Teeth should be regularly cleaned and checked by a dentist. A daily bath or

shower is important. Always wear well polished shoes. Keep fingernails short

and well manicured. Hair should always be well styled. Make-up should always

be worn in the salon. Do not wear hanging chains or large rings.

Deodorant should be used every day. Salon wear should be well pressed and clean. Shoes should be fitting. Male’s staff should be shaved or their facial

hair regularly trimmed. Feet need regular attention.

feel safe and confident. There would be lots of

accidents, and not many people would like to come to the

salon anymore.

When the fire alarm is sounded you should leave the salon immediately. You must leave the salon in a quiet manner. Never return to the building before the all clear has been given. You must meet at the assembly point by the field after

you have left the building. Never stop to collect your bags or coats when the

alarm has been sounded. Clients should be helped from the salon when the

alarm has been sounded.

Aerosol; Hairsprays –Cover the eyes of the client don’t spray

next to naked flames and don’t spray to close to the head.

Styling Aids e.g. Gels, Waxes, Serums-Don’t over loads the head.

Equipment:Brushes and Combs –Clean and sterilize, use the right

comb/brush for what you are doing.

Hairdryers – Check heat, plug in and test, don’t

hold to close to the head, check with client if its alright.

Rollers and Pins – Don’t Pierce the scalp, make sure the

tension isn't to tight.Straighteners –Check before use, put on the correct

setting, keep away from the ears and the scalp to avoid burning.

Materials:Rubber gloves -Make sure they fit correctly and there are

no holes in them, also that they are clean.

Aprons – Fasten then properly, make sure there are

no holes in them and they also need to be clean.

Gowns –They need to be clean, dry and well

maintained.

Shoulder capes –They need to be dry, clean and fastened

correctly.

UV Cabinet – This Sterilises the tools and equipment using

ultraviolet rays.Autoclave – For this you put your tools and equipment in

it and the steam it produces sterilises it.Barbicide – This is a disinfectant solution.Boiling – You put gowns and towels in this.Sterilising Wipes and Sprays – With these you would clean clippers.

In the reception area-If a trolley is in the way you should move it because someone could

trip over it. If you notice a wet patch on the floor you should stop what you are doing immediately and mop it up, it could be very dangerous if someone slipped on it. If the reception desk is cluttered you must tidy it up, it looks unprofessional for clients coming in. you could also loose important appointments as well. Wires across the floor are a hazard because people can trip over it.

Salon-Appliances left on the floor can be dangerous for people that don’t

see them as they could trip and hurt there selves, you should move it. Be sensible, don’t run, shout or swear. If there is water or hair cuttings on the floor dry and sweep it up. You should smell nice in the salon, always wear deodorant.

Dispensary-For fires make sure there is a fire extinguisher. For spills wipe them

up immediately. If there is a leak call a plumber to get it fixed as soon as possible and warn other staff that there is a leak. If there is a chemical spilt it should be cleaned up as soon as possible.

Kitchen-No smoking. Make sure the kettle is pushed to the back of the

bench. Make sure that the cutlery is put away. If there is a water

Spillages:Before you clean it put an apron and gloves on, dry the area, put

up a slippery floor sign, PEE – personal protect equipment.

Slippery Surfaces:PEE, put up a slippery floor sign after you have dried the area,

also wear gloves and an apron.

Obstruction of access or egress:You should move it as soon as possible, but if it is heavy and

you are unable to move it you should ask for help.

If I had any concerns about health and safety n the salon I would ask either my college tutor or the salon manager.

If a client or stylist cut themselves during treatment you should apply pressure on the wound, or let the client if they can. Then ring the first aid rep

regulations 1992.

Has taken the place of older laws. All at work must keep a safe and healthy workplace. You must work

in a safe responsible manner, insuring you keep yourself and others safe in the salon.

The personal protective equipment at work regulations 1992.

Employers must provide suitable and enough protective clothing and equipment, they must

provide it free of charge and they must provide training in its use.

regulations 1992.Employers must select equipment that is properly

made, suitable for the purpose and kept in good repair.

The control of substances hazardous to health regulations 1992 (COSHH)

This concerns the safe use, storage and disposal of all chemicals used in the hairdressing salon.

The electricity at work regulations 1989.Under this law the employer must supply and ensure

all electrical equipment used in the salon is kept in a safe condition. It is the employees responsibility

to report any problems or defects.
