Our Response to God’s Gifts

ReviewJesus lived among us to teach us about God’s love. He showed us how to live as God wants us to live so that we can be with him forever in God’s kingdom.

PrayerJesus, Son of God, give me the strength to follow your example in sharing God’s love with others.

Faith SummaryJesus taught us by word and by example. He gave us his commandment of love, telling us to love one another as he loves us. During his lifetime, Jesus showed perfect love to everyone. He healed people who were sick and cared for those who were poor. In all his words and actions, Jesus revealed God’s love for us.

Jesus gave us the Beatitudes, which are a set of directions for living a life that is pleasing to God. By following the Beatitudes faithfully, we will help build up the Kingdom of God.

Jesus knew that being one of his followers would not always be easy. After his Death, Resurrection, and Ascension, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to his followers to help them continue his ministry. Today, the Holy Spirit gives us strength to follow Jesus.

The corporal and spiritual works of mercy are specific ways to help others. They show us how we can serve God by caring for people’s needs.

My ResponseBeing meek means being kind and gentle. How can practicing this beatitude help you at home and at school?

Our Response to God’s Gifts

ReviewJesus calls us to be faithful members of his Church. As part of this community, we are brothers and sisters in Christ.

PrayerLoving Jesus, help me be a good disciple by serving people in need.

Faith SummaryAs Catholics, we belong to Jesus’ community—the Church. We become full members of the Church through the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist.

Jesus calls the Church to continue his mission. As the successors of the Apostles, the pope and the bishops are the spiritual leaders of the Church. Faithful Catholics follow the precepts of the Church.

Jesus calls us to ask for forgiveness when we sin so that we can live as friends with him and others. We celebrate God’s love and forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Jesus’ parable of the forgiving father shows God’s willingness to forgive us when we sin.

Mary, the Mother of God, became the first and greatest disciple of Jesus. Mary is the Mother of the Church as well as the Mother of God. She continues her discipleship in heaven, where she prays for us.

My ResponseWhat can you do this week at school to show that you are Jesus’ disciple?

Write About ForgivenessWork in small groups. Together choose one of the following situations. Write a short story or play that shows the importance of forgiveness. Read your story or play to the whole group or put on a skit.

Situation 1: Joe asks to borrow your new bicycle. When he returns it, the bike has a flat tire.

Situation 2: You enter the school cafeteria and see that your friend has saved you a seat. A group of popular kids sits at the next table. You don’t know them well, but they ask you to join them. You sit with them, ignoring your friend.

Situation 3: Your mom has been working extra hours so that you can go to camp. Your job during the week is to set the table. One day you decide to keep playing with your friends in the park. When you get home, your mother has already done your job.

Situation 4: Write your own situation.

Our Response to God’s Gifts

ReviewJesus and the Church are one. We meet Jesus in the sacraments of the Church. The sacraments give us the grace to live as Jesus’ disciples in the world.

PrayerJesus, help me always remember that you are with me, leading me to grow in relationship with God and others.

Faith SummaryAs Christians, we continue the mission of Jesus through his Church. When we sin, we damage our relationship with God. He calls us back to him and offers us the grace to be sorry. Our relationship with God is restored in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. God forgives us out of love. In the same way, he calls on us to forgive others.

Jesus nourishes us in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Sharing food is a way of showing compassion for others. As Catholics, we are called to celebrate the Sacrament of the Eucharist at Mass every Sunday and holy day of obligation.

Those who are ill or dying celebrate the healing presence of Jesus in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Members of the Church strengthen their communities when they show special concern for those who are ill or old.

In the Sacrament of Matrimony, a man and a woman receive the grace to love each other as Christ loves his Church. In the Sacrament of Holy Orders, men are ordained as bishops, priests, and deacons. Bishops and priests help us live out our baptismal call through their teaching, their leading the community in worship, and their care as pastors. Deacons assist priests and bishops in their ministry, preach the Gospel, and serve the needs of the community. As members of Jesus’ community, the Church, we are called to love and serve others just as Jesus loved and served.

My ResponseYou might not know it, but many people who are homeless are children. There are many ways you can help these children, from organizing food and clothing drives to participating in a bike-a-thon to raise money for a shelter. On a separate sheet of paper, write about what you can do.

Our Response to God’s Gifts

ReviewEvery day we make choices that affect our relationships with God and with others. We can make good choices by following the Ten Commandments.

PrayerJesus, help me make good choices by guiding me to follow the Ten Commandments.

Faith SummaryWhen God gave the Hebrews the Ten Commandments, they entered into a covenant with him. They agreed to live by the Ten Commandments, and God renewed his promise to be faithful to them and to give them a home. Jesus’ command to love God and one another fulfills the Ten Commandments. The same covenant applies to us as members of God’s family. Living in relationship with God means accepting his rules for how to live.

Jesus told us to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. The first three commandments are about love of God. We make God our first priority and love him above all else.

Jesus told us to love our neighbor as ourselves. The Fourth and Sixth Commandments tell us to honor our family relationships. We are called to respect and obey our parents, and our parents are called to care for us and to be faithful to their wedding promises. The Fifth Commandment forbids us to kill. Jesus told us to love our enemies.

The Seventh Commandment tells us to respect the rights and possessions of others. The Eighth Commandment tells us to be truthful in what we say, what we do, and how we live. The Ninth and Tenth Commandments tell us not to envy others or to covet, or want for ourselves, what other people have.

My ResponseChoose one commandment that you will follow in a special way over the next week. On a separate sheet of paper, write the commandment in your own words. Then write what you will do to follow it. Keep this sheet of paper in a special place. Review it throughout the week.

Our Response to God’s Gifts

Living God’s CommandmentsImagine that the person described below is in your class. He is a friend of yours and wants to talk to you about yesterday’s game. He is upset and complains about his teammates and how the referee made so many unfair calls against him. Read the description and write your answers to the questions on the lines below.

Jim is a good basketball player, but he also has a bad temper. He has been penalized for using bad language on the court and taking the Lord’s name in vain. You’ve heard him tell stories that aren’t true about teammates who make him angry. He claims he is more dedicated than they are.

How does Jim’s behavior affect his relationship with his teammates?

Write three ways that Jim could be on better terms with his teammates.
