Physical Property

A physical property of matter can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the matter.

For example, you don’t have to change what an orange is made of to see that it is ORANGE or to hold it in your hand.

You don’t have to change what an apple is made of to see that it is RED.

Examples of Physical PropertiesThermal Conductivity – the ability to transfer to thermal energy from one

area to another

State of Matter – the physical form in which a substance exists, such as a solid, liquid, or gas

Malleability – the ability to be pounded into thin sheets

Ductility – the ability to be drawn or pulled into a wire

Solubility – the ability to dissolve in another substance

Density – mass per unit of volume

Chemical Property

• Describes a substance based on its ability to change into a new substance with different properties.

• For example, a piece of wood can be burned to create new substances (ash and smoke) with properties different from the original piece of wood.

• Wood has the chemical property of flammability – the ability to burn

Chemical Change vs Physical Change• A chemical change makes a substance that

wasn't there before. There may be clues that a chemical reaction took place, such as light, heat, color change, gas production, odor, or sound.

• The starting and ending materials of a physical change are the same, even though they may look different.

Law of Conservation of Mass• States that mass is neither created nor

destroyed in any ordinary chemical reaction.

• Example: Take the example of burning a piece of paper. It seems that the mass shrinks as the paper burns.

Physical Change• A physical change is a change that affects one

or more physical properties of a substance.

• Examples: Melting of a stick of butter, freezing water for ice cubes, bending a paper clip, cutting your hair, and mixing oil and vinegar.

Chemical Change• A chemical change occurs when one or more

substances are changed into entirely new substance with different properties.

• A chemical change is the actual process in which a substance changes into another substance.

• Examples of chemical changes: sour milk, wood burning, fried egg, and Statue of Liberty rusting

Why is Being Flammable a Chemical Property?

• When something is flammable, it is a chemical property due the chemical reaction that has to take place to change one substance to another.

• Physical Properties identify the type of matter through observation and measurement.
