/Latino Studies have only begun! We will not be resting on our laurels in 2006-07

(thoughwewillbecelebratingourmovetodepartmentalization–staytunedfordetails).WewillinauguratethenewChicano/LatinoStudiesGraduateEmphasis.TheGraduateEmphasisis a four course sequence of graduate seminars available tograduate studentsenrolled inanyPh.D.programacross theUCIcampus.Bytakingthesecourses–whichfocusonresearchmethods,researchdesign,andanalysisoftheChicano/Latinoexperience,UCIgraduatestudentswilldeveloptheskillsneededforresearchandteachingontheChicano/Latinoexperience.GraduatestudentscompletingtheEmphasiswillapplytheseskills in their dissertation research; they will include a CLSfacultymemberasamemberoftheirdissertationcommittees.CompletingtherequirementsoftheGraduateEmphasis(Continued on page 2)

Chair’s Message V I C K I R U I Z , Professor inDepartmentofChicano/LatinoStudiesandChair of the DepartmentofHistory,hasbeenelecteda Fellow of the Society ofAmericanHistorians,a rarehonor since membershipin the Society is limited to250 historians. Founded in1939 by Alan Nevins, theSociety seeks to recognizescholarly and literarydistinction in historicalwriting.ItawardstheannualFrancis Parkman Prize forthe best book in Americanhistory, the biennial James Fenimore Cooper Prize for thebest historical novel, the annual Allan Nevins Prize for thebest-written dissertation, and the biennial Bruce CattonPrize for Lifetime Achievement in the Writing of History.

STELLA GINEZ, Chicano/Lat ino StudiesDepartmentManagerwasawarded the “Spot l ightAward,” an award created bytheUCOfficeofthePresidenttorecognizeexceptionaleffortsby a select number of staffmembers.
