(b) The particles in a solid are held in place by a lattice framework. These bonds do not allow the particles in the solid to move about but rather only to vibrate in their place. Thus, the solid maintains its shape. The particles in a gas or liquid are not held together by a lattice framework and so are free to flow past each other so that the shape of the liquid can match that of the container in which it is placed. (c) As you heat up the particles in a substance, the particles start to move faster and farther apart from each other. As the state of the substance begins to change from solid to liquid, the bonds that hold the particles in their lattice framework are no longer strong enough to hold the particles in place so they break apart. This allows the particles to start flowing past each other and become a liquid. As the state of the substance begins to change from liquid to gas, the surface particles move very quickly and break free from the surface of the liquid to enter the air and become a gas. 7. (a) A thermal insulator does not allow thermal energy to transfer through it easily, that is, it prevents the transfer of thermal energy. A thermal conductor easily allows thermal energy to travel through it.

(b) Styrofoam is a good thermal insulator. It is used, for example, for serving hot fluids and insulating new homes. Metals are good thermal conductors. If you leave a metal spoon in hot liquid, for example, the handle becomes hot. (c) A well-constructed window should be made primarily from thermal insulators. Windows are designed to let light into a building. However, during the winter, the window should keep the heated air inside the building, and during the summer, the window should keep the outside hot air outside the building. This is best achieved by using thermal insulators. (d) Answers may vary. Some possible answers are as follows: (i) baking pan, oven rack (ii) oven mitt, pot holder, building insulation (iii) frying pan, hair dryer, curling iron 8. (a) Answers may vary.
