FROM THE DESK OF YOUR PASTOR…
Dear Friends,
Today, I had the privilege of being seated at the table with the
wonderful Lay Delegation from The United Methodist Church
of Green Valley! Sally, Marlene, and John have ably represented
the congregation all week. I know that we are all grateful for
their leadership and the wisdom they have shared through their
presence on the floor of the Annual Conference.
Paul and I are looking forward to finally having a place to call
home after several weeks of living out of suitcases and boxes.
As you may have heard our home in Phoenix sold several months
before our move to Green Valley. As a result, we have been
temporarily camped out in the home of our good friends and
parishioners at Shepherd of the Hills. And, while we are grateful
for all of the love and kindness extended to us by our good
friends in this time of transition – it will be good to finally
unpack and know that we can stay awhile.
We want to thank you for the warm, supportive welcome you
have already given to our family. Your cards and notes
welcoming us to our new pastorate -- and the caring words of
support and prayer for our daughter have given us hope and
encouragement, especially in moments of uncertainty and grief.
Thank you for caring for us – even though some of you have yet
to meet us. Through your kindness, we have felt supported and
sustained.
We are excited to meet you face to face and look forward to the
ministry we will all do together for God, in a beautiful place
called Green Valley, through the love and grace of Jesus Christ.
We will see you soon.

In this age of HIPAA the only way the church office or staff can know if someone is in the hospital or having difficulties of any kind is through notification by you or a friend.
Please let us know if anyone in your family or the church family needs prayers and/or a visit. It is the practice of this church to prepare a prayer list, providing the names of the sick
for the purpose of Intercessory prayer.
If you do not want your name communicated please contact and inform our church office at 520-625-4712 as soon as possible. Thank you.
A NEW OPPORTUNITY
John Wesley, the founder of the
Methodist Movement said that
“As Oft as the Lord’s Supper is
Offered, we should avail ourselves
of it.” The Lord’s Supper is a
means of God’s Grace where He
offers himself to us. Each Sunday
at 8:00 a.m. at the conclusion of
that service the Lord’s Supper is
offered. Also on the first Sunday
of the month at our other services,
the Lord’s Supper is offered.
Thanks to our Stephen
Ministers a new opportunity has
arisen to receive the Lord’s
Supper. At the conclusion of both
the 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. worship
hours a Stephen Minister will be
stationed in the Library to offer
the Lord’s Supper to anyone who
would like to receive it. This will
be offered on the Sundays where
the Lord’s Supper is not offered
during our regular worship hour.

WEEKLY CLASS OF TAI CHI FOR HEALTH OFFERED AT UMC
TUESDAYS 12:00 PM IN JOHNSON HALL
Green Valley United Methodist Church is now offering a Tai Chi for Health, Arthritis and
Fall Prevention Class. Tai Chi is a gentle exercise that combines breathing, slow movement
and mental focus. Tai Chi for Health, Arthritis and Fall Prevention (TCHAFA) is a
program developed by Dr. Paul Lam, a family physician and International Tai Chi Gold
Medalist. The Arthritis Foundation USA (www.arthritis.org) says Dr. Lam’s Tai Chi for
Health program “…can improve balance, reduce stress and offer arthritis pain relief.” Our class is led by
Mike Cline, a certified instructor with the Tai Chi for Health Institute. It is open to the public, free of charge,
and meets every Tuesday from 12 noon till 1 o’clock, in Johnson Hall. Stop by and see how Tai Chi can help
you. For further information about Tai Chi for Health visit the Tai Chi for Health Institute’s web page
(TCHI.org). If you have questions about the class, please contact Mike Cline, email [email protected],
With the temperature too hot to be outside, it might
be time to clean closets and cupboards. Any items
you do not want/need anymore, bring to the Thrift
box in the narthex at the church. We will be having
work/drop off days on the second and fourth
Thursdays of each month
from 9 until noon.
If you have donations
you would like picked up
or have any questions,
call Karen Heim at
625-9408. Thanks for
your continued support.
The 2018-2019 scholarship recipients were announced at Sahuarita High School award nights on
May 14 and May 17. Four-year college students are presented with $2,700 per year, while junior
college students receive $1,000 per year. These scholarships are renewable as long as
requirements and GPA are met each year. Stephanie Hernandez and Cristian Madrigal (pictured above), from Sahuarita High School, both plan to attend the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Stephanie will major in education so she can pass along the blessings received from her teachers to
her future students. Cristian is working towards a degree in dentistry and possibly orthodontics.
Scholarship recipients for the 2018-2019 school year from Walden Grove are Alayna Grimes and
Brooklyn Madrigal. Alayna and Brooklyn both indicated they plan to attend the U of A.
Brooklyn plans to major in International Studies and Government, with a planned career path
in the non-profit sector and eventually enter into politics.
The Spiritual Growth Corner
As you may have seen or heard, VBS 2018 was a HUGE success! Many thanks to all the volunteers, as well as to
contributors and the congregation-at-large. This is one of the most important of our community outreach programs,
as well as one of our most effective children’s spiritual development activities of the church. We can only do it
together!
Children’s Sunday School is ongoing throughout the summer.
Remember that there is a ‘summer shorty’ special for adult spiritual growth right now, with our own Jerry Haas,
on the four Gospel books of the Bible. It started June 24 and will conclude July 1. If you missed the first session,
be sure to join us for the second. There may be other ‘summer shorties’ as the summer progresses, so watch your
bulletins!
The May movie, “A Man Called Peter” was postponed until June 3 and was the highest attended movie yet, with
40 people! Further movies will be announced in the bulletins and Sunday announcements, so watch for them.
The Christian Education Ministry Team met one last time with Rev. Lyon on June 21. We will not meet in July,
but will meet in August (we hope to be able to welcome our new pastor to this meeting), when the fall Christian
Education classes will be discussed. Anyone interested in leading a class, or anyone who has ideas on what they’d
like to have offered, should plan on joining us for the meeting Thursday, August 2, at 9 a.m. in the large Sunday
school room in the hall near the office.
HAPPY FOURTH!! And have a safe and healthy summer!!!

A Rainbow By Kathleen Cain
Keep a rainbow tucked within your heart,
Wear it proudly each new day.
May no problem, strife or sadness,
Chase it’s unique beauty away.
When your heart is filled with a rainbow,
Through out your life it’s joy is portrayed,
For it can quell the fiercest of storms,
It was this purpose that God had it made.
Hide a rainbow within your heart,
Altho at it’s end you’ll not find a pot of gold,
Your life will have been more greatly enriched,
Than all the wealth from worlds ages old.

Shipwrecked VBS was a great success. We all learned how Jesus
rescues us from being lonely, our worries, our struggles, when we do
wrong and when we feel powerless. VBS was full of wide eyes, smiles,
laughter, singing, skits, and just a whole lot of fun. The week came and
went way to fast.
With your help, support and love for the kids we were able to bring Je-
sus into so many kids lives this past week. Thank you so much for all of
the support you have shown for VBS. Whether it be a donation, helping
in any way that you were able, just saying “looks good girls” on the
decorations, volunteering, Crew Leader, Teen Leader, Station Leader,
Station Teen Leader and Sue creating our name tags, photo covers and making our memory books. Faith
Esperanza and Jim No-Land did an amazing job with the skits, singing and each day reviewing how Jesus res-
cues us.
It takes a village to do VBS! Our Church is truly our village, and that is what makes VBS a reality.
Blessings to each and everyone. Shirley
