Fair Treatment of Seafarer Witnesses
Issue arises in midst of need to conduct thorough investigation in timely manner.
Often hampered by active efforts to obstruct investigation and intimidate witnesses.
Consistent efforts by USCG and DOJ to – Gain cooperation of owner/operator to maintain necessary witnesses so
as to minimize disruption to vessel’s schedule. Expedite investigations. Utilize available procedures to memorialize testimony and permit early
release of mariner witnesses.
USCG Commandant is personally briefed on the status of witnesses each week.
Key US Government concern in each and every case.
