• When volcanoes erupt, they can release three types of materials:

Pyroclasts LavaVolcanic gases

Pyroclasts

• These are solid materials like:

•Lapilli. These form in the same way as volcanic bombs but are smaller in size.

• Volcanic bombs. Large blocks of molten material that solidify before they reach the ground.

• Volcanic ash. Very fine particles that a volcano expels high into the air. Volcanic bombs

Lava

• Lava is liquid.

• It forms when magma reaches the Earth’s surface.

• Lava runs downhill in flows until it solidifies, creating volcanic rock.

Volcanic gases

• These are volcanic materials in gas form.• When magma reaches the surface, it releases all of the gases it contains. The gases are blasted through the crater.

• The main gases released by volcanoes are water vapour, carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide. A volcano expelling ash and gases.
