The Times described the"original recipe" as mixing twomeasures of gin with one of cherrybrandy and one each of orange, pineapple, and lime juice[4] Analternative "original recipe"used gin, CherryHeering, Bénédictine, andfresh pineapple juice, primarilyfrom Sarawak (or "smoothcayenne") pineapples, whichenhances the flavor and creates afoamy top. CountCamillo Negroni concocted it byasking the bartender, FoscoScarselli, to strengthen hisfavorite cocktail, the Americano,by adding gin rather than thenormal soda water.
