ANALYZE THE LEARNER

• I am teaching a fifth grade English class containing fifteen students total. There are eight girls and seven boys. Five of the girls are white, two are African-American and one is Asian. There are four white boys and three African-American. Two of the students in the class have ADHD.

MAIN OBJECTIVE

• The fifth grade language-arts class will have an understanding of the parts of speech. They will have knowledge of what each part of speech is and can name at least five examples each with 85% accuracy.

• During the assignments, students may refer to the handouts that I gave them (which are lists of words from each part of speech).

MONDAY

• Day 1: I will give a short lesson on nouns (what they are and examples) and use a voki video as a resource. I will give them a list of nouns that they can refer back to during the week’s assignments. They will be handed a worksheet that contains blocks with words in them that need colored. They will color the nouns in blue and at the bottom in the spaces provided, they will write 7 nouns that are not listed above. This is a nice visual, hands-on way for them to learn about nouns.

TUESDAY

Day 2: A short lesson on pronouns and I will give them a list of pronouns for them to refer back to. I will also show them how to use blogger.com. They will be given a worksheet, but instead of coloring, they will be sorting the words into two categories: pronouns and not pronouns. After completing the worksheet they will create a short story that includes 5-10 pronouns that they will post on a blog.

WEDNESDAY

• Day 3: I will show them a video on verbs on YouTube and then pass out a list of verbs. They will receive a worksheet where they will color in the verbs. I will show them how to create a wiki account and how to work it. They will use computers to create their own wiki account (with my help) and they will compile a list of 15 verbs.

THURSDAY

• Day 4: I will teach a short lesson on adverbs and give them a handout. I will then pass out adverb bingo cards (mixed up to where they all do not have the same one) and we will play bingo the rest of the class. The winners will receive 2 extra points to be added onto a previous assignment with a low grade.

FRIDAY

• Day 5: I will give a short lesson on adjectives and give them a list of words that are adjectives. I will show them what a voki is and how to work it. They will create their own voki avatar (with my help) and gather every worksheet they did through the week and write a paragraph containing those parts of speech (they can also refer to the lists they were given each day). The paragraph must contain at least 5 parts of speech each.
