IMO oily water regulations MEPC60(33) and 107(49)

and their strict enforcement have created challenges

for the marine industry. This is because the range

of laboratory certifi ed Oily Water Separators (OWS)

do not always perform as tested, in an actual and

often extreme marine environment.

A fresh approach is needed. The Unitor Oily Water

Pod is just that; a new adsorption technology based

on the patented MYCELX® compound. The range

of 1.0, 2.5 and 5m3/hr polishing systems are certifi ed

by Lloyd’s Register to 5ppm on the MEPC107(49)

test emulsion. The Unitor Oily Water Pod assists

the OWS by covering its performance shortfalls.

This enables the vessel to discharge bilge within

the allowable limit of 15ppm when previously it may

have had to land it ashore at considerable cost.

Being robust and highly effi cient, the Unitor Oily

Water Pod system stands out from the crowd by

treating both free phase oil and stable emulsions

effectively. This, combined with ease of installation

and operation, means the Unitor Oily Water Pod is

where oily water problems end and peace of mind

begins.

Why would I need a Unitor Oily Water Pod

System?

The Unitor Oily Water Pod is vital if the OWS fails

to achieve 15ppm either some or all of the time.

It also serves as an insurance policy and best

practice indicator.

How does it work?

It is an adsorption technology based on the

patented MYCELX® compound, which is cured

onto polypropylene fi lter tubes called Adsorption

Elements. Upon contact with MYCELX® oil gets

sticky and elastic which permanently traps it in

the Adsorption Elements.

Where do I install the Unitor Oily Water Pod in my

system?

It should be placed after the OWS and before the

Oil Content Meter (OCM). Installation is easy

thanks to the small footprint and fl exible layout.

There is no need for electrical connections, and

a bilge pump upgrade normally isn’t required.

I have an IMO compliant 15ppm Oily Water

Separator. Why do I need more equipment?

Despite certifi cation, OWS equipment tends to

fail under real life conditions. Proof of this lies in

the high level of fi nes being levied. The Unitor

Oily Water Pod closes the gap between the

15ppm limit and the actual performance of OWS.

How much training will the crew require and how

long do the Adsorption Elements last?

Minimal training is required because the system

is self activating. Crew only have to monitor the

second stage visual status indicator and change-

over the elements typically every 6 – 9 months.

This takes approximately half an hour.

There are several polishing systems on the

market – what makes the Unitor Oily Water Pod

special?

Having the MYCELX® chemistry in the fi lter

elements and not having it is the difference

between day and night. Also, although other

products have Type Approval too, unless the

approval relates to the MEPC 107(49) standard,

as our does, it offers no indication of

performance.

How can used Adsorption Elements be disposed

of?

Used elements are non-hazardous and burn well,

so incineration is best. Alternatively they can be

landed as oily waste. Always comply with local

regulations when incinerating waste.

Why is it certifi ed to 5ppm when today’s rules call

for 15ppm?

The 5ppm capability provides the operator with a

margin of safety. It is also to facilitate companies

with self imposed limits of 5ppm in anticipation of

tougher standards.

Can the Unitor Oily Water Pod be used instead of

an OWS?

Unitor’s Oily Water Pod system is intended to

complement the primary OWS rather than

replace it.

Effective Performance

• Cost effi cient thanks to typical 6 – 9 month adsorption element lifetime

• Typical operational costs for treating 1 m3 of bilge water are between

USD5-10. Landing costs for the same amount could be upward of USD120.

• System will stay under 15ppm limit regardless of whether oil is in free phase

or in emulsion

• Advanced technology - captured oil is permanently immobilised

• Rough weather conditions have no effect on performance

Easy Installation & Operation

• The small footprint and fl exible layout makes installation very simple

• The system self activates - minimal supervision required during operation

• Only requires plumbing into bilge line. No electrical connections. Flange kits

supplied

• Low pressure drop at saturation (approx. 1bar), - bilge pump upgrade

normally unnecessary

• Visual indicator system shows when Adsorption Elements reach full

capacity

Exceeds Environmental Regulatory Standards

• Certifi ed by Lloyd’s Register to 5ppm with the IMO MEPC 107(49) test

emulsion in 1, 2.5 and 5m3/hr versions

• Captures emulsifi ed oil and free oil with same effectiveness

• Recognised by authorities as a ‘best practice’ indicator during inspections
