The Greatest Event of the Year
The opening of our new “HOME” isa proud occasion for The United German-Hungarians of Phila. & Vicinity, the comments received about the newbuilding were far above our expectations and only through the efforts ofthe Building Committee, the Pledgeesand the members working so diligentlyon the building program did we succeed in this task.
Therefore, the entire membershipowes these men a debt of gratitude. How can it be shown? By giving themthe support needed to complete our goal.
It is hoped this celebration will become an annual event and that on the 2nd Annual Celebration ourgoal of 300 pledgees will have been realized.
A 15 member Board of Governors was elected to govern thefunctions of this club and it is every members obligation to support them, and, the new officers, which they are empowered toelect, for the continued success of the organization.
I would like to express my personal thanks to the Officers, the Ladies Section, the Soccer Teams, the various committees andmembers who have aided us in this Building Program.
Let us remain “UNITED” for in Unity there is Strength.Your President,
FRANK N. KIRSCH

A Statement from the Architect:Frank Lloyd Wright, once said: “Ar
chitecture is Man’s Sense of Himself”—because it is that for which the American people and their Great Society arereally pleading, a fairer, calmer, surersense of themselves in their environment.
The United German-Hungarians havecontributed their small share in the direction for a Great Society “TheirNew Club House”.
The major part of the proposed Building Program — The New Building — isready for its occupants. Members ofthe club, the officials, and a very activegroup of the membership have made itpossible that the New Building is nowready for them.
The basic design of the structure represents a functional, modern andconprehensivo arrangement, which indicates not only our readiness for thefuture, but also our foresight and courage to face the task of life, the changesin our way of living and the willingness to do so.
The featurce in the New Building incorporate many advantages, such asflow of traffic, main activities at one floor level, safety, maintenance, an allnecessary item for a healthy operational function. The principles of up-to.-date design in lighting, ventilation and construction techniques have beenapplied in the new construction.
It is practically impossible to conceive and realize the time and effortswhich has been provided by the members in order to advance the buildingconstruction. A group of young men and the seniors of your organizationworked together in planning, constructing, financing, co-ordination and supervision of the job. It gives me great pleasure to announce to you, that thejob has been compleLed in accordance with plans and specifications, and themost imporLant item, the deadline has been met right on the dot. The Ladiesof the club, who provided help, contributions and practically put the finaltouch to the job at the completion and finishing stage must not be overlooked.
I like to extend my congratulations to all the membeys of the UnitedGerman-Hungarians for this accomplishment, my deepest respect to ourpresident, Mr. Hirsch, and his active group of assistants. I hope that youwill share many happy hours in your New Building and I hope that yourchildren will do the same.

Stride Toward SuccessHistory tells us that the first message relayed over our -
modern-day miracle (or headache) — the telephone —
was “What Hath God Wrought”. We can today proudlysay, paraphrastically: “What Hath The United German-Hungarians Wrought”. As the legendary phoenix arosefrom its own ashes to become the most resplendent bird inCreation, so has our new abode developed (without benefit of ashes) from a ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. ,
Some years ago when a group of men decided to form t’ 3 ?
the German-Hungarian Business Men’s Association, andpurchased some ground in Neshaminy Falls (commonly dubbed at that time“Neu Banat”) with the idea of putting up a little building where they couldgather socially, no thought was given to the possibility that the communitywould expand and could possibly develop into a social and nationally knownsport center. The dissolution of the Business Men’s Organization, caused nodoubt by internal differences, and the acquisition of its property by the UnitedGerman-Hungarians, pointed out the many mistakes which had been made inthe original planning, and indicated that much revisionary work had to bedone. However, our Club had expended a great deal of money and effort increating at Second and Norris a social club second to none in this area, andno-one at that time dreamed that we would ever abandon those premises. Therefore, our “Country Home” in Neshaminy just grew up haphazardlya board here and a shingle there, a dash of paint here and a length of wirethere until we had on our hands a real monstrosity.
In the interim, economic and ethnic changes dictated that our city premises be abandoned and our efforts be centered on the development of our suburban location. A great hue and cry had been set up by a number of ouryounger members about the necessity for swimming facilities, and accordingly several of the club’s work-horses spent a great deal of time and effortdelving into the possibilities of such a venture. After much careful consideration and soul-searching the conclusion was reached, that the large amountof capital required for the construction of an adequate swimming pool and itsattendant facilities would be more sensibly put to use in creating a modernbuilding to replace the eyesore which we were now calling our “home”.
Thus it came about that once again a handful of dedicated men andwomen put their “shoulders to the wheel and their noses to the grindstone”.The result of their efforts as supremely evident at Bristol and Spruce, andonce again the German-Hungarians have proven that in unity lies strength, and that determination achieves accomplishment. Our only regret is that wemust end this little essay on a melancholy note: our “Old Maestro”, WenzelOsti, is not with us to see the fulfillment of one of his fondest dresms, a goaltoward which he strove so tirelessly over many years. Wherever his spiritmay now be, we feel certain that it is at rest because the German-Hungarianshave proven that they are UNITED.
