Installing the Autodesk 3ds Max 9 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

You must be logged into the system as an administrator to install the Autodesk 3ds Max 9 Service Pack 1.

You may need the original 3ds Max 9 installer (found on the product DVD or CD, or deployment image on your network) when you apply this update. If you don't have access to the original Product DVD or CD, you can download the full trial version of 3ds Max 9 from the following site: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=5972446

You can only install the 3ds Max 9 Service Pack on the English version of 3ds Max 9. You cannot install it over an earlier version. (For example, 3ds Max 8 or 3ds Max 7.5).

Install the 3ds Max 9 Service Pack on all network rendering servers running 3ds Max 9.

For instructions for Network Deployment of the 3ds Max 9 Service Pack, see \* MERGEFORMAT How to Deploy SP1 to Multiple Machines on a Network.

Report defects with this service pack to Autodesk Media and Entertainment at: http://www.autodesk.com/3dsmax-support" http://www.autodesk.com/3dsmax-support > Other resources > Defect Report Submission Form. Refer to http://www.autodesk.com/3dsmax-support" http://www.autodesk.com/3dsmax-support for more information about available technical support resources.

Note that the 32-bit and 64-bit installer file names are different:3dsMax9_SP1_32bit.msp for 32 bit.3dsMax9_SP1_64bit.msp for 64 bit.

If you have hotfixes for 3ds Max 9 installed, manually uninstall them before installing 3ds Max 9 SP 1.

Uninstalling 3ds Max 9 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

On Windows XP SP2, uninstall the service pack using the Add/Remove Programs panel:

Open the Add/Remove Programs panel (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs).Make sure the "Show Updates" checkbox, located in the upper right corner of the panel, is checked.Select the "service pack 1" item located under the "Autodesk 3ds Max 9" item.Click Remove.

On all other operating systems, uninstall the service pack from the command line:Open a DOS command prompt (Start > Run, then type 'cmd.exe' in the edit field and hit Ok ).Execute the following command line (assuming the 3dsMax9.msi and 3dsMax9_SP1_32/64bit.msp files are located in c:\temp):

msiexec.exe /i c:\temp\3dsMax9_win32.msi /uninstall c:\temp\3dsMax9_SP1_32bit.msp /passive for 32 bit

msiexec.exe /i c:\temp\3dsMax9_win64.msi /uninstall c:\temp\3dsMax9_SP1_64bit.msp /passive for 64 bit

NOTE: In some cases, the service pack installer requires the original Autodesk 3ds Max 9 media in order to successfully complete the uninstall.

How to Deploy SP1 to Multiple Machines on a Network

You can use the techniques in the Network Administrators Guide (adsk_3dsmax_nag.pdf in the Manuals folder on your original 3ds Max 9 product DVD or CD) to update a large number of workstations to 3ds Max 9 SP1. The main difference is that instead of using the clients .MSI file, you use the .MSP patch file.

1)Make sure you have the following file on your hard drive (ensure you are using the correct version for your 3ds Max build): 3dsMax9_SP1_32/64bit.msp

2)Next, create a batch routine using the following syntax:

%comspec% /c msiexec /p \\myserver\3dsMax9_SP1_32bit.msp /passivefor 32 bit

%comspec% /c msiexec /p \\myserver\3dsMax9_SP1_64bit.msp /passivefor 64 bit

NOTE: The /qx switch specifies what level of UI is displayed. /passive specifies no UI whatsoever, and suppresses all prompts. (This makes it useful for silent installations.) When you attempt to debug your script, switch this to /qb so it will display basic modal dialogs.

3) IMPORTANT: Make sure that all Autodesk Backburner and 3ds Max processes and services are stopped on each workstation before running the batch routine. If Backburner or 3ds Max processes are running, an error occurs which prevents installation of the service pack. If you are running the patch with the /qn switch, you will not see the error dialog indicating that the update has failed.

Issues Addressed by this Service Pack

ANIMATION

Keyframes from Custom Attributes displayed in the Timeline now update correctly.Wiring animation layer weights together work correctly.

AUTODESK BACKBURNER

Assign to Selected Job option now works correctly.A limitation where slaves could only select jobs from submitting machines with identical operating systems has been removed. Now, any workstation can submit jobs that can be picked by any slave, regardless of the operating system (32-bit or 64-bit Windows). IMPORTANT: Mixing slaves that have different operating systems in the same job is NOT recommended and can lead to unexpected results.

Here are the details regarding this fix:

Setting the Platform (32-bit or 64-bit) of Your Network Render

You can now set the platform for the network rendering of your scene in the Advanced Settings of the Network Job Assignment dialog or using MaxScript from the command line.

Use these options to render your scene on a platform (either 32- or 64-bit) from the platform being used to create your scene. This is useful in situations where you are working on a platform that differs from the render farms platform. To achieve consistent results, submit jobs that are created and rendered on the same platform (32-bit or 64-bit).

NOTE: These advanced options are provided to accommodate specific render farm configurations. By default these options are set to the most compatible platform to avoid rendering to platforms where data loss may result.

Network Job Assignment Dialog

Submit Job As radio button Lets you select a rendering platform.

See the Network Job Assignment Dialog topic in the Online Help for further information.

Command Line

You can also achieve the same functionality from the command line with the following script:

3dsmaxcmd platform:

See the Command-Line Rendering Switches topic in the Online Help for further information.

MaxScript

If you want switch platforms using MaxScipt, use the following new optional parameter added to the Connect function of the NetManager class:

.ConnectconnectModeid[port:][platform:]

Where [platform] can be one of {#32 | #64 | #default }. All jobs created and submitted from this NetManager will match the specified platform. If a platform is not specified, the default platform is used.

See the NetRender Interface topic in the MaxScript Online Help for further information.

BATCH RENDER

Fixed a problem with stitch rendering. Strips are now saved correctly.

BIPED/CS

FBX imports onto bipeds now working correctly. You can now load.BIP files onto X-Refed Bipeds.Fixed stability problems with keyframe selections in the Dopesheet.Fixed a problem where crowd simulations were being solved in the wrong plane.Fixed a problem with Euler controllers that sometimes led to interpolation issues.Added a new .INI switch to allow Bipeds to display trajectories. This was previously a feature, but disabled when it appeared that using 3ds Max trajectories display on biped limbs (not biped trajectories) led to stability problems. As users are requesting this functionality, the 3ds Max trajectories display have been re-activated. To use 3ds Max trajectories display, add the following entry to your 3dsmax.ini file (edit .ini files at your own risk):

[Trajectory]ShowBiped=1

CONTROLLERS

Fixed an animation layering problem where wiring the output of a layer did not update the dependant.

DISPLAY

Hidden Line display mode issues fixed.Fixed issues involving display artifacts on objects that had animated topology changes.Fixed a problem that prevented the display of hidden sub-objects when viewed in Wireframe mode.Addressed issues where normals at the base of face extrusions would change.

EDITABLE POLY

Topology changes no longer occur when ePoly object files are saved and re-opened.Fixed problems preventing some legacy files from loading in 3ds Max 9.

EDITABLE MESH

Fixed a problem that caused normals to point in the wrong direction.

FILE I/O

Fixed a problem with the file path of files imported through FileLink. Previously they did not update correctly if the file had been moved. Fixed a problem that automatically gave materials imported from DWG files a shininess value of 100.

HAIR

Fixed a problem created when rendering hair with identical Root Thickness and Tip Thickness values.Fixed a problem occurring when rendering reflections in scenes where the Hair render effect had been deleted.Fixed a problem where changing the Tip Thickness value continuously between renderings could lead to loss of reflection or instability.Fixed a stability issues affecting styling on spline objects with only one spline sub-object.Fixed a problem preventing the complete render of long hair with many segments.Fixed a problem preventing Spherical collisions from working.Fixed a low ceiling memory limit in the tile renderer.

LIGHTS

Fixed a UI component mismatch in the IES Sky light.

LOAD/SAVE ANIMATION

Fixed a problem that decreased the stability of load/save animation.Fixed a problem preventing list controllers from appearing on the incoming list.

MAPS

Fixed problems with Fractal mode in the cellular texture so that it now functions correctly.

MATERIALS

Fixed a problem in the Arch & Design material causing incorrect shadows. This was affecting cutouts.Fixed a problem in the DirectX material preventing it from using any mapping channel greater than 1.

MAX SCRIPT

Improved MAXScript encryption so it now uses a much more robust encryption scheme.

MENTAL RAY

Fixed compatibility issues between the fast rasterizer and the mr sun and sky shader.Fixed compatibility issues between the new FG interpolation mode and the Fast SSS shader.Fixed a performance issue involving IES light profile access.

MOTION MIXER

Fixed a problem that incorrectly mapped Custom Attributes when performing a default mapping.Fixed a problem where Hold/Fetch operations could break Max Objects in a mix.

REACTOR

Fixed a problem that prevented vertices from appearing up in FFDs used by softbodies.

RENDERING

Fixed an output problem where logarithmic exposure created negative values for color components greater than ~0.95.Fixed a problem leading to decreased stability when rendering displacement maps.

RENDER TO TEXTURE

Fixed a problem that created inaccuracy errors in the 64-bit build of 3ds Max 9.

SDKFixed IKControl issues that prevented forward kinematic transforms from solving correctly.Fixed a problem leading to MAXScript exceptions in the Render To Texture and Named Selection Sets dialogs.Fixed a performance issue with selecting animated controls in the layer control system.Fixed a memory leak in the viewport code.Fixed a scene notification explosion problem that could lead to freezes when performing a Save Selected operation.

UV UNWRAP

Addressed a few small issues with packing UVs.
