Written Assignment 2Learning English as a second language can change your lifeThere are 7 billion people in the world, and people communicate among their own nation with their own language, but it is required to use a second language communicating with another nation. In order to communicate with other people in the world most effectively, it is important to choose the right language to learn. According to Cambridge Encyclopedia, there are 450 million people use English as the primary language, and 750 million people use English as a second language. As English seem to be the most popular language, so learning English as a second language is a smart choice. Using English as a second language is important in daily life, study, and at work, and it can change your life.First of all, using English as a second language become a must in our daily life. Nearly a quarter of the world population speaks English, over 60 countries in the world using English as the official language, people can communicate with each other in English. No matter you are students or working personnel, it is impossible to avoid using English. For example, internet and social media becoming part of our life, communicating with people from another country through the net, language commonly used is English. Another example, when people travel to another country for business or leisure, English is the language which commonly used to eliminate the language barrier. You are not able to read Japanese word, but you can understand English direction which displayed at Japan Subway Station. Even though, people staying in their own country cannot avoid communicating with other people in English, because nowadays people will travel and work in other country and makes it become a multinational city. You have to use English to communicate with the foreigner around you. Able to communicate in English enable us to make friends with people from other countries, learn about their culture to adopt the best part of them into our own lifestyle, and wider our social network. This will change our life by enriching our life-style.Secondly, able to read and write in English is an advantage for you in your academic study. It is required reading a lot of books or journals when studying or doing research. Most of the well-known academic publications and research are done and written in English, people who understand English can study and learn from other peoples work to enrich owns knowledge. On the other hand, people might choose to publish their research and work in English, to let more people able to share their thoughts. Furthermore, some publication in another language had been translated into English, it makes that not only information written in English can be access and as well as information which was written in many other languages can be accessed. Another alternative is to use English as the media to learn the third and fourth languages. All above are the benefits of using English for academic study. Enriching owns knowledge is one of the important aspects to change the life.Thirdly, English proficiency is one of the key aspects of career development. Under the influence of globalization, oversea company trading with foreign countries and local company explore the market globally becoming a normal practice. English is used for communication in the global business community, able to speak and understand English will help you do the job better, and might earn a better job opportunity locally and overseas. For example, the people who work in a local trading company require having higher English proficiency to communicate with oversea customer. With better English proficiency, you can understand your customers requirement better, and you can express your ideas to your customer better. Another example, when the company sending employee travel overseas to explore the market, always will first consider employee who communicate better in English. On the other hand, companies always chooses candidate with better English to promote to a higher position. Better English proficiency is the keystone on career development. Furthermore, there are a lot of good job offer from overseas, good English proficiency earn you the entry ticket for the application. A better job means better income, and can improve your life significantly.In summary, English is the most popular language and learning English as a second language is important. It makes people able to communicate with other people who do not speak the same native language. Without the language barrier, people can wider their social network and learn about other culture. And able to read more professional informative publications printed in English to improve their own research; or publish their works in English let other people to share their thoughts. At last, it will broaden the employment opportunity for both local and oversea job.
